Alvarez hits walk-off HR!
Pedro Alvarez, the Pirates' prized prospect and No. 1 draft pick in 2008, hit a walk-off HR in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Hillcats over the Winston-Salem Dash on Thursday night. He snapped a 0-for-18 skid on Wednesday night with a hit and then promptly went 2-for-4 on Thursday night with a 2-RBI single in addition to the walk-off bomb. In all, he had six RBI's on Thursday night. This guy's legendary status is continuing to grow and grow, and Pirate fans are drooling over this guy. I really believe he will be the closest thing that baseball has seen to Albert Pujols in a while when he finally does make it to the majors. This kid has it all. Warning to Andy LaRoche: You better start hitting because the experiment may be over before it even got started. Here's another interesting tidbit: I was watching the Pirates' 2009 preview on ESPN.com and Buster Olney was talking about the Pirates. This came out of his mouth: Pedro Alvarez will be in Pittsburgh sometime in 2009. Look, I don't know where he got his information (he didn't say in the piece I watched), but if anybody has the inside scoop, Buster Olney does. Very interesting, and I wish they would bring him up right now (haha, not really but...).

No. 2 draft pick
When we hit you, you don't get up. When you hit us, we get up laughing.

No. 1 as in
I believe he meant No. 1 as in “Pirates first round pick”. I’m pretty sure everyone knows he was No. 2 overall.
I’d imagine that Olney wasn’t giving inside information but instead giving his projection.
Olney
No offense to Olney, but since when has he ever been knowledgeable about the inner workings of the Pirates (or any team not in NY, Boston, or LA)? My prediction is that Alvarez will be up in 2010, most likely a month or two after that season begins (Wieters being the blueprint). I think my prediction is based on as much “knowledge” as Buster’s.
Good news on Brad Lincoln, too
He gave up 0 ER’s on 5 hits, 0 BB, 6K in 5 IP last night
Somehow he still got the loss despite not giving up a run. Jamie Romak should get the loss.
charity standing orders
Pedro Alvarez probably WILL be in Pittsburgh at some point in 2009.
I just don’t think it’ll be as a member of the PIrates, during a game.
