What If 20101 Lineup
What if NH had not made any of the rades he did in 2008/2009? If we had kept Bay, Nady, Marte, etc thru the end of this season and then lost them via FA. My assumptions:
- All players who were eligible do leave via FA (Bay, Nady, Marte, Grabow, LaRoche)
- We don't pickup the options on Freddy or Jack
- No trades of any of the players at all. Not even McLouth, Gorzelanny, Snell, or Morgan
- No signing of any major league FA
- We still pick up Meek and Veal as Rule 5
- We pick up Jones via Minor League FA
- We still draft Alverez and Sanchez
- We still get Delwyn Young and others guys that were minor league pickups If we assume the above, what would our lineup and SP look like?
-
C-Doumit with Paulino as backup
1B-Pearce/Jones
2B-Shelby Ford or Young
SS-Bixler or Cruz
3B-Walker
LF-Morgan
CF-McCutchen
RF-McLouth
-
SP: Duke, Maholm, Snell, Gorzelanny, Dumatrait
-
BullPen: Capps, Burnett, Meeks, Yates, Bautista, Bootcheck, Jackson, Chavez
Would we want to move Alverez up to the majors in 2010 because our other 3B options are weak? Do we move up Lincoln as well?
Would we really win any more/less games in 2010? I doubt if we would have won many more games in 2008/2009 than we did. We certainly would not have played .500 or made the playoffs.
What do you think?

Good outfield, terrible infield, “meh-on-a-good-day” starters, and bad bullpen. So, looks pretty close to what we have now, just minus the prospects (and maybe plus a couple compensation draft picks). Our actual infield is probably a bit better and our outfield a bit worse, but it’s close overall.

Bixler Or Cruz At SS?
Scary, scary thought! Bixler makes Mark Reynolds look like a player with exceptional plate discipline!

If we're talking about a world...
…where Littlefield never lost power, it’d probably still have Paulino starting over Doumit.
Remember all the talk a couple of weeks ago about a roster that’d lose 110+ games? You’re lookin’ at it, right here. And the worst part of it isn’t even here – think about who the contingency plan would be for any given injured player. There aren’t adequate replacements for ANYBODY.

We’d sign Randy Winn, Jerry Hairston and Bartolo Colon at $5-7 million each to round out the roster.
Also there’s no way we would draft Alvarez, because he’s a Scott Boras client.

Yea, Scary!
It is interesting that for all of the trades, we won’t look a whole lot better in 2010 than we would have w/o the trades. BUT we should start to look better in 2011!

Maybe the season has just ended ...
But I think the team will be much improved next year. The starting rotation is at least average. In fact, it could be good.
The bullpen has to be better next year. Veal will be at AAA. Hanrahan is a solid 8th inning guy. Capps can’t be that terrible again, can he?
The Pirates are at least average at catcher. An infield of Jones, LaRoche, Cedeno and probably Walker at third isn’t terrible. It’s average defensively with some potential offensively. The outfield starts with Milledge and Cutch. This is where a smart free agent signing or trade could make all the difference. You need a solid bat for RF.
But it’s at least a young team with upside. I’m actually more optimistic about the team than I’ve been in 10 years.
Moreover, if Walker shows he can play, he’ll got to the OF when Alvarez comes up.

I would be pissed if...
that was our team. I imagine though, that if Dave Littlefield was still our GM, somone would have shot him after this year.

Just curious.....
Has Pearce, in anyone’s opinion, proved he deserves another chance starting at first? A platoon vs lefties? Is there any sabermetric stat that says he is more useful than he appears?

If Jones doesn’t significantly improve his .208/.243/.455 against lefties, I’d either keep Pearce around or find a better RH bat for the platoon.
by Adam Reynolds on Oct 12, 2009 9:38 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
That's the question.
Can we find a better RH bat for that role?
If so, I’m probably willing to cut the cord at this point.

