Ohlendorf -Drabek Comparison

About a couple weeks ago, I jokingly told someone that Ross Ohlendorf will be the new Doug Drabek.  I mean they were both acquired in trades from the Yankees.  Both had similar low 90's heat and low to average strikeout numbers as far as I could remember about Drabek.  I knew they had similar stats in their first full seasons with the Pirates just from remembering stats from old baseball cards from back in the day.  I decided to actually compare Ross' 09 #'s to Doug's in 87 and their lines are almost pretty identical.  Check it out

And they're both from Texas.

Went to church schools, over six feet tall and are Leo star sign.

OMG you’re right! Hehe.

Ross doesn't have a mullet!

Therefore, Drabek is better. And if you compare Ohlendorf’s 2009 season with Drabek’s 1987, Drabek gave up fewer homeruns, his WHIP was lower, his K/9 was higher and his BB/9 was lower…

Not by much...

their stats are as close as it will come. They still aren’t comparable pitchers though.

I suppose so.

And Ross was 26 this year while Drabek was 24 in 87.

Exactly.

Close stats, but Drabek was younger and a true ace. Ohlendorf is old enough that those numbers are good for a solid #3 starter. Maybe #2 absolute ceiling.
