Orioles Get Rich Hill
For a player to be named! Wow. Clearly the Orioles have some sort of secret deal whereby Jim Hendry has to give the O's any talented player who disappoints him for one second, but it's too bad the Pirates couldn't get in on this action. Hill completely fell apart in 2008, but he was downright good in 2007, and he still has that devastating curveball. Of course it's possible the PTBNL will be someone interesting, but I doubt it.

agreed
i was hoping to see us swoop in on this deal. hill is out of options so he’d have to make the team out of spring training or clear waivers, but he’s the kind of gamble i’d like to see us take.

I wanted the Pirates to get him
But I’ll bet the Cubs preferred to see him out of the NL. So, let’ see, the Cubs have Heilman and a PTBNL for Pie, Hill and Cedeno. Is that right?

Unless the PTBNL is a good one, that’s a very weak return.

I read somewhere last week that the PTBNL would be determined based on performance in some way, shape or form. Orioles pony up if Hill works out, and don’t if he truly can’t find the strike zone anymore. Sorry, no link.
Fair risk to take, I guess, but:
A. What are the chances Hill turns things around? His case of the yips seems severe (almost as many walks as strikeouts in 2008).
B. Don’t we already have a number of pitchers to audition that are fairly similar? Hill may have more upside, but he’d cost something, too.

Most of our wild throwers are relievers.
As such, they definitionally don’t have the upside of a mid-rotation starter.

Sorry, should've been more clear...
Not similar as in “can’t find the strike zone,” but similar as in “might be able to be a decent starter, but probably won’t be.”
I’m thinking Karstens, Barthmaier, Ohlendorf, Dumatrait, Vasquez, McCutchen, etc.
Why give up something for Hill when you already don’t have enough innings to go around? Especially when that “something” ends up being significant, if Hill is to work out his control issues.

Looks like Ollie is staying in NY...

It’s all about Andy MacPhail running the Orioles. He’s got a real fascination with guys the Cubs have given up on, I suspect because he drafted most (all) of them.
"I was trying to rob him. And he took my gun from me. And the gun was full of blanks. And he shot a blank into my eye. And now I cannot see from this eye ever again, the doctors say."
