Around SBN: Jeremy Lin And How The Pac-12 Missed Him

What's the word...

On left-handed outfielderJeff Salazar? He's been a longtime favourite of mine (ever since his days in the Colorado Rockies minors) and I haven't heard anything about him lately. I know he had signed a one-year deal with the Pirates, but have they let him go or what? I was really hoping to see Jeff make it with the Pirates and have not been impressed at all with Brandon Moss or Lastings Milledge

I guess you haven't been monitoring much.

He was DFA’d in August. Apparently they weren’t very pleased with his 1-26 performance either. Moss has been a disappointment but to say the Pirates haven’t been impressed at all with Milledge is laughable. I could go into more detail, but that seems like all you’ll need.

In fairnes...

…he didn’t say that the Pirates weren’t impressed with Milledge, just that he himself wasn’t.

Correction

He went 1-23 (.043) plus 3 walks, not 1-26. No need to make him look worse than he actually was.

Haha

Thanks for the correction I saw PA and thought they were AB on his stat line.

He received an outright assignment to AAA Indy on August 21 after clearing waivers...

…and as such, I believe he’s currently a minor league free agent. The Pirates signed a similar player (Jon Van Every) to a minor league deal shortly thereafter, so they may not be planning to bring Salazar back, although that’s just speculation on my part.

I always liked him, too, and I’m sorry that things didn’t work out better for him in Pittsburgh.

On Lastings Milledge

The Pirates and the fans were very pleased with him after he came up late in the season. He proved to be a very fast learner on defense and made some spectacular plays in left field. His power was coming around at the end of the season as well and he generally displayed an attitude that fans love to see from a player. There are many of us that are looking forward to his 2010 and are expecting a breakout year.

Generally true.....

at the end of the season, but the fans, including many on this site, were absolutely ripping Milledge for his “poor performance” when he was initially called up. He struggled roughly his first 15 games and people thought his defense was terrible.

Although an aggregious misuse of UZR

I was also quite upset with Milledge’s defense initially, and I kept a very close eye on his UZR from the time of his call-up.

After about 10 days, his UZR/150 was about -20. As his reads and routes got better, his UZR climbed up to where it currently stands, at +16.

It’s no secret that Milledge has said he had never worked on defense like he worked on it in Pittsburgh. Both the eyes and the numbers showed that he was doing an excellent job improving.

Also, Milledge has to draw walks and find some patience there to really break out offensively.

Thank You All...

Who answered my original question. I knew Jeff had gone back down to Indy but that was the last I knew. I know he finished out the season there. What’s sad is Jeff doesn’t seem to ever get much chances to prove himself in the bigs. He has talent and has shown it…BUT ONLY WHEN HE GETS TO PLAY AND NOT ROT ON THE BENCH!

Milledge did look terrible there for a while. Glad to hear he did improve.
