I just saw this too, and it seems like the Bucs might be able to get a little more for Capps. Kelly Johnson is extremely likely to be non-tendered if not traded. Capps had a bad year, and his value is the lowest its been, which is unfortunate, but his save number is not bad…

also, who do you think would be closing for the bucs? Hanrahan? Meek? I’d go with Hanrahan…

I doubt Johnson-for-Capps is happening now, for obvious reasons.

Anything else Atlanta could reasonably send us for Capper?

Capps for Medlen and Ryan Church

What about Kris Medlen and Ryan Church, and a mid level prospect for Matt Capps and Daniel Moskos. The reason I say this is because Medlen is already in a crowded rotation and make no mistake hes a SP not a long reliever. Ryan Church could be useful for the Bucs because hes that corner outfielder power we are looking for and could be a little less expensive as Rick Ankiel. Also, the Braves have OF choices in the minor leagues and ultimately the RF job will be Jason Heyward’s when he is ready so theyd be willling to deal Church.

I think the time is right to get rid of Capps and also send Daniel Moskos packing before he has virtually no trade value. Moskos is never going to crack the big league rotation and i think itd be smart to sweeten the deal to get a player like Medlen in the deal from the Braves.

Also, Hanrahan for closer. The kid is legit just wait and see . Best trade Huntington made last year hands down.

I like Medlen.

Church is kind of a tool as a person, but he’s a useful player.

Not sure the Braves would give up that much for Capps, but who knows?

Yeah, I thought Medlen was a fairly highly-touted prospect.

It seems rather absurd for Atlanta to deal Medlen for Capps when they could just resign Soriano or Gonzalez (heck, maybe even both). Medlen does still have some upside as a starter. I’m sure Atlanta would love a rotation of Vazquez/Hanson/Jurrjens/Lowe/Medlen, assuming Hudson does not return.

I could see Capps for Church/prospect happening, but I wouldn’t like that for the Pirates. Church doesn’t seem to add too much over Moss, nor over Ankiel (if we were to go that way).

Finally, Atlanta just signed Scott Proctor, who will join Moylan, Acosta, and O’Flaherty in their bullpen. Even without bringing any FAs back, they should be able to cobble a bullpen together fairly easily, without dealing any potentially valuable pieces.

Hudson's probably going to return.

They’re working on an extension right now.

by Vlad on Nov 5, 2009 8:51 AM EST up reply actions

Well, in that case

Perhaps Medlen can be had. I still think it would take more than Capps, though.

On another note, that is one hell of a rotation. Can you imagine being able to say that your 4-5 starters are Tim Hudson and Derek Lowe?

The speculation is that...

…they’re going to trade either Lowe or Vazquez to free up the money to keep Hudson.

But yeah, they’ve got some good arms on that staff.

dont see much use for church in pittsburgh right now

medlen is good… medlen for capps straight up? would we want something more? the mid level prospect?

i dare say moskos will be a lights out middle relief guy sometime!

by BurgherKing on Nov 4, 2009 5:29 PM EST up reply actions

In his proposal...

…presumably Church would start for us in RF, as the big half of a platoon. That’d probably work out OK – he’s a career .787 OPS and a plus glove.

It WOULD bring a few ex pirates together.

Capps, Laroche, McLouth, Gonzalez…

That is a decent percentage of a team there.
