More on the Perry Hill situation
As some had indicated...Perry Hill wants to continue coaching...just not with the Pirates. Certainly with the statements we have now seen from Hill and management...mainly Huntington...it appears that any family concerns are not the main problem.
I see two possibilities...
1) There is a problem between management (read Huntington and Coonelly) and underlings. Buckley (minor league pitching coordinator) left...under somewhat uncertain circumstances. Now it appears that Hill and the management team were not on the same page. Whether it be promises that were made before he signed...or something he knows he was going to be expected to do next year...there is obviously enough hard feelings for Perry not to return.
2) It's about the money. This one I find hard to swallow. Coaches aren't millionaires...at least most of them. I've seen Dave Duncan anywhere between $800 K and $1M. Rudy Jaramillo signed with the Cubs today for 3 years/$2.4M. So...if it was about money...can't imagine it would be more than a couple of hundred grand. Russell is at $800K as manager. If that small amount of money is a problem...the Pirates are in deep trouble.
My guess...possibility #1 is real close to the truth...and we may never find out exactly where the problem is...but there is one.

I assume
People will now call Neal Huntington a liar etc. etc. for saying Perry did not want to coach.
But I just want to know why he doesn’t want to come back. Either way, I still agree with keeping him under contract either way.

I suspect...
we will EVENTUALLY find out the reasons Hill left…just not in the next few weeks. Unless some of the players know what’s going on and talk…it will probably be about the time Perry gets another job…or the current management team starts looking for other employment opportunities…whichever comes first.
And when it comes to the players…I’d say that speaking your mind appears to be a good way to change your Pittsburgh residency status from resident to non-resident.

We Should
Talk Hill up.
Maybe it will result in another team trading someome for the rights to hire him.

Discontent in Pirate land.
Perry Hill is just first on the faLLout fron NH’s moves. Good people wont stand for
his wreckless moves. It seems more and more of his prospects are winding up in
the doctors office. He needs to learn that quality wins over quanity everytime. Maybe
when management evaluates the cost they’ll toss him. Why do they want another
pitching coach? Probably the present one is looking elsewhere. How many coaches did Danny Murtaugh have?

Oh . . . just for fun, let’s respond to this . . . .
It seems more and more of his prospects are winding up in
the doctors office.
Really? Name them.
Probably the present one is looking elsewhere.
That probably explains why he re-signed for 2010.

Isn't it usually a good thing...
…when you’re “wreckless”?
My auto insurance company seems to think so…

Hasn’t anyone considered that maybe Perry Hill just wants to be back in Texas? Maybe to work as an instructor or coach for the Rangers again?
Why do they want another
pitching coach?
Maybe Joe Kerrigan has told them he might want a second chance to manage again?
How many coaches did Danny Murtaugh have?
23. The only consecutive seasons with the exact same guys were 1961-62 and 1974-75-76. Most of his coaching staffs were only 4 guys at a time.
So because Russell is getting 7 of his 8 coaches back, the sky is falling and everyone in the Pirates front office are completely either evil or incompetent.
Honestly now, has anyone considered that maybe Perry Hill isn’t coming back to the Pirates because PNC Bank has canceled next spring? (Thanks WTM re: Oct 4, 2009 8:10 PM EDT)

Isn’t the meme on the PBC Blog and etc. that they are evil and incompetent? That doesn’t make much sense if you think about it, but whatever.

Yeah, basically they only care about money but they’re also trying to alienate their fanbase so nobody goes to games. It’s like people who think the federal government is completely incompetent but is able to cover up massive conspiracies for decades.

You just don't get it
It’s not the government covering up massive conspiracies, it’s “shadowy government agencies”. Jesus. I mean, duhhh. Much smarter and sneakier than the actual government.
