Tigers to Keep Thames; Release Sheffield

http://pittsburgh.pirates.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090331&content_id=4093976&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb

Well that takes Marcus Thames off the list of our possible acquisitions. I think this is a surprising move by the Tigers, given that they owe Sheff 14 million dollars this year and he will make that playing elsewhere. I wouldn't mind seeing the Pirates maybe take a look at Sheff, who says he can still play well as an outfielder. He would be extremely cheap and with 499 career home runs, exciting. What do you guys think?

$$$ how much though...

i would go for it. A year with a potential HOFer would as always talked about help with bringing some of the younger players up to “speed” quicker.

i think it will never happen. why would sheff want to come play for the pirates??? there is aboslutly no reason, he would much rather retire. He will sign on a team that has world series hopes, not .500 hopes

not for us

his knees are in terrible shape so he’d only be viable at 1b and even then would be a huge injury risk. he may be able to DH somewhere but i don’t think he could sign with an NL team.

Getting him would do nothing.

I say no because we are going to be a 70 win team with or without him, and we won’t keep him around for more than one year anyway. Don’t waste the money. If we were good and had a shot at a playoff run, I’d say yeah, but this would be a bad move for the Pirates.

Willy Mo

Pena just got released by the Nats. I’d say he’d be a more realistic and cheaper option then Sheffy.

I don't actually know that this would kill the Thames thing.

They still have Raburn at AAA, after all. He doesn’t have Thames’s power, but he’d be a respectable option (his struggles last year notwithstanding).

Raburn

Raburn is def a prospect the Tigers would like to see up in the Bigs this year. I dont think Thames is going anywhere now that Sheff is gone, but your right that is a very legit possibility. I would like to see the Pirates make a move for Wily Mo, I would even like to see him play everyday.

Detroit is apparently...

…trying to put together a trade that’d send Raburn to the Cardinals (Link).

hmm

So Thames will be there next year. I think we need to bring someone in. This roster is just not stable enough. It isnt. There are options on the market that would be cheap. McPherson (MAYBE), but I really do think Wily Mo would be a rock solid option. Doesnt anyone agree??