Bench player at best
I think Pearce will be a bench player at best…..he is not who management thought he was going to be

This look at what-could-have-been shows that standing still would have made them even further away from contention. There are enough plusses on the roster that would make people think they were close to contention (great outfield, a couple of decent starting pitchers), when in reality, they aren’t even close.
It is evident that NH is targeting former first rounders who teams have either given up on, or get frustrated with, such as Thrilledge, Clement, and Hansen. These moves have a lot of high-risk, high-reward in them, but its refreshing to see the Buccos try to target potential talent for once. Any other possibilities you can think of from other systems? The only one I can think of, and he doesn’t make much sense for the Buccos, is BJ Upton.

Naturally.
Standing still ALWAYS takes you further away from contention. That’s entropy at work.
I’ll think about busted prospects with promise, and get back to you.

Last night, I came up with a few names:
James Loney
Jed Lowrie
Ian Kennedy
Chris Nelson
Taylor Teagarden

Couple more...
Delmon Young
JR Towles
Matt Antonelli
Brandon Wood
by Slick1 on Oct 13, 2009 12:32 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Towles is a good call.
I think Wood is set to start for the Angels this year, now that Figgins is a FA and Rodriguez is in Tampa.
I’d be careful with Antonelli – I think he was just oversold coming up.
by Vlad on Oct 13, 2009 12:47 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
In Woods Defense
Wood has not really had a shot with Figgins and Aybar performing in the majors…you can expect a guy to come up in only in September and play a couple times in a month and then expect to see his potential…..and hes only 24 so how can he be a bust yet?
by cmeiers on Oct 13, 2009 5:48 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, there are some good names out there. It looks like Wood hasn’t taken advantage of whatever opportunities he has and maybe Big Mike has soured on him. I think eh might be ideal, but if Figgins leaves Anaheim, they wouldn’t give him up. Kennedy is coming off surgery for an aneurysm…might want to wait and see on that one. But since he’s not on the Yanks radar with their signings and Joba and Hughes, he could be available. Delmon Young has some potential, but absolutely NO plate discipline. I’d steer clear. Some good ones out there though. One organization’s trash is another’s future…or somethin like that

Brandon Wood
Saltalamacchia
Felix Pie
Franklin Morales
Maybe Homer Bailey, but his stats look palatable this year because of facing the Pirates so many times. Plus the Reds can’t afford to get rid of him with their lack of depth.

I think we're already too late...
…on Bailey and Pie.

he’s still got a good steal rate but his plate discipline went way in the hell south last year. his strikeout to walk rate went from 1.38 to 2.67. his bat just won’t play in the outfield right now, though an upton-mccutchen-milledge OF would be great defensively. he’s only 25 and has good numbers in the minors so he’s got a good shot of bouncing back. tampa’s not stupid and he wouldn’t come at a price we could afford to pay.
also, did you know his real name is melvin emanuel upton? i’d probably go by a nickname too if i were him.

Over at the PBC Blog in the afternoon 10/12 thread, they’re still spewing crap about how Bay/McLouth/Nady was the “best offensive outfield in baseball” of course ignoring both defense and the concept of career years for McLouth/Nady that won’t be replicated. Even more laughable is the same nitwit claims that Gorzelanny had “major success” after he was traded.
These same “fans” would be complaining if we had signed Bay, Nady, Gorzelanny, and Grabow to huge long term deals and they sucked for the next 3-5 years.

Nady...
I can’t believe anyone there is still talking about Xavier Nady. It’s crazy. Dang, we lost Damaso Marte and his 9.45 ERA and we woulda been 69-92 if Nady had played those 7 games this year with the Pirates…

I wouldn't mind...
having Nady back for this year until Tabata is ready. I have always liked him.

Will they still be playing baseball in 20101?

I was waiting for some wisea** to mention the title. But since you used lyrics from a the Song “2025”, you get 5 style points.

If you listen closely to that song, particularly at the end,
you’ll hear the singer has a terrible lisp.

What game is that
"Polamalu’s lineage can be traced through several roots. Chuck Norris mated with an Amazon Queen, and on the other side, Tony Hawk mated with Mother Nature. The two children of these spawned and fused in a tantric love session to create Troy Polamalu. The mother however died as he tore through the birth canal with a spin move."
