Would you trade Zach Duke to LAD for.....

I was seein the rumors today talking about LA Dodgers interest in Zach Duke and the pirates have been linked to Juan Pierre. I do not want Juan Pierre on this team cloggin up the outfield all though hes a good player no need on this team moving forward id rather see Jones handle RF with Clement getting a chance at 1B until Tabata is ready...

But anyways i think Neal and company should move Duke while his value is at it highest do you think the pirates could get a package of 4 prospects back from the Dodgers like a Scott Elbert LHP, Ivan DeJesus SS or Dee Gordon SS, plus others or is that too much for Zach Duke?

It was discussed a bit on the Lerud thread

But it depends on whether the Dodgers would get the Pirates to take on Pierre’s contract, as was rumored. If that’s the case, the Bucs should be able to get a couple of premium prospects in return for taking Pierre’s contract off of LA’s hands.

depends

on whether you are saying 4 prospects or “premium” prospects. I think 4 prospects should be achievable- I don’t know however, if anyone would be willing to give up 2 “premium” prospects…

by BurgherKing on Dec 8, 2009 1:45 PM EST up reply actions

it also depends on how broke the dodgers really are. reports say they’ve got nothing to spend. if ditching pierre’s contract allows them acquire some other players they wouldn’t have been able to before, then it’s worth a lot to them – maybe even 2 premium prospects. seems to me like the most valuable quantity this offseason is payroll space.

by johnnycuff on Dec 8, 2009 2:04 PM EST up reply actions

Well, he said Gordon, DeJesus, and Elbert

Gordon’s pretty clearly a premium guy, and the other two aren’t exactly chopped liver, either.

by Vlad on Dec 8, 2009 2:24 PM EST up reply actions

That's what I'm saying

The post says Elbert, De Jesus, or Gordon.

by biggyv on Dec 8, 2009 2:25 PM EST up reply actions

I’d take any number of actual premium prospects for a good but non-premium player like Duke…

by Adam Reynolds on Dec 8, 2009 2:52 PM EST up reply actions

Well, the OP seems to have said four prospects, one of which is Gordon, DeJesus or Elbert, which doesn’t seem to unreasonable to me. It all comes down to how much the Dodgers want to dump Pierre’s contract.

by biggyv on Dec 8, 2009 2:11 PM EST up reply actions

for those familiar with the Dodgers system

Who do you like the most? (btw, this is just for info, I honestly doubt the Pierre+prospects for Duke gets done)

I looked around some, and it seems Ethan Martin, James McDonald, Ivan DeJesus rank near the top in most. Scott Elbert seems ok, but I don’t like the idea of trading for a minor league reliever( except as a throw in)

by BurgherKing on Dec 8, 2009 1:51 PM EST reply actions

Elbert can start.

He was relieving this year in large part because of innings restrictions due to past injuries, but if we added him, he’d start for us.

by Vlad on Dec 8, 2009 2:26 PM EST up reply actions

you're right

I must have been looking at something else (maybe confused with Schlereth) when I thought I checked his minor league pitching and didn’t see GS as any significant number.

by BurgherKing on Dec 8, 2009 2:39 PM EST up reply actions

Low counting totals in-season...

…due to injuries. Easy to miss at a glance, if you don’t know.

by Vlad on Dec 8, 2009 3:32 PM EST up reply actions

not really

of the number of games he played, he did start enough!

slip of mind!

by BurgherKing on Dec 8, 2009 3:41 PM EST up reply actions

BA had Gordon as their #1

He’s got the highest ceiling, but is at least a couple years away from the majors.

by Vlad on Dec 8, 2009 2:28 PM EST up reply actions

Seems like a speed guy...

We need some power.

He is only 150 lbs…someone show him the HGH.

WE ARE.......PENN STATE!

by Nick7 on Dec 8, 2009 2:52 PM EST up reply actions

He's got decent power potential for a MIF.

The ISO should increase as he grows into his body. He’s already got a line drive bat – just needs more strength.

Not sure why people are so myopically fixed on power (by which they probably mean HR, anyway). Runs are runs. If Gordon never hits more than 15 HR in a season, but he’s a 5+ win player on the strength of his contact, baserunning, and defense, then he’s still putting five wins’ worth of runs on the board.

by Vlad on Dec 8, 2009 3:37 PM EST up reply actions

Honestly...

…how much power do you expect from a 21-year-old shortstop in A-ball?

by Vlad on Dec 8, 2009 3:38 PM EST up reply actions

30 HR, Vlad, and not one less.

Given Toronto's reported interest in Doumit...

…and our reported willingness to take Pierre’s deal if we get a sufficient return in other players, I’m starting to wonder whether we’re involved in the larger Blue Jays-Dodgers negotiations over Halladay. If Toronto likes Doumit, maybe the Dodgers would pick him up in order to spin him off to the Blue Jays in a Halladay package. And trading Pierre plus stuff for Duke or Maholm would free up payroll room for Halladay while covering for the loss of a guy like Billingsley or Kershaw as the main player in a Halladay offer.

Making all those moves would pretty much burn LA’s farm system to the ground, but maybe Colletti’d do it anyway. He’s not exactly the personification of good judgment.

by Vlad on Dec 9, 2009 9:26 AM EST reply actions

i like it in theory

coletti is perpetually in win-now mode and we’re no doubt familiar with LA’s system, but the bigger a deal is, the more unlikely it is and this one is huge. but seeing as we’re just thowing shit at the wall, i guess it could go down something like this:

LA – halladay
TOR – kershaw, 2 prospects from LA, doumit, duke
PIT – pierre (plus his salary), 2 prospects from LA, 2 from TOR

my guess is we’d want to receive a starter back from someone, either one of toronto’s lesser starters or maybe james mcdonald from LA, who we’ve been after before.

just my armchair analysis. thoughts?

by johnnycuff on Dec 9, 2009 11:32 AM EST up reply actions

Doesn’t sound good enough from the Pirates’ perspective. We would have to then eat much of Pierre’s contract to flip him to someone else.

by MarkInDallas on Dec 9, 2009 6:16 PM EST up reply actions

Depends which prospects we get.

When you say “4 prospects”, that could be a great deal, or a terrible one.

by Vlad on Dec 9, 2009 6:32 PM EST up reply actions

No Pierre for Me!

I don’t want him at any price! We had him before in the form of Nyger Morgan. We go guys who can play better than him.

So, no way Jose!

by zogger on Dec 9, 2009 12:06 PM EST reply actions

How about this theory?

NYY – halladay
TOR – prospect from NYY, melky, doumit, duke
PIT – Austin Romine, 1 good prospect from NYY, 1 scrub prospect from NYY, 2 premium prospects from TOR

by Pinstripe Pirate on Dec 9, 2009 9:53 PM EST reply actions

toronto wont take it

no way they give up halladay plus 2 premium prospects for doumit, duke, melky, and NY prospect!

by BurgherKing on Dec 9, 2009 10:26 PM EST up reply actions

Doesn't work.

We’re getting too many prospects, Toronto gets shafted on value, and the Dodgers can’t clear payroll for Halladay without moving Pierre.
