Pirates pursuing Jeff Baker?
From the latest Rosenthal :
The Rockies often are criticized by rival executives for asking too much for their players in trades, but they figure to make a move with with utility man Jeff Baker, who is out of minor-league options and drawing interest from the Phillies, Astros and Pirates.
Baker is a 28-year-old right-handed batter (stats here ). He has experience at 1B, 2B, 3B, and corner outfield, but is a below-average defender pretty much everywhere. He does have legitimate power, and would probably be good for a .750-ish OPS as a regular for us, and thus a significant upgrade on either Nyjer or Monroe in LF (or a decent temp in RF if Moss's thumb injury persists). Baker carries a salary of $415k, comes into the year with just over two seasons of ML service time, and is represented by Scott Boras (and as such may not be in the team's long-term plans). Colorado is probably shopping him in order to create a roster spot for Ian Stewart, who had a nice debut in 2007 and has looked good in spring training.
Rosenthal mentions Kyle Kendrick as a possible return for Baker from the Phillies. Given Kendrick's general scrubbiness, you'd tend to think that we could match that offer, if we wanted. The Astros desperately need a 3B with Aaron Boone out of the picture after heart surgery. They have little of value to trade in return, however, so they may not be particularly serious competition for us. Alternately, they may decide to drastically overpay for Baker (Towles? Bogusevic?), out of perceived need, as Drayton McLane reportedly has unrealistic expectations of contention in 2009.
What do you think? Is Baker someone worth picking up? Or should we look for free help on the waiver wire, or hold our collective nose and stick with what we've got?
Update (3/25) : The Pirates had two scouts at Denver's game yesterday, though Baker did not play (Denver Post ).

Pass
His home/road OPS splits are .896/.633. I’ll take my chances with someone on the waiver wire.

Colorado home/road splits don't work that way.
You may want to read this post for a description of some of the flaws in that approach.

interesting post. i didn’t realize home/road splits were so inconsistent year to year. they, and oakland’s park factors, were the main reason i avoided matt holliday in the Bucs Dugout fantasy league. I guess that baker doesn’t have enough data (500+ total ABs) to really rely on the home/road splits. it sounds like you need several years of data to see a meaningful pattern, but it does seem that some small subset of players actually do have a significant pattern of high home/road splits. thanks for the link.

If we replaced Morgan with Baker, who would replace Morgan’s stolen base numbers?

We could just have McLouth indiscriminately attempt to steal every time he gets on base. :)

Not a bad idea.
That way, we’d cover most of Morgan’s CSes, too.

Whew, problem solved. Vlad, do you have JR’s email?

Very funny.
I think anyone could replace Morgan’s 3 SB this spring, if they are allowed to have the 3 CS he has this spring (one pickoff from 1B and 2 CS trying to steal 3B). Scary good, huh? :)
But I’d rather see PBC send Morgan down (of course) and go with Hinske & Salazar. If Moss can’t go then some combination of Monroe and Jones can fit in too at the corners. Salazar and Phillips (if he makes the team) can back up in CF.
Baker doesn’t seem an improvement over the next 3-6 months, and at that point A-Cutch and Tabata get back into the conversation, and maybe even Pearce?
P.S. Even Pearce got a SB yesterday. I thought that was an “I’ll show you Huntington” move on his part.

aaaaaAAAAAHHHH YES!!!! Mr. Excitement!
What YOU PEOPLE fail to understand is that is that it’s the attempt to steal that brings excitement to a baseball game. Being safe or out is irrelevant. When a runner goes, everybody’s eyes widen, the race is on!

Joe Morgan says...
that when his nephew, Nyjer, attempts to steal second, Nyjer’s attempt will generate home runs later in the inning. Manufacture runs!

sounds familiar
“The Rockies often are criticized by rival executives for asking too much for their players in trades.”
Rosenthal wrote this about Huntington before the Nady and Bay trades. “Real” baseball really does mirror rotisserie.

Vlad...
Baker seems like just another untility-type guy;not much different than what’s on the roster already. If he could be obtained without giving up a real prospect,ok I guess, but certainly no difference maker. Might as well stick with what’s already there.

