Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Lucky Charms versus Marshmallow Matey's

Over on Bucco Fans Tim Wilson has an interesting analysis of cheap and not cheap relief pitchers. As it appears that the Nats are going to be all over Matt Capps, this is apt to be an important topic for the PBC. If I may summarize Tim's analysis, expensive relief pitchers are a little better than cheap ones, but neither is guaranteed. My guess would be that NH is busy trying to identify major- and minor-league arms that have some shot of success. He won't be shopping for Lucky Charms.

That's not exactly a correct summary of his findings.

He said many of the best relievers did not come cheap, but he didn’t say expensive relievers are better than cheap ones. He made no such claims or even did he attempt to answer that question.

He did say that most of the good relievers were actually cheap relievers, but most of the top echelon of relievers were expensive.

It’s best to read what he actually said, which is a very involved and in depth look at the subject.

It would be good to do another study to answer the question that you want answered – are expensive relievers on the whole better than cheap relievers? In other words, what are the chances if you pay a reliever big bucks that they will perform better than a cheap reliever.

my only

gripe with the study was that he determined whether a reliever was good or not based off their era. It was definitely a good read
