Shortstop – Jack Wilson, Pittsburgh and Seattle
Wilson won’t win a Gold Glove this year. Just like Mark Teixeira didn’t win one last year. He split time between leagues, and the Gold Glove voters don’t know which league to put him in. Not so with The Fielding Bible Awards. Jack Wilson was the best shortstop in baseball last year. Period. We don’t care which league he played in. He led all shortstops in Run Saved by a wide margin (27 runs saved to Brendan Ryan’s 19) and has taken over the MLB lead for most Runs Saved over the last three years (51). Mr. Wilson is the Fielding Bible Award winner at shortstop for 2009.

Interestingly...considering his reputation among some Pirates fans...
the entry about the 3B award (won by Zimmerman)…named 9 3B that COULD have won the award. None of them named LaRoche.

Well, if he's a little bit above average...
…(which is what I think), then he probably falls somewhere in the 10-15 range.
I don’t remember anyone calling for him to win a GG this year. And if they did, they shouldn’t have.

Russell did I believe.
Could have been Hill though, I don’t remember. Anyway, just saying! Good for Jack anyway. Good to see him get some respect for his D.

Hill is who started that GG talk with Andy.
BTW, he had a bonus clause in his contract tied to GG winners.
Anyway, Jack definitely deserves one. I’m afraid for Zach Zuke come next year. Our infield is going to have more piddlers leaking through than the Maneken Pis.
Let’s hope JJ Hardy is non-tendered.

That kind of stuff is OK.
I don’t think there are any managers/coaches who don’t try to pump up their own guys a little bit.

I can live with...
a little above average…which may be very close to the truth…with the glove. But some (not you, Vlad…I think you are reasonably assessing him) seemed to think he’s one of the best glove 3B in the majors…which hasn’t been the case.
I’m somewhat concerned about moving him…considering the normal defensive dropoff from a move from 3B to 2B. I don’t doubt that he would still be a better fielder at 2B than Delwyn Young…but then one starts wondering about the difference in offensive production. (Also dependent on which Delwyn Young is the real one, April-July Delwyn, or August-October Delwyn.)

I think the April-October Delwyn...
…is the real Delwyn, give or take a little bit. He’s not as good as he looked at the start, and he’s not as bad as he looked at the end.
I, too, am crossing my fingers a bit on the LaRoche-to-2B thing.

I'm also curious...
as to where Nyjer Morgan would end up in the plus/minus categories…if his time in LF and CF were combined.
Since these (by the summary on the Fielding Bible webpage) are counting stats…Nyjer would not have played enough of either position to win the awards. His 117 games were almost equally split (56 in CF, 61 in LF).

Interestingly enough...
…Fangraphs posted something along those lines yesterday, using three-year UZR numbers. According to them, Nyjer was the second-best defensive OF in baseball over that time span, and among the top 20 fielders at any position.

Small sample size alert...
to see the 3 year numbers…you have to do an “all qualifiers” listing. I found one surprising name above Morgan’s in UZR/150…Ryan Doumit. Granted…based on 39 games…but a surprise none the less as that would be just under one quarter season.

At least to see Morgan’s name…you have to do “all qualifiers”.

That's strange
3-4 years ago, I thought subjectively that Jack was the best defensive shortstop in the NL and deserved a Gold Glove, until I looked at some numbers and convinced myself that Everett and probably Furcal were better (Vi2quel, of course, won the GG). Now, in a year when I wasn’t particularly impressed with Wilson, he’s the best SS glove in baseball? At his age? Seriously?
Maybe it’s a function of I wasn’t watching closely enough, or maybe it’s a function that the other SSs are either aging or just about out of the game too (I see Everett is on the market again).

Everett really was otherworldly back then.
But as you speculated, I think his age is catching up to him.