Baker
Exactly the kind of move this team does not need to make. Cruz would be better defensively or wait for Phillips to get healthy. Lets give Nyjer a shot before trading pitching for another journeyman.
by Thump on Mar 24, 2009 6:28 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Of course Crus is a better defender.
He’s a glove-first shortstop, while Baker is a corner player who can fake it at second. They wouldn’t be filling the same kind of role.

That's pretty harsh
If there were no cost, certainly we’d all enjoy Baker over Monroe, assuming Monroe gets the last bench spot. I, for one (probably the only one) would gladly trade Karstens for Baker. But pick a not-too-old reliever at Indy. I’d hate to lose Romulo!, who will certainly have a blog named after him one day, but him or someone like him. Don’t really know what COL would be looking for.

My initial thoughts...
…given their supposed interest in Kyle Kendrick, were Karstens or Duke, in that those are the two most-similar pitchers on our staff. Karstens is a righty, though, and Duke is more expensive than Kendrick.
Who knows?

Get Serious!
We are talking about Jeff Baker!!!
What possible value could he ever have for the Pirates that they would ever think of giving up anyone decent?
by thegunner on Mar 25, 2009 11:20 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
He'd essentially be a cheap, right-handed Hinske.
Which has at least a little value, whether it’s something we should be buying or not.

dont argue with the gunner
he always is trying to argue over stuff hes wrong over. gunner please give me a reason we shouldnt try to acquire jeff baker? please name one.

Who Does Baker Replace On The 25 Man Roster?
Baker is strictly a utility man. He is out of options and the Rockies are hoping to get something for him rather than put him on waivers. Whom does he replace on the roster? Vasquez – no. Hinske – no. Does he have any real ‘pop’ – no. He is extraneous.
by thegunner on Mar 25, 2009 5:13 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
He'd be a reserve OF.
Probably in the spot they’d been holding for Monroe.
He has decent pop. Career .468 SLG, which is solid even after you correct for Coors. And unlike Monroe, he can actually add some value in other, non-power ways: Fielding multiple positions, running, hitting for average, etc.
by Vlad on Mar 25, 2009 5:34 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
He's got good pop
Just maddeningly streaky. 2HR today.

So this is sounding like a 'no'
Hey, just came over from the Purple Row. I’ve always liked Baker but there is just no where to put him now. We have a logjam going on on both infield and outfield corners, and a lot of how it plays out depends on how healthy Todd Helton’s back is.
I’d like to see Bakes end up somewhere he can play everyday. As for what we’d need, Kendrick from the Phillies is being tossed around but it’s hard to get excited about a back of the rotation guy. How about a solid arm from the pen?

has the ticket. Romulo would be a fine addition to anyone’s pen.

It's pretty awesome...
Did you guys have any specific players in mind from our end of things?
by Vlad on Mar 25, 2009 4:32 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Who did the inside the park?
For Romulo to do it at a svelte 260, the ball must have bounced around like a pinball.
(Sorry, couldn’t resist.)
by BlassBalls on Mar 25, 2009 4:35 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Baker did it. Ball hit Torrii Hunter in the face and he went down
No real specific players in mind. Just reading the Denver paper reporter’s blog it sounds like Pirates, Astros, or Phillies were likely partners and the Braves and Yankees possible but less likely. No names mentioned other than Kendrick.
I suggested Baker for Joba, straight up. We’ll see if it takes.

Eh, Not Right Now
Hes a decent player, not much upside so he wouldn’t fit too well in Pittsburgh right now. Even though he has more upside that Monroe, I think Morgan could turn out more valuable in the future. Save the players for next year. Stephen Pearce is good enough to back up.
by dsavavge04 on Mar 25, 2009 10:34 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Jeff Baker would seem to be an upgrade
on Craig Monroe in the OF, Andy Phillips has injury concerns, Luis Cruz excites no one, and Mr. Excitement in left on a regular basis is truly depressing.
As Vlad points out, a “cheap, right-handed hitting Hinske” would help us put a little more bearable OF out there with McClouth, Moss, and Hinske-with A McCutchen waiting in the wings.
It’s a long season. I’m hoping that GM Huntington can tweak the roster before spring training wraps up to give us a slightly better team to watch.
