Ryan Doumit to Have Surgery, Miss Two Months
Well, this is awful. The Pirates will be replacing one of their best hitters with Jason Jaramillo until late June or so.
Robinzon Diaz, unsurprisingly, will take Doumit's place on the roster. As I've said before, Diaz is basically Jaramillo but he's a righty and he's a little bit worse at everything. Look for him to pick up some at bats against lefties.

Diaz
Actually, i think Diaz is better then Jaramillo, at least with the bat. Let him start and see what he can do.

This
is the second to last player on the roster we could afford to get injured.
Damn.

How did this happen?
He didn’t get hit with a pitch, and he wasn’t catching when it happened.
DK wrote earlier this week:
Doumit first felt the pain with a swing in his second at-bat against the Atlanta Braves on Sunday afternoon, when he grounded out to second base.
Scaphoid bones just don’t fall apart. One medical site I saw said:
The primary mechanism of injury is a fall on the outstretched hand with an extended, radially deviated wrist, which results in extreme dorsiflexion at the wrist and compression to the radial side of the hand. Forces are transmitted from the hand proximally to the arm through the scaphoid.
The ball hitting the bat is not the equivalent of a grown man falling on his hand. The same medical site said for most fractures you just put it in a “thumb spica cast” (a plaster cast over the thumb and forearm) for a couple weeks. Surgery is only advisable when it’s an “acute fracture” of the scaphoid. So does Doumit just have really brittle bones?
Bow I become a big Jason Jaramillo fan! I trust that no matter what kind of start Jaramillo gets off to, nobody on this site will start posting how much they miss Ronny Ballgame? :)

reason for surgery
I’m not an orthopedic surgeon, but my understanding is that athletes commonly get surgery (usually with pins or screws) to speed up the healing process. a cast would certainly work on a minimally displaced fracture, but hardware would probably better “set” the bone and allow faster healing of the fracture. of course, you’d probably want to remove the hardware at some point, which would require a second surgery, but maybe that can be delayed until November.
regarding brittle bones, I have no idea, but I’d like to see footage of that at-bat. (does anyone know if he fouled off a pitch near the hands in that at-bat?)
and finally, regarding Ronnie Ballgame, I don’t wish him ill, but I have no qualms at all that he’s in the other dugout tonight. good riddance to lazy rubbish.

From what I just quickly read...
…it sounds like the bone’s poor blood flow sometimes makes injuries of this kind tough to heal. They may have operated in order to try and minimize the chance of it becoming a lingering issue.
If he got a screw or a pin, it’s probably permanent.

Wait for the gamethread tomorrow, when Paulino will probably be starting.

People sometimes break their scaphoid without knowing it.
Maybe he cracked it earlier, and it didn’t hurt until the swing in question?

I remember Doumit
taking a heck of a foul tip off that area about a week ago. I want to say it was the last game of the Reds series. Maybe that could have been the start of it…and the awkward swing finished it.

Not a big suprise
Doumit has always been fragile. He just is. He has yet to play a full season and its not like he is young in baseball years. We need some kind of catching prospect big time. How about a LaRoche trade for a catching prospects?
by vanslyke on Apr 21, 2009 4:30 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Unless you are going to make a trade...
with the Rangers…you probably aren’t going to see anyone willing to give up a catching prospect. And I don’t think the Rangers are really looking for a 1B. Although, from the reports I’ve seen, Saltalamacchia and Teagarden are supposed to be pretty good with the stick.

I’d just stick out the next two months with Jaramillo and Diaz.

How good is Steve Lerud?
A prospect or a suspect?
Does it mean anything that he was put on the 40 man roster last winter?
by WstCstBucco on Apr 21, 2009 4:47 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Fairly marginal prospect.
And nowhere near ML-ready. He was probably rostered solely to protect him from the Rule 5.
by Vlad on Apr 21, 2009 5:16 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
That ain't so bad
If management thought enough of Lerud that they believe some other GM would put him on the ML roster for all of 2009.
Of course, the last couple guys on the PBC 40 man roster aren’t quite as good as the last couple guys on most MLB team’s 40 man roster.
Not suggesting he’s any choice at all for 2009. Just wondering if the PBC has a C prospect in the organization.
I guess it’s too late for Neil Walker to put back on the tools of ignorance?

