Jarek Cunningham Tears ACL, Out for Season
Well, this stinks. Jarek Cunningham, who had easily the most impressive pro debut of any member of the 2008 draft class last year, has torn his ACL and will miss the entire season.
The good news, such as it is, is that tearing one's ACL isn't like a pitcher blowing his elbow out or something. That is, it doesn't seem to have drastic long-term effects and probably won't change the way he needs to approach the game. He'll be back at full strength within six months or so. It just means he'll miss the season, which certainly will affect his development, but it could be worse.

Bad news about Cunningham.
Dejan quotes Kyle Stark as likening the injury lay-off to being redshirted in college for a season. Doesn’t seem quite as bad when you think along those lines but don’t players still develop through practice when redshirted?
Here’s a nice piece at espn.com on another young Pirates short stop.

Also Not Good
If I recall correctly he blew out a knee his senior year of high school too, thats why he fell in the draft. So he has either blown out both knees in a 3 year period or the same knee twice in 3 years, I don’t know which would be better but not good either way. I thought this kid showed a lot of promise, he had a good showing las year, I hope it doesn’t bother him long term, he’s still only 19 I think.
Think it's the same knee.
And it’s not quite as bad as two in three years on that knee – he never had surgery the first time he tore it, because the ligament spontaneously reattached itself (rare, but it does happen). As such, this is only his first reconstruction, even though it’s his second injury.
Still quite disappointing, though. I also think Dejan buried the lede a bit by mentioning that the team had been planning on moving him to 2B. If he stays at SS when he comes back next year, maybe this will have been a blessing in disguise.
