Pirates Sign Paul Mildren, Erik Kratz
To minor league deals. Paul Mildren, a reliever, used to be a pretty good starting pitching prospect in the Marlins' system, but he's struggled pretty badly the past two years and isn't likely to reclaim much of his former promise. I think he might be the first Australian in the Pirates' system since Brett Roneberg, though. (UPDATE: Oops--Endless Mike points out that I forgot Josh Hill.) Erik Kratz should be an organizational catcher--he'll probably hit some bombs for Altoona, but won't come anywhere near the majors.

I remember him. He’s before Hill and Roneberg, though.

Adrian Burnside
is getting ready to start his second season with the Yomiuri Giants of Japan’s Central League. When I saw him last year, he rarely threw a fastball over the equivalent of 86 mph, but he sure had figured out how to get batters out for about 5 innings a start.
Off topic,
but ESPN Classic is showing Game 7 of the ’92 NLCS.
It’s just not right what we Pirate fans have had to endure from that day to the present.
I guess we just have to keep believing that somehow, someway the team will find a way to win again early next decade.
Is Leyland
going to let Drabek start the ninth again? I’ll pass.
