Craig Monroe Makes Team

Craig Monroe will make the 25-man roster. To clear room for him, Romulo! has been designated for assignment. Unless there are further moves, the team is basically set, except that one of Evan Meek, Craig Hansen, Sean Burnett, Jesse Chavez and Donnie Veal will not make the team. Meek, who has bronchitis, could be placed on the DL. In any case, Hansen, Burnett and Veal can't be sent to the minors without the Pirates risking losing them, so my guess is that they're in. As WTM suggests below, four of these five plus Matt Capps, Tyler Yates and John Grabow could be a catastrophically awful bullpen if further moves aren't made.

As for Monroe, I'd still like to see the Pirates make some kind of move to replace him; he's been declining for years and was never very good to begin with.

Don’t feel like starting a separate thread for this . . .

The Pirates just released a bunch of minor leaguers and also signed two RHPs—Harvey Garcia and Mitchell Fienemann. Garcia struck out a lot of guys in the minors and appeared in 8 games for the Marlins in 2007, but missed all of 2008. Fienemann is Australian. I’ve found some mentions of him in Aussie leagues, athough not much detail yet. He appears to be 18 or, at most 19. The PIrates just hired a scout in Australia and this is probably his first signing. Hopefully, the guy is an actual prospect.
