Community Projection: Freddy Sanchez

Next up in our Community Projections is Freddy Sanchez. Guess how he'll do in 2009 in the comments by predicting his 2009 batting average, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage, in that order. Sanchez has a 2010 option that automatically vests if he makes the All-Star team and has 600 plate appearances, so for our bonus let's predict the number of plate appearances Sanchez will have in 2009

Here are Sanchez's career numbers. If you've been lurking at Bucs Dugout, Community Projections are an easy and fun way to get involved, so get to it.

* * *

Here are the results of the Community Projections so far, including the Adam LaRoche projection, which is now closed:

NAME POS. COMMUNITY BONUS
Ryan Doumit C .289/.346/.477 115 games played
Adam LaRoche 1B .279/.350/.508 10th HR on June 11

The Pirates are playing the Braves in Atlanta on June 11th. The community's projection would be a tick better than LaRoche's performance last year, when he hit .270/.341/.500 and hit his 10th homer off Doug Brocail nearly a month later, on July 8. It sounds like you believe that this is the year LaRoche's first half / second half madness stops.

depends on the shoulder

I’ll say he’s most of the way back: .290/.330/.415

by Chad Bahamas on Jan 18, 2009 10:47 PM EST reply actions

Still has a slightly "ouchy" shoulder...

.285/.315/.400

Falls just short with 550 at bats.

I see a rebound in the average:

.305/.340/.420

Plate appearances-and not at-bats being the operative term if I read Charlie correctly-I’d say 525 because he’ll miss some games he and there with minor injuries.

by patthatt on Jan 18, 2009 11:10 PM EST reply actions

That’s correct—it’s plate appearances, not at bats.

Well, I was a celebrating the steelers slightly...

and couldn’t figure out how to spell appearances, so I wasn’t really thinking.

by EndlessMike on Jan 19, 2009 8:02 AM EST up reply actions

And I'll remind everyone - don't drink and post.

I’ll stick with my numbers though…

However, I hope my BA/OBP/SLG predictions are low and Freddy rebounds and plays much better – maybe even taking a few walks.

Time to see the old Freddy...

.301/.339/.409

He’s only had one full season with the Pirates in which he had under 600 plate appearances from what I saw….492 in ’05

I’m going to say 612 plate appearances.

.315/.360/.424 -- 565 PA

No matter how good he hits this year, they’ll play the fragility card and never let him close to having the option kick in. If he’s healthy, I see a pretty good year.

hmm…600 plate appearances

550 plate appearances and 1 trip to the DL.

About as hollow a .290 as you can put up. Dude doesn’t walk and has no power.

512 PAs.

.308/.330/.433 - 583 PA

He’ll be a bright spot for the general public and about average for people who actually like runs.

I also think he’ll be the Pirate all-star, for what that’s worth…can we get bonus points for predicting that too?

Injury free and swinging at everything.

He can't have a high...

OBP with out a high average. He doesn’t walk enough. Therefore swing away Sanchez, swing away. Will be spelled by Vazquez enough not to reach the required PA’s. Unless he gets the All-Star nod. At which point let’s hope we can move him. 8mil for 2010, is way too much!

.329/.373/.478

Side note 58 2B.

Clairification

If Sanchez is an all-star choice, his contract PA’s drop from 654 to 600. If he doesn’t make the all-star team the PA’s are set at 654. His career high is 653.

PA’s (Plate Appearances) not AB’s (At Bats)

by BSpar on Jan 19, 2009 12:32 PM EST up reply actions

Further...

600 PA’s is a lock, barring serious injury. Unless they just totally dis him, which would not bode well in the public perception arena.

by BSpar on Jan 19, 2009 12:35 PM EST up reply actions

there's no way Freddy repeats his '08 1st half struggles

Freddy Sanchez was awful in the first half of ’08, but finished strong:
2008, pre-All Star break: 226/251/301
2008, post-All Star break: 346/378/483

in 2009, I’m guessing he will be midway between his career marks (300/336/417) and his ’08 second half performance:

323/357/450

with these numbers and Chase Utley’s injuries, Freddy makes the All-Star team and finishes with 625 plate appearances.

Near career average, but “bounce back” as well. Perhaps the OBP is too generous.
598 PA, no all-star game.
