Bay rejects $60M over 4 years
I am not sure he will get more than $15M per, although I guess he wants more years. My first reaction was, it will never happen. My second reaction is, it probably will, and someone is going to regret it two years down the line.
Fenway Park fits Bay very well, and I m not sure what signing elsewhere is going to do for him. So who do people think is the likeliest to dole out Alfonso Soriano-esque stupid money for Bay for his age-32 season onward?
I have a feeling the RedSox could up their offer, but I don't see them adding more than 1 year. The Cubs? if they can get rid of Bradley's contract? Angels? Yanks? Mets? Braves?

I would bet on the Mets.
They have a knack for that sort of thing.
Hey, an out is an out - unless you're Mario, in which case it's probably two outs. -UtesFan89
God I hope not
Born Mets fan – watching the last few years has hurt, a lot. Not as much as it’s hurt actual Mets players, of course….
Seriously, Bay would be an awful fit at Citi.
Why the hate for David DeJesus?

I like DeJesus. He’s a good all-around player, but you wouldn’t pay him like a superstar. Probably shouldn’t for Bay, either, when he has the same total value (offense plus defense) as DDJ.

Bay must think. . .
. . . Yanks or Mariners are going to step up with more than $15M per year for 4 years. (I don’t think Mets will play in this league this winter.)
Yanks need a starting LF (also looking at Chone Figgins) and would love to replace an ex-Red Sox (Damon) with a Red Sox, Seattle is Bay’s winter home.
Any comment from any of those PBC fans who said in 2008 that NH should just sign Bay to an extension?
I’d bet that Mariners GM Jack Z. is too savvy to toss all his money in here. Same can’t be said for the Yankees or especially Mets, though.

In spite of the Yanks massive spending
they’ve hardly tossed all their cash into the same FA. They’ve distributed it across FAs…
But seriously, they have money to throw away, but the investments are not horrible. Sabathia and Tex are 29- they have 7 and 8 year contracts. Pitchers don’t lose it after 35, and Sabathia’s injury track record is particularly good… 8 for Tex is slightly high, but still ok, through his age 37 season, 1B, don’t know about his history?
Burnett is the more injury prone one, and 32, and he’s the risk the Yanks are taking…
In spite of it, I can imagine the Yanks going 5/6 yrs for 17M…
can’t see Ms do it… anyone think the Cubs will have a “which is the worst contract” OF with Bay, Bradley and Soriano (Bradley in CF!)?
This year, their bonus babies all worked out. Historically, though, Cashman doesn’t have a sterling record. I thought the Burnett deal was most likely to fail this year, but he delivered a World Series. Thus he at least paid off a little bit even if he flops later on. It’s the same reason the Yankees wouldn’t take back the Ohlendorf/Karstens/Tabata deal. Damaso Marte got the high-leverage outs in the WS, and that’s all they care about.
The Yankees always throw money at what they see as the best players. Luckily for them, the best players this past offseason were actually very good.

Yanks ain't in bad payroll shape in the OF
Damon’s and Matsui’s 4 year,$52M contracts are off their books. Word is the Yanks will say goodbye to both.
Also off the books are the 2009 contracts of OF Eric Hinske ($1.5M) and Xavier Nady ($6.65M).
So the Yanks have plenty of OF money to throw at Bay, if they want to and still decrease their 2009 payroll.
Regarding an extension
The only thing I’ll say is that the reason Bay is looking at $15M/year is that he just spent 2 years looking like a star in Boston. If he’d had identical seasons in Pittsburgh (with his D looking worse), no one would say that he’s the best FA available. Remember how quickly the buzz on Bay developed once he got to Boston, even though he played exactly as well as he’d played in Pittsburgh (excepting the bad knees season)?
That said, the guy clearly wants maxbucks, and never would have gotten it here.
I said in a thread
about a month or so ago that JBay won’t get $15M. I think it’s gonna be close.
Free your ass and your mind will follow.
i think he will
i don’t have much of a feel for the market, and i had no clue till now… but now that the redsox have set the bar, he will get more money or more years…

For the record
I think Bay is nuts to turn this down. I get that it’s early in the offseason, but 4/$60 simply isn’t a bad deal by length or price, and Boston’s a great fit for him.
The one thing I’ll say is that he’s possibly aware that his next contract will be a pittance, and needs to maximize the years on this one. He’ll probably do better on a 6/$75 deal than he would on 4/$60 plus his next contract.
Or maybe he’s in complete denial about his likely decline over he next few years.
Agree-He Won't Do Much Better Than This!
While I think testing the FA waters is a smart thing, I think he will end up signing with Boston for basically the same $s and years.
The only other option is if the Yankees wants to stick it to Boston and “steal” another one of their “stars”.
Lastly, if he still was a Pirate, he would not be getting anywhere near this. He should send NH a thank you card and take him out to dinner for what NH did for him!
I do think
we will see a 6/$90-100M deal. Someone will pay the big bucks. That said, the other likely alternative is taking up Boston’s 4/$60M a little down the road. Boston gives him the best chance to pick up another decent paycheck 4 years down the road!
If he were to take a 4/$70M with the Mets (say) I dont think this happens I’d guess thats it! As JRoth points out above, Citi field would be horrible for Bay.

Well
If Bay came back to Boston to okay the old offer after he rejected the contract, would Boston choose to try to lower the price? knowing that he wasn’t getting anything else close to that $60M/4yr? It’s nice to see another team, hold their ground rather than just upping the price to pay whatever agents/players want, but then again we’ll see how this unfolds.
