Pedro Martinez

One of my friends called it long ago and Dejan finally confirms it. The Pirates are looking into signing Pedro Martinez.

A veteran like him would be great for our young guys and I'd love to get him but not for the $7 mil he's looking for. He would be a great teacher and mentor and would probably throw a few good games too. But to me, he's not worth the $7 million he's asking.

I'm OK with Pedro

$7M is OK for Pedro. We have the money and for a year it is not much. Besides if he does well, he is traded by All Star break.

Having said that, I think he will fill a starting spot. For how long and how well is up for grabs. Also, I doubt if he will mentor anyone. He did not mentor any of the young Met pitchers. But even so, signing him is OK with me. But don’t expect too much.

Yeah, let's give him $7 million

so he can make a million bucks per start.

A guy who has seen and done just about everything in the game in a HOF-caliber career would be highly motivated to push his worn-out body to win a few games for the PBC.

Sure.

It Is Absurd ...

to believe that the Pirates would have any interest whatsoever in Martinez. He brings absolutely nothing to the table at this point in his “career”.

If this rumor is actually true, Team Coonington has either lost or misplaced its compass.

I'm ok with Pedro...

but 7 million is a bit high. No more than 5 for one year. Signing Pedro would do a few things…

- Give the team at least five quality starts and the pitching staff someone to emulate. Especially if the team has to ever fight Don Zimmer at anytime.

- The “Yinzers” who post on Dejan’s blog a reason to be happy about / complain about.

- NH some credibility to the marginal fans that he is making some effort to end the 16 year slide.

- And this sounds dumb, but is legit, it will boost merchandise sales. It worked for the Mets.

Ive Been Saying This The Entire Offseason

I popped a big one when I saw this headline. Ive been sayin the entire offseason that we need to sign Pedro. If he gives us ten starts, that would be enough. The signing would give us something to be excited about and merchandise sales would skyrocket. The stadium would be unusually filled whenever Pedro starts. Get this deal done. 7 million is worth it.

I agree sign him

It’s not like they’re signing derek bell or pat meares. He’s a Hall of Famer no doubt! 7 million isn’t really that much since they picked up Matt Morris at 10 MIL!!!! He HAS to be a better fit than Morris was, and of course people would talk about the Pirates finally around town. Because i am SSOO sick of hearing about the Steelers all the time!
