Get the Radar Guns Warmed Up for Tonight!
Who will hit the higher number the most times? Won’t it be nice to have a pitcher who can top 95 MPH regularly?

Is it too much to ask for Cincinnati’s broadcast to put up some radar gun readings?
by Charlie on Sep 3, 2008 7:19 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Looks like mostly 94-95. Pounding the strike zone. Occasional breaking balls.
by Charlie on Sep 3, 2008 7:21 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Volquez just looks really good. It’s almost unfair that Ohlendorf has to face him. Ohlendorf can only pale in comparison.

Pirates hitters need to quit waving at that slider (?) away.

I don’t know, but Volquez just looks awesome.

gun's
reading 89-90 on those last 2
by northsidenotch on Sep 3, 2008 7:33 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, he was up at 94 at the beginning of the inning, though. I want a closer look—it may just be a different kind of fastball. Some of them appear to have more sinking action than others.

wow
LaRoche looked really really bad there

Some of these Pirate hitters are chasing badly.

what are the odds
that Bixler is the one to get the first hit?
by northsidenotch on Sep 3, 2008 7:38 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Brian Bixler!
that’s the furthest I’ve ever seen him hit a ball
by northsidenotch on Sep 3, 2008 7:40 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Is that
a cut fastball he’s throwing? Or is that his slider?
by northsidenotch on Sep 3, 2008 7:44 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
whatever it is
it has decent movement on it

Morgan breaks up the no-hitter
probably even more unlikely
by northsidenotch on Sep 3, 2008 7:53 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
What is with Morgan lately??
That’s two hard-hit doubles in two days. He crushed it way over the center fielder’s head…
by shayborg on Sep 3, 2008 7:54 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
If memory serves, he had a couple of hard-hit extra-base hits right in a row last year, too. When it rains it pours, I guess.
by Charlie on Sep 3, 2008 7:54 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
That's how you do it!
Take a 2-0 fastball left up on the outside half and hit it hard the other way.
by shayborg on Sep 3, 2008 7:55 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
We're hiting
Volquez pretty good this inning
by northsidenotch on Sep 3, 2008 7:56 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, three hard-hit balls right in a row.
by Charlie on Sep 3, 2008 7:57 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
It seems like
in Andy’s swing that his head moves in a huge downward motion. He just looks like he has horrible mechanics.
by northsidenotch on Sep 3, 2008 8:03 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Wow, Volquez has actually gotten away with a couple of balls right down the pike this inning.
by Charlie on Sep 3, 2008 8:04 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Not the worst at bat by Luigi, despite the result.
by Charlie on Sep 3, 2008 8:07 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
This isn’t going well. Ohlendorf’s command seems to be deserting him.

Just call Doumit "Clank"
Maybe he was crossed up, but he has to catch that pitch.
Interesting that the Reds’ announcers are talking about Heisman Trophy winner Vic Janowicz from the 50s. He was signed by the Pirates and brought straight to the big leagues because he was a protege of owner John Galbreath of Columbus, a huge Ohio State supporter.
Janowicz lasted a year or so on those outstanding (!!!) Pirate teams of the early-mid 50s.

How is
Chris Dickerson playing this good? I saw him here in Louisville, and he was nothing special, and he’s tearing it up right now

Uh oh. I hope Freddy’s ok. Any kind of injury to his right arm… not good.
by Charlie on Sep 3, 2008 8:40 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
he got hit in the hand by a pitch

Be selective, Bixler...
Volquez isn’t giving you anything to hit with Ohlendorf coming up next.

To those of you watching this on the tube...
how far out of the strike zone was strike three to Bixler?
by ElliottBayBucco on Sep 3, 2008 8:59 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Luigi!!
Nice clutch hit on an 0-2 count. He’s actually contributing his last several starts.
Next challenge — breaking the Mendoza line.

Grabow's line for 1/3 IP
17 pitches, 6 strikes.
Gahd. Please put Capps in for the 9th, JR.

Nyjer Morgan
2 for 5 with a double. Guess that keeps Pearce nailed to the bench for another night.
Gahd (again).

No. 3 batter bunts
JR just loves his bunting. Now they’ve gone ahead and disrepected Mario — time to make them pay for dissing Mr. Hole.
by WstCstBucco on Sep 3, 2008 10:18 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
That's the way to make them pay, good ol' Black Hole
Isn’t it great the way JR took the bat out of the PBC’s only 2 good hitters, by having McClouth bunt which opened up an empty base for the Reds to intentionally walk Doumit, loading the bases and setting up LaRoche for the good ol’ DP.
Maybe JR is secretly getting signals from the Reds bench? Way to wast an inning.
