Jason Bay playing out his option?

ESPN reports that Bay and Red Sox have ceased negotiations on a contract extension.  Bay is a free agent after this year.

Bay said:  "You play for six years and you earn the right to be a free agent, and you don't want to sell yourself short.  That doesn't mean that there doesn't have to be some concessions. But you put yourself in this position, and I think it's in my best interest to kind of explore."

If Luigi's spring training stats are not a mirage, with Tabata crushing the ball, at least some of the pitchers coming through (Mr. Wonderful?), and with Nady maybe just a bench player for the Yankees this year, Huntington's July '08 trades are looking better and better for the PBC.

Just can't spell "Ohlendorf"

I don’t think I’m the only one who has nicknamed him after WWE Hall of Fame wrestler, Paul Orndorff, aka Mr. Wonderful.

Mr. Wonderful looks like he’s doing the best in spring training of the pitchers Huntington brought aboard last July. Hansen had looked good before blowing up in his last appearance, Karstens has had one bad appearance (but looked good in his last game), and Dan McCutchen has been up and down. I haven’t heard anything about Bryan Morris this spring — toe maybe still hurting?

Ahh Thanks

yea, I like it. He’s looked good. I’m pumped to watch tonight’s game.

I know what you're saying, but I doubt Boston has any real regrets

They only gave up Hanson and Moss, two guys who probably didn’t figure in their future, or in Hanson’s case, they were will to risk letting a possibly good reliever get away to make the deal. Bay was great for them and there’s this year yet to go.

3 way trade

You obviously have to mention Manny. Anyone who went from Boston to Pitt was an after thought to the Sox and Dodgers

That said he needed to go, they got Bay who’s played great, and we got guys with upside, hopefully in the near future.

Luigi = LaRoche? I gotta get up to speed on these names

What I meant.

I didn’t think I needed to mention Manny because they got Bay. What I’m saying is that Boston gave up Moss and Hanson for the privilege of getting Bay and getting rid of Manny. Moss and Hanson were the price of doing business.

Not only did Boston give up Manny

They paid his entire $20M 2008 salary — Dodgers paid him nothing last year. That’s a lot to give up for 1 year and 2 months of Bay.

Not that Boston doesn’t have the change to keep him if they want to — it’s just that it’s clear that Marte, Bay and Nady all would not be Bucs after 2009 (or 2008 for Marte). So it’s looking more and more clear that Huntington traded them at the top of their market.

Mario = Adam LaRoche
Luigi = Andy LaRoche

Charlie, maybe you could post a list of approved nicknames?

If Nyjer makes the team (and god knows he shouldn’t by any metric that exists), I’d like to call him “Morgan le feh”.

That’s a funny idea. And it could be helpful, too. I’ll get to work on that.

I’ve always liked “The Trouth” and I think it’s even funnier when you rhyme it with the correct pronunciation.

Also, I noticed last night, Nate looks exactly like the oldest brother from Home Improvement. I knew he looked familiar

What did you expect?

Why wouldn’t Boston let Bay become a free agent? Based on what happened to FAs over this offseason, Boston can potentially save alot of $s by letting Bay test the water and then re-signing him (or an equivalent player) for much less. Until the whole FA market (not just the top 5) heats up again, I see alot of teams doing the same.

As for the Bucs signing Bay, not sure why we would do it. We have a bunch of young OFs who we want to give playing time. Bay, while a nice player, would not fit into our plans.

The downside for Boston:

The economy might not be as God-awful next offseason as it was this year. And there won’t be quite as big a logjam of LF bats. If you want a corner OF next offseason, you’re talking about Holliday, Bay, Dye, Damon, or Matsui. Decent talent pool, but not an out-and-out logjam.
