Jose Tabata Goes 6-for-7 in Arizona Fall League Game
Insanity. Jose Tabata is now 6-for-6 with two doubles in Scottsdale's game against the Peoria Javelinas. Also, Chase D'Arnaud has reached base five times in the game. Scottsdale leads 17-8. None of the Pirates' pitchers have entered the game, fortunately.
Tabata is now hitting .395 in the AFL. His status as a prospect has improved a bunch in the past few weeks. I want to say that it's time to start getting excited, but I don't want to jinx it.
UPDATE: He finished 6-for-7, his batting average back to .392. Unacceptable! Back to the batting cages, Jose.

Tabata is due up 2nd in the top of 9th
If he gets this hit for the magical 7 for 7 plateau he will also win the AFL batting title!

almost missed in the Tabata outburst...
D’Arnaud 2-4 with 3 walks…hitting .296 after hitting .291 at West Virginia and .295 at Lynchburg…and .286 at SC in 2008. Slight improvement in BA at every step. Guess that means he’ll hit .300 at Altoona this year.

I'm really looking forward to seeing Tabata develop in 2010.
And I hope we don’t have to wait too much longer than mid-May to see him. I’m hoping this is one player Huntington doesn’t mind becoming a Super 2 so we can get him more ABs his rookie year.
D’Arnaud is going to have a lot of eyes on him in AA. If only we can fill SS, we might have an actual team without any dead weight in the lineup. (OK, assuming Doumit is healthy but hey, I can dream right?)

Don't get all crazy now
Tabata’s had a nice AFL, but he’d get the bat knocked out of his hands if promoted early in next year. He needs more upper minors development time.

Yeah, he's only 21
Maybe I’m a sucker for lost causes, but I’d like to try to stay excited for Jones, Moss, Milledge, and Clement for a while longer before I jump them in favor of the 21-year-old with half a year of AAA experience.

Especially since hopping the 21-year-old to the front of the line right now...
…means that he’ll be discarded for peanuts in two years, a “failure” at 23, and then bust out on someone else’s roster at 25.

Paging Jose Guillen...Jose Guillen?
I’m all for bringing him up when his play dictates a call. But yeah, let’s not bring up a 21 year old and then pile on that he’ “immature.”

I don't think he will be up mid May.
But I do think he will be up in June. Clement will make it north to start the season, and after 2 months, one of either Clement, Milledge or Jones will be struggling or hurt.
And that’s when they will bring up Tabata.

That is assuming Tabata is hitting near .300 in AAA. If he is having a hard time, they won’t bring him up and will give Pearce another shot.

this may happen
but if we sign an outfielder, I don’t see Tabata in the majors in 2010. My guess is, however, if they think he will be ready to play in 2011, then they bring him up as late as possible to avoid super-2, but get him some experience in the big leagues. I also expect to see them wait to see more power from him…

Even if we do sign an outfielder...
Someone will probably under perform. Ankiel is not guaranteed to set the world on fire if he’s signed. Milledge might not be as good as we expect. If they feel Tabata is ready, he will be up. They will find a place for him.
I don’t see this as a Jose Guillen situation, because Guillen went from high A to MLB, and Guillen had a pathetically low walk rate in the minors which translated into disaster in the majors. If you don’t have good plate discipline, then it’s tough to hit well in MLB. The pitchers can make you hit their pitches instead of having to throw something over the plate.
Tabata has a walk rate much closer to McCutchen’s. That said, it could stand to be a bit better.

If Tabata's hitting .300 at AAA...
…and they bring him up, he’ll probably hit .270 with below-average power and walks for the rest of the year.
That’s not helping him develop, and it’s not helping the team improve in 2010, either.

Keep Him Down on the Farm for 2010
He needs more maturity (both personal and baseball). So keep him in AAA for 2010, But a Sept callup might be in order for him!

The Pirates will never give their most valuable prospects a Sept callup.
That just starts their clock ticking and makes them delay their call up next year. The fact it happened to Walker this year means they don’t value him all that much.

can't wait
The earlier they call up Tabata and Alvarez, the better. I can’t wait! What are the chances Tabata makes it to the show out of spring training???
