Pirates Interested in JJ Putz

Hey I dont know if it has been said on here before, I apologize if it has been, but I read over on MLB Trade Rumors that the Pirates are one of four teams interested in reliever JJ Putz.

I personally think this would be a great low risk signing by the Pirates. The Iwamura trade leaves us a little dry in the bullpen, and MLBTR says that Putz seems to be willing to take a non-closer role. Plus, its not like Capps is guaranteed to return to form. I know last year wasnt too hot for Putz, but I dont think he would look too shabby in a Pirates uniform next year. What do you guys think?

But He is Such a Putz!

I had to say that. But, I agree he would be nice arm in the Bullpen. He would also be good trade bait he did well.

That being said, I think some contender will go after him.

I’m glad you said it before I had to.

He would be nice if...

He returned to pre-2009 form. He so loused things up f/the Mets that a pitchfork and torch-wielding crowd would have run him out of town were they not so tired from chasing other under-performing Mets players. He lost his closing job, then lost the set-up job, then lost even a position in the bullpen. If we can reclaim him and he signs low, wonderful. But this is not your father’s Putz we’re talking about.

I think it's unfair

to compare this Putz to anyone’s father’s Putz.

Free your ass and your mind will follow.

You're right

But he lost his set-up job, then he lost his 7th inning job, then he lost his position in the bullpen. He basically did nothing this year for the Mets.

elbow surgery

This is a little unfair. I think you can blame his performance on injury. Putz had surgery on the elbow in June to remove a bone spur and fragments of bone and was shut down with fraying and a slightly torn ulnar collateral ligament after complaining of soreness before making his first rehab appearance. If you think he is healthy he is a great gamble.

As with a lot of players...

…there are prices and states of health at which it would be a good idea, and prices and states of health at which it would be a bad one. At this point, we don’t know enough to make a reasonable decision.
