I don't like this much.

I liked Diaz as a backup, and wish he wasn't released, esp with the Bucs apparently fairly keen on shopping Doumit. It's probably right that we couldn't have traded him for much, but he has value at the ML level.

Good luck to him.

I don’t think this is a crippling loss, though.

it isn't

depending on how hard we are shopping doumit, i think Diaz would be a better option than some of he options we’d have to pick up!

I don’t think Diaz is any better than Kratz…certainly no reason to think that he’s a superior hitter. Don’t know about Kratz’s defense, but Diaz was not a defensive wizard either.

By rep, Kratz is pretty solid with the glove.

Fingers crossed that his ...

… departure foretells a rabid advancement for what’s-his-name, the catcher we drafted last year. If we have a capable back-up to Doumit (and then what’s his name) in Jaramillo, and a serviceable 3rd string catcher in Kratz, why fill the roster w/another serviceable 3rd string catcher?

In case anyone's curious...

…Diaz’s signing was announced as a minor-league deal with a NRI.

That should probably tell everyone why the Pirates couldn’t trade him at all. Why would someone want to be stuck with him on the 25 man when you don’t even have to put him on the 40 man unless he earns an MLB job?
