Let's say we didn't trade Freddy...
...and he had been injured so his option did not vest. Now he can be a free agent. Iwamura is available. The Germans won the war and Spock has grown a beard and I have to get to 75 words so I'm desparately trying to come up with other absurd juxtapositions to show that we are in a bizarre parallel universe that does not bear any rational relationship to our own. If you choose option D, explain your work in a comment below.

F. Sanchez is the man
Freddy Sanchez was one of my favorite players, however, getting Tim Alderson was well worth the loss. Freddy probably wouldn’t have stayed in Pitt and we’d be in the situation anyway. Alderson + Iwamura = win win stiuation

If "we" didn't trade Freddy....
and Jason Bay, Xavier Nady, Damaso Marte, Nate McLouth, Jack Wilson, Adam LaRoche and Eric Hinske, then the Pirates would have been celebrating tonight instead of the Yankees.

Sooo...
…we were on our way to a championship season with all of those guys last year, before Bay, Nady, and Marte were moved? That’s what you’re saying? I hope this is a joke, and if it is, it’s pretty good, but you forgot Nyjer, if we didn’t trade him, we’d have repeated already!

D'oh!
I forgot Nyjer. But yeah, he’s Pujols-ian. He’s A-Rod-esque. He’s kind of like CC. With a full season of Nyjer, I bet it’ll be Washington Nationals vs. New York Yankees in the 2010 World Series. I wonder what the line is on that….

Not just a cornerstone.
He’s a future HOFer. He’s the greatest player of his generation.

A hospital, what is it. Well its a place where the doctors care for the ill but thats not important right now
"Polamalu’s lineage can be traced through several roots. Chuck Norris mated with an Amazon Queen, and on the other side, Tony Hawk mated with Mother Nature. The two children of these spawned and fused in a tantric love session to create Troy Polamalu. The mother however died as he tore through the birth canal with a spin move."

Thanks for voting.
Interesting results. I know everyone here respects Freddy Sanchez as a selfless team player, but this fan base is not shedding any emotional tears over him moving on.

I like how it played out.
I’d have rather the team made a serious effort to try Andy LaRoche at second, because I think there’s still potential there (maybe not blue-chip like was once thought, but certainly more room for growth than Iwamura). That said, you can’t take for granted that he could have played the position. We know Aki can.
That said, the poll options are being approached as if they were mutually exclusive.
What’s to say, for example, that the Pirates don’t plan on platooning LaRoche and Iwamura? Iwamura is actually better against lefties than righties despite being a lefty himself, but it’s by a marginal amount. Meanwhile, LaRoche’s splits from 2009 (not sure I want to use his full career just yet…I have an issue with taking scattered plate appearances as definitive) show him as a pretty strong lefty-masher.
The above scenario would give the team a chance to try LaRoche at second without going with a LaRoche or bust approach. If he plays well against lefties, great. Ship Iwamura at the deadline and make LaRoche the everyday 2B. If he can’t play the position, extend Aki…both sides have said they’re open to it, after all.

Forgot to mention: I’d rather have Alderson in the system and Aki – even if he’s just a stopgap – at the MLB level than just have Sanchez. Either way, you have an older second baseman with a similar style of play. Sanchez is only marginally better. I’ll take Sanchez-lite + a pitching prospect.
