Andy Marte?

I saw that the Indians placed one-time blue chip prospect Andy Marte on waivers to make room for Salas from the Rays.  Marte is still only 25 and I think he's the kind of player the Pirates need to be looking for.  I don't know if he's still got the tools to be an impact player at the Major League level, but NH has to know better than anyone.  Do you think there's any way Marte ends up with the Bucs?

On 25 man?

On the major league roster I think it’d be tough. Even fitting him in the right level in the minors might be tough unless you really think that he’s more promising than Neil Walker at this point, which I’m not too sure about.

I believe that if they were to pick him up on waivers he’d have to stay on the 25 man roster, in which case I don’t know where he fits in.

It’s tempting, but I’m just not sure he’s necessarily better than the people we have now (unless this Andy LaRoche stuff really doesn’t work out).

Personally, I'm suspicious of him.

2005 was an awful long time ago. But I guess there’s always a chance, if the scouts see something they like.

Ask an Indians fan

But I suppose he was out of options and they were determined to see if he could stick in the majors, so he could possibly come around in AAA….but ask and Indians fan and duck.

Marte

Yeah, he’s definitely out of options. They wanted him to be the everyday third basemen last year but that’s kinda hard when you pull off .221/.268/.315 on a team that went to the ALCS the year before.

As a Pirates/Indians combination fan I thought the Bucs should take a shot on him at first, but the more I think about it the more I think it’s not a good idea. We already have one “this guy is suppose to be good in the majors so we have to give him playing time now” third baseman to worry about.

why not?

I guess they’ve got nothing to lose. But yeah, it’s been quite awhile since he’s been a blue chipper. I wonder what happened…

Apparently no one thought he was worth a roster spot...

He cleared waivers today and is back in the Indians AAA.