Andrew Walker
at West Virginia is about the only catcher in the system that is considered a prospect…that I am aware of. WTM might be able to add a little more.
by Thunder on Apr 21, 2009 5:42 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Nope, that’s pretty much it, although I believe Vlad has a man-crush on Craig Parry.
by Charlie on Apr 21, 2009 5:54 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Man-crush is maybe a little strong.
I think he’s worth keeping an eye on, which is darn good for a 50th round pick. But I’m not sure whether they plan on using him as a catcher or not – he only played one game there after signing last year.
by Vlad on Apr 21, 2009 6:07 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
There's also Ramon Cabrera
He’s got good bloodlines, and the initial returns were decent. But he hasn’t even started playing US ball yet.
by Vlad on Apr 21, 2009 6:14 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, hopefully he gets a shot this year.
by Charlie on Apr 21, 2009 6:29 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, I’d say Walker’s about it. There’s a guy who was in the VSL last year, Ramon Cabrera, who has some potential, but he’ll be in the GCL this year at best.
Andrew Walker got off to a bad start but has hit well his last few games. His BB/K numbers so far have improved drastically over his injury-plagued season last year. I’m hoping he can play his way to Lynchburg by June. Guy has good power, but needs to show it in games more.

I know it sucks, but...
At least the hope will be gone early and we can look forward to a top draft pick again next year!
by SpacePirate on Apr 21, 2009 4:47 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
You gotta be kiddin' me..
Well, we’ll try again next year. You talk about pressure on Adam LaRoche! Guess who has to drive in the runs now! That pressure just doubled with Doumit out. He HAS to hit now with Doumit out if we want any shot of still being in contention in June/July. Better luck in 2010.

I don’t know how I missed this! This is all Adam LaRoche’s fault!!!

who knows
maybe adam will thrive in that pressure cooker and have a full year like everyone has always expected him to

No question,
Doumit will be missed. But over the course of two months or 50 games we aren’t talking about more than a net couple wins vs. avg. replacement player. Let’s see if the staff can keep it up. If you shutout the opponent 3 out of every 4 games, I don’t think we’ll have much to worry about. Over under on Karstens tonight has to be 5.5 runs.
by dtoddwin on Apr 21, 2009 5:35 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I'll take the under.
I think the Marlins are on the cusp of an offensive ‘super-slump’ that will see them dip under .500 by the end of May.
Karstens must have felt like he was a fish out of water during his last start. How would you perform, compared to your colleagues, if your first day back after the Christmas break was near the end of January?
Regarding Doumit’s injury. Did NH forget that he’d left the Indians organization and the American League before signing our future All-Star DH to a multi-year deal?
Surely that’s what Ryan will now become. The Buccos need to get him fit, get him hitting and play him at 1st and RF then trade him at the first opportunity.

Give him a chance!!!!!!!!!!!!
Give Jaramello a chance man you people are crazy saying things like “we’re done” they are playing good ball. Jaramello has not gotten a chance in the big leagues until this year, and in the 2 games he’s played he’s looked good. I think that Jaramello is going to hit better than the .244 that Doumit is hitting.
Diaz? do you really think he’s better if Jaramello keeps hitting then how can he be better??? Defence I don’t think so.
by matdbratfan on Apr 21, 2009 6:22 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I like Jaramillo, and I hope he does well, but...
Doumit had 15 HR last season. Jaramillo has a total of 29 in his five-year professional career.
It’s a big loss for the offense.
by Vlad on Apr 21, 2009 6:40 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Looking at this roster....
I don’t think they built this team on power, Also 15?? thats not going to make or break a season.
by matdbratfan on Apr 21, 2009 6:47 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
A home run is a home run.
It has the same value regardless of what a team is “built on”.
by Vlad on Apr 21, 2009 6:58 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
.444
1 for 1 with a RBI I don’t care how many HR’s he’s got if he keeps hitting the ball. Is it to early to say AL STAR .lol
by matdbratfan on Apr 21, 2009 8:05 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Just a bit too early, yes.
I hope he does well, and I’m glad he got a hit yesterday, but in the aggregate this is still a huge offensive downgrade for the club.

Neil Walker!
I’m kidding, I’m 6! This realllly sucks. Hopefully Jamarillo can maintain the status quo on D. T

Heh, loved this quote from Doumit:
“If there was anything I could do … just cut the hand off and let me play.”
He’s lucky Littlefield’s gone. DL would’ve totally gone for that.

Didn't post where I wanted it to-
I was referencing your Matt Wieters remark.
Vlad-Cutting off parts of injured fingers has worked for a few football players.
We’ll miss Doumit, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the Jaramillo/Diaz platoon will give us enough for a couple of months to get by.
by patthatt on Apr 21, 2009 6:54 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Yep,
and I remember reading last year about a lower-level college player who had the same thing done.
It’s a shame about Doumit, but were any of us really expecting him to play a ton of games with his injury history? Some might have said so in our preseason predictions, but Doumit on the DL is no big surprise.
Let’s hope for the best behind the plate and for others to provide more power.
