Jim Tracy, Baby! NL Manager of the Year!
Also, Mike Scioscia received the AL award.
If the opinions on the ROY were strong, I expect stronger reactions on Tracy's award. Unfortunately, even if what happened with the Rockies was just a case of Tracy taking over when a good team was getting hot, it's hard to argue with that record when the team was (what?) a dozen games below .500 when he took over...

aaaaaaand
they followed it up by signing him to a 3 year extension. what are the chances he finishes this contract out?
It's fun when it happens to another team, though.
Hey, an out is an out - unless you're Mario, in which case it's probably two outs. -UtesFan89
How do you know?
Tracy was a horrible fit in Pittsburgh. No doubt. Of course he was put in a horrible situation.
He seemed like the perfect fit in Colorado. In any case the money guaranteed to a manager for 3 years is a spit in the bucket to an MLB team so I really don’t see a problem with this…….
He's done great in Colorado...
…because he hasn’t had to make any difficult decisions or deal with any real adversity. Sure, he’d probably continue to perform adequately if nothing ever goes wrong for them, until the end of time, but how likely is that?
I heard what got him the 3 year deal is that Tracy reminded them that he used to manage the Dodgers.
How Did Jim Tracy Get So Smart?
In this post http://www.bucsdugout.com/2009/9/12/1027165/how-did-jim-tracy-get-so-smart back in Sept. I asked how he got so smart. It looks like the voters thought he was pretty smart as well.
I agree with Vlad that this will not end well.
Neal Huntington, Epic Fail.
See, he should have kept Jim Tracy, then the Pirates would have been in the playoffs this year. Never mind that he actually has some good players in Colorado.
About as credible as the rest of the baseball writer awards, which is not at all. I’m half-shocked that they picked the right player for AL Cy Young.
No 20 game winner
made the goofs look a little further into the actual performances instead of rubber stamping Felix for one more win that he would have had no control of. Not that I’m saying anything bad about Hernandez’s season, Greinke was a better pitcher this year.
I wish....
…we could get a great manager like Jim Tracy someday. Oh, wait…nevermind. lol

All the awards in the world
won’t make Tracy a good manager. A lucky one, maybe. Unless … he actually learned something from his failures, but he never seemed like the kind of guy who would let himself be swayed by evidence contrary to what he believed was set in stone, which was just about everything.
How we can tell if he’s a changed man: He’ll give his players all the credit.
We all know Jim Tracy sucks
But this is more understandable, in that there’s really no way to quantify a manager’s value. The Rockies were playing poorly, and after Tracy took over, they played well. It’s an easy call to make, even though, again, Jim Tracy sucks.
At the start of the playoffs, a customer came in to where I work wearing a Dodgers team jacket and hat. I talked to him about baseball when I was making his food and mentioned I was a Pirates fan. I said “yeah, so we both know that Jim Tracy is not the manager he’s made out to be” and his eyes got all big, he nodded and said “yeah, he was horrible at his job. He cost the Dodgers more games than anyone on the team.”
Moral of the story: it’s only a matter of time.

I still hate LaTracy
"Baseball is better than football. Think about it, eighty degrees, a cold beer and a short-sleeve shirt is better than 30 degrees, a hip flask and six layers of clothes under a lap blanket. Take your pick: suntan or frostbite. " - Thomas Boswell
I have far fewer gripes against Tracy- my following the Pirates only involved a couple of months of Tracy.
It seems hard to argue against his record with the Rox. Regardless of whether he got lucky or not, I must say that different people perform differently in different situations. Depending on how the surrounding circumstances fit you and your style, I can well imagine the results being different.
Since Tracy, we’ve had John Russell, who hasn’t distinguished himself all that much, imo, and we gave him 3 years too. Perhaps we only did that to tide over what was certain to be a terrible stretch, nonetheless…
I’ve heard some of the gripes against Tracy, blowing out arms- Gorzo… can someone point to other links, perhaps from BD or elsewhere, or comment threads where there was more discussion of Tracy’s tenure with the Bucs?
Would you rather have Jim Tracy or Tim Johnson? Stellar managers both…

Johnson, in a rout
He’s a good storyteller, so at least the press conferences would be interesting. I’d rather have anecdotes about Johnson beating grizzly bears to death with his enormous genitals than another round of “where we’re at, right now”.
No one is “arguing against his record”. They’re arguing that he’s a terrible game manager saddled with a ridiculously loaded team.

The most overrated award in professional sports.
Jim Tracy won the award because he had talent to work with. As long as you win, your name will be in the running.
Though in fairness to Tracy...
…he IS a manager, and 2009 IS a year. So at least they got that much right.
