Dodgers Designate Delwyn Young for Assignment
Los Angeles has designated outfielder Delwyn Young for assignment, so the Dodgers have ten days to trade, release or waive him. If reports from a variety of sources are accurate, Neal Huntington has a minor obsession with Young, so expect him to be on the phone with the Dodgers in the next week or so. It's unclear to me why the Pirates seem to like Young so much; they have plenty of outfielders, and Young's not nearly good enough to move other players around for. Here are Young's career stats.

pitched a scoreless inning of relief today…maybe we should trade for him, too.

The Pride of Parkersburg, West Virginia!
He can switch hit.
I guess that’s a bit useful. The bat probably won’t translate that well, though, and he’s not going to be winning any awards with the glove.
Great... another 100 K guy
Thats what we really need, another guy who strikes out far too much. We already have a bunch of those guys.
i think id like it
hes a good player. i think hell be a productive pro, but we really dont need outfielders and if it takes a good pitcher to get him then i say dont do it.
I GOT MY STREET BUZZ BEFORE I GOT MY PEACH FUZZ
Were Jim Bowden still in Washington...
I gotta think the Nats would grab him…While Young didnt have any history with Cinncinati, Bowden seemed to love stockpiling outfielders much like NH waxes over hard throwing, no control relievers.
That's Just One Of The Reasons...
why Bowden is out of Washington!
If we acquired him, he’d likely replace Craig Monroe. That should give an idea how much we should be willing to pay for him. He’s younger, I’m not sure if he’s really any better. Probably better defensively…
I don't see him as any better.
Though if he did surprise and perform well, he’d be under team control at a minimum salary for several years. Monroe’s a FA after 2009, regardless of how he does.
Meh
like one other person said about 100 strikeouts or more for a full season and he will probably over his career hit about 15-20 HR per season. Noticeably he has a drop between the minor and major leagues in stats……perhaps a tweener ..(AAAA)? One of those guys that has great minor league numbers, but never translates well to majors?
It's park effects.
If you look at his minor league record, the big raw stat line on there is in Las Vegas at the age of 25 (plus 49 killer AB at the same level the next year). Vegas is a great hitter’s park, and while 25 isn’t exactly old for the level, it’s right on the edge.
If you consider context, the best season on his record is actually 2004. The FSL is death on power, so 61 XBH there indicates pretty good power potential. Unfortunately, anything that happened five years ago has relatively little predictive value for his 2009 line.
It’s instructive to compare little LaRoche’s minor league numbers with Young’s. As good as Young’s FSL turn was, LaRoche’s in 2005 was even better: 36 XBH in only 249 AB, with LaRoche also being a year younger than Young at the time. And while he gets the same kind of boost to his raw stat line from Vegas that Young does, there’s a huge difference between a .900+ OPS there at 22 and the same line there at 24 or 25.
hi, Dodgers fan here.
PeeWee’s a pretty good offensive player, but there’s some obvious flaws here.
Defensively, he’s rough, and the Dodgers didn’t trust him to play defense all that much. He was used primarily as a pinch hitter, a role that he excelled at as he had a OBP of around .375. He’s likely not good enough to start as an outfielder, and his only infielder position was at 2nd base, and Young also went arm surgery in the off season.
Although if I was targeting an Dodgers outfielder, I’d look at Xavier Paul, who is currently playing for the Triple-A affiliate. Might only be a 4th outfielder, but he can hit, and can field all three outfield positions.
