JJ Hardy traded to the Twins!
Wow the hot stove season has gotten off to an early start. The Tehan trade was finally made official and I just read on MLBTradeRumors.com that JJ Hardy has been dealt to the Twins for Carlos Gomes.

I think Minnesota did pretty well here. I definitely thought Hardy could get more than a no hit all glove CF (albeit a really good glove). I have admit I was secretly hoping the Bucs could acquire him. He would have been a nice stop gap unitl D' Arnaud, or someone else, is ready. I have no problems with Cedeneo but I think we can do better defensively.

I think this is a good deal for both the Twins and the Brewers.
I made most of my life decisions at a Foghat concert... I stand by them.

i was hopping the same
I was jus going through trade scenarios in my head today, trying to figure out what itd take. The best I came up with was gorkys and diaz. Obviously not enough, brewers needed an mlb cf.

Hmmm
Seems like we could have offered more for Hardy, but then again I guess NH wasn’t interested? Gorkys I think would have been a good fit for the brewers, but then again I think they wanted a proven mlb CF rather than one who’s translation to the Majors you might not be sure on.
And...
Zach Dukes breathes a giant sigh of relief.
Of course given what the Brewers took, we probably could have gotten away with trading Duke for him. I wasn’t really thrilled with that from a Pirates perspective when it was proposed.

The Boston Globe reports that the Red Sox had been asking about Hardy since July and were offering Michael Bowden. The Brewers would only accept Bucholz or Bard and didn’t see a MLB CF possibility from the Sox so they pulled the trigger on the Gomez deal. I know Bowden’s stock has fallen a bit in the Red Sox organization, but I’m not sure I wouldn’t have taken that deal.
I guess the plan for the Brewers was that they wanted a young cost controlled guy at one of the spots (either pitcher or center field) so they could try to spend on the other.
It seems like the Brewers...
…like Gomez more than the conventional wisdom does.
That’s a good illustration of the danger of trying to reverse-engineer trade packages. Even if we consider Gorkys to be the equivalent of Gomez, for example, there’s no guarantee that the Brewers would feel the same way…
Capps
DK just reported that the Bucs offered Capps for Hardy.
Meanwhile, this is the thing that I hate about hot stove season – I was packing for a weekend trip on Friday, and so I missed this when it was new, and if not for the DK thing, I probably wouldn’t have noticed until like the 8th game vs. the Brewers next year, when I’d suddenly think, “Hey, where’s Hardy?” There’s so much downtime in the offseason that it’s easy to miss non-Pirates, non-blockbuster trades.
interesting
though i can’t blame the brewers for turning it down. between the return being capps and the deal being inside the division, i know i would have.
i wonder if this means NH is still hunting for infielders or if he was just trying to make a good deal when he had the chance. i’m going to guess the latter, though i’m sure he’s not averse to a cheap upgrade at SS.
