Report From Bradenton - Last Day

Got to Pirate City early and saw Maholm and Dumatrait throw (~ 8:30 AM).  Maholm looked very sharp, with Kerrigan telling him which pitch to throw where, and the catcher moving the 4" strip where Kerrigan ordered; the helper moving the plastic batter close to and away from the plate.  Based on what I've seen, I'd be surprised if Maholm does not have another good year.  Dumatrait just threw fastballs, I'd guess at about 75%.  Decent command, nothing fantastic, good beginning.

For the most part watched the hitting, and one of the most impressive that I saw was Jose Tabata, who hit a couple out to left and hit line drives on nearly every pitch.  Nyjer Morgan was making little sounds mimicking the ball of Tabata's bat and yelling Ta-bat-A. Also remained impressed with Robinson Diaz, Brandon Moss, Garrett Jones, and Pedro.  Least impressive was Andrew McCutchen, Jarimillo, and Anderson Machado.  I know Tabata and Diaz played winter ball and may be ahead as a result of that, but I just do not see Jarimillo making this team based on what I've seen in 5 days.  May be completely wrong...

Watched Evan Meek throw his side and his slider was just awesome. I've never seen a pitch move like that (late quick movement, almost seemed like an optical illusion) and his command was also very good.  Most impressive side I have seen all week by far.  If he can keep that, he is a lock to make the team, make Yates expendable, and be the set up guy (closer if Capps has any problems).

Golf tournament pulled some away a little early.  Maz on site but not visable for the most part.  Manny Sanguillen always a joy, Bill Virdon is a trooper who loves the game. Most players very friendly and willing to sign autographs.

A great week for a baseball fan...

Now back to the real world...
