New monument for 'Suitcase' to be unveiled Saturday at West Hill Cemetery
Any readers from Georgia may be interested in attending an event 11 a.m. this Saturday in Dalton, where the city will be dedicating a new monument in honor of ex-Pirate Harry "Suitcase" Simpson in West Hill Cemetery. Simpson, a former Negro League player and an All-Star with the Royals in 1956, lived in Dalton and began his professional career there. Appropriately enough, the monument will be located on Suitcase Simpson Drive.

This brings up my semiannual small rant
Josh Gibson, the “Black Babe Ruth,” is buried in Allegheny Cemetery with a headstone about the size of a legal pad. He’s buried an infield fly from Gus Greenlee’s grave, which is big and loud and elaborate, just like Greenlee. Why hasn’t anyone in Pittsburgh thought it fit to name a street or build a monument to the greatest home run hitter in Negro Leagues history?

OK
so up in the Hill there’s a baseball field named for Gibson, but I ran Google searches for “Josh Gibson Bridge,” “Josh GIbson Street” and “Josh Gibson Avenue” and nothing comes up, for Pittsburgh or anywhere.

I am forced to agree.
I didn’t realize that Gibson had so little representation among the monuments of the area.

I am new to the area and other than the baseball field named for him, I hadn’t seen anything either. Unfortunate…
