Royals Sign Steve Lerud
To a minor league deal. Lerud was a third-round pick in 2003 and was a semi-prospect seemingly forever, but he never hit for enough average to be of much use.

Maybe he'll be lucky enough to catch some
Bryan Bullington fastballs at AAA.
Does Bullington get his first career win
with the Royals?
Could be.
Blind pigs and acorns, after all. If Chris George could ride a 7.11 ERA to nine wins for the Royals in 2003, and Jose Lima could turn a 6.99 ERA into five KC wins in 2005, there’s no reason to think BB can’t do something similar this year. All he needs is an opportunity, and in order to get that, all he needs is for some of his teammates to suck their way out of jobs. On the Royals? Seems like safe money…
Come to think of it,
the Winter Meetings can’t start soon enough. At least then we’ll have something legitimate to talk about for a while
And Spring Training can’t come soon enough.
"Spring Training can’t come soon enough."
Dude, can we at least have Christmas, first?

Seeing as how people started putting out all the Christmas regalia and ads and whatnot in mid-October (at least in DC), I feel like I’ve already done Christmas.

Dec. 25 is the best day of the offseason.
Exactly halfway between the last game of the Series and “pitchers and catchers report.”
BTW, I’d take Opening Day now over annoying relatives any day of the week.

I smell what you're cookin' there...
but I still kinda like what family I have left.
My GF’s relatives, however, are a whole ’nother kettle of fish…

That can't be true
If that happened we’d have to have the entire Pirates front office checked for severe concussions.
NONONONONONONONONONONONONO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Boy, that's a terrible idea
I’m taking comfort from the likelihood of it being a creation of the LA media.
It would make a lot of sense for them to try and dump him on anybody, so maybe they have aims of moving him to us for one of our starters. Doesn’t mean we have to play along.
Can't possibly see that happening
We just traded a younger, cheaper version of Pierre in June.
So the Pirates are going to trade for an older, much more expensive version of a guy they just traded, give up a valuable commodity in the bargain, and block the young players they’re banking on? I don’t think so.
I assume some prospects would come to Pittsburgh as well if that became reality. They have some nice stuff in the low minors. Still, I (as well as most other Bucs fans) hate the idea of Pierre being anywhere near the team so that would be a bitter pill to swallow.

Dylan Hernandez of the LA Times says not to put any stock in this report. He says the Pirates aren’t interested in dealing pitching, but I think it’s much more likely that they just weren’t interested in dealing for Pierre.
I Remember Last Year
After the winter meetings, there was a STH meeting with FC and NH, and two somewhat entertaining stories that came out of the discussion.
One was about a rumor that had been picked up (kind of a crazy one like Juan Pierre to the Bucs). When NH asked where that came from (rumor), someone in the room who was on the Pirate staff admitted that they were the one that planted the seed.
The second story was told by FC, who said he was going to the hotel gym (in Las Vegas) at 5 AM to work out. After walking through the smoky casino around a bunch of half drunk gamblers, he found out he couldn’t get into the gym because it was closed. “In that place you could smoke, drink, and gamble, but you couldn’t do anything good for you”.
So this Knobler character explains why the Bucs would have interest in Pierre

The reason, major-league sources said, is what the Pirates might be able to add in a Pierre trade. The team continues to focus on rebuilding and on accumulating prospects, and the thought is that in order to deal Pierre for a starting pitcher (likely Paul Maholm or Zach Duke), the Dodgers would also be willing to include several younger players of value.
Now, I still think Pierre is pointless to have, but hear me out.
The Bucs’ payroll is in the mid-30’s right now, right? So they have room to add payroll if needed. Rather than adding overpriced FAs on their own, maybe it makes sense to use that payroll flexibility to take on a bad contract, and add valuable prospects to the organization.
Now, these would have to be SIGNIFICANT prospects, not of the Hart/Clement variety, but blue-chippers. But it’s an interesting way of looking at adding talent.
And if such a deal were to happen, I would just hope that the Bucs don’t feel the need to start Pierre just because he’d be their highest-paid player. I’m fine with a $10M 4th OF.
I could maybe live with that.
Depending on the return. They gave up Carlos Santana to get the Indians to pick up the rest of Casey Blake’s money – if they paid a similar price here, we might get something pretty tasty.
That would be
a creative approach. I could live with that too.
