Players on the move

Since our World Series is the trading deadline, which players do yinz see on the move?  I'll start:

Adam LaRoche - replace with Steve Pearce (Note:  We keep running Moss out there, why not let Pearce.  He can keep the spot warm for Alvarez and at a seriously reduced cost).

Jack Wilson - replace with Brian Bixler (Note:  BB is not the long term answer, but we could look for a top 5-10 propect in return for Jack).

Freddy Sanchez - replace with Delwyn Young (Note: This could be disastrous for the second half, but if his bat is halfway decent we could live with it).

Overall realistic return I would like to see from a trading partner - top 5 pitching propect, proven number 4 starter, top 5-10 SS prospect, proven major league IF, raw/toolsy upside player and of course the organizational throw ins.  Am I being too optimistic or is this about right?

BTW - if they made me an offer to manager I am there yesterday!

LaRoche could generate at top 5 pitching prospect, proven major league IF

Sanchez could bring a 4 SP and organizational

Wilson could generate a 5-10 SS prospect and organizational

Raw/toolsy may be a reach but it would be on us to steal that from a big market/big money team

bixler

Ugh. Can we insist on omar vizquel if we trade with the rangers? Or any decent ML ss we can play on the cheap. I can’t even think rationally about it. The though of Bixler playing again makes me sick

Amen to that.

Bix is done. I hope anybody but Bix plays SS when Jack leaves. End of story.

Well

Why not trot him out there everyday? Its not as if he is going to single handedly lose games for us. We have nothing to lose with him out there? He hasnt had enough sampling of ABs at the major league level. He always knows he is a fill in. Give him the job and see what happens.

He's brutal

I can imagine him watching tape with Don Long

Don: You see the problem is at the start of your swing Brian
Bixler: But I didn’t swing, I just watched 5 pitches go by and struck out looking
Don: Exactly.

Please get anyone else besides him to play short if Jack leaves/ isn’t resigned. Maybe James Donald if we trade with Philly? He has some potential and the MI is blocked there

Donald's a good prospect...

…but from everything I’ve read, he’s a 2B in MLB, not a SS.

Well after Coondog locks Freddy in an equipment closet or something for 20 games, we might need one of those right?

I guess.

It doesn’t really do much toward saving us from a year of Bixler at short, though.

Would the return for Adam LaRoche necessarily be better

than the compensatory pick we would get in the 2010 draft by keeping him til the end of this season? I don’t know of course, but it’s something the team will have to take into account.

by patthatt on May 12, 2009 5:30 PM EDT reply actions

I would hope so...

because sometimes the draft appears to be a crapshoot after the first 10 or so picks. The other question would be where the compensatory pick would end up. I suspect it’s more likely for Adam to be Type B than Type A…especially the way this season is going. In addition, it would also depend on how many free agents the signing team acquires. Remember, some comp picks for this draft got shuffled backwards more than the losing team anticipated because of the amount of FA’s the Yankees signed.

by Thunder on May 12, 2009 6:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Could be an interesting market

What if Laroche (and agent) reads the market as down again? He might accept arbitration, then we’re probably looking at a hefty one year contract and no comp pick.

by azibuck on May 12, 2009 11:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Thunder

Yeah, I agree . We can’t be sure at this point where the pick would be and the quality we could get. But a trade of Adam LaRoche with only a couple of months left in the season- and before he becomes a FA- isn’t going to get anything more than a decent prospect or two. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

by patthatt on May 12, 2009 8:40 PM EDT reply actions

One or two decent prospects...

COULD be better than a 2nd or 3rd round draft choice. We’d probably be waiting 4 years on the draft choice to make it to the majors. Hopefully, any prospects would be a little closer than that.

by Thunder on May 12, 2009 11:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Talking about a top-5 or top-10 prospect is useless...

…without knowing the organization from which these prospects are coming. There are guys outside Oakland’s top 20 who’d be in the top 5 for Washington.

Im with you

It’s all about trusting your evaluation of players. Sometimes an organization will sour on a guy for whatever reason and a change of scenery, coaches or just seeing something they don’t can bring back added value. Tabata comes to mind.

I think it is safe to say

that an overall 5-10 per organization would be a good return for LaRoche.

by vanslyke on May 13, 2009 10:55 AM EDT reply actions

VanSlyke,

You dreaming with regard to expected returns. A proven anybody is not going to be given up by a contender and nobody else will be shopping for LaRoche, Sanchez, or Wilson.

LaRoche will need to be more consistent this year to be worth a top-prospect and possibly not even then.

Wilson will not generate much of a return no matter what he does. Mid-level prospect at best. He is better kept in Pittsburgh and signed to an extension.

Sanchez need to continue hitting like he has to worth a top-level prospect and I do not think his power will hold up over the course of the season. Batting average yes, power no.

However, I could be wrong and some contender could be desperate. One can hope ….

by BobDH on May 13, 2009 2:37 PM EDT reply actions

I really dont disagree

In order to get more prospects, we may have to shop a McClouth/Doumit/Maholm. While I would hate to see them go, we can lose 90 withouth them. They have value, upside and are becoming a proven commodity. You could move them for decent return – howbeit not major league ready talent or over this hill talent. That would put us out a few more years, but would give us more options to parlay with the draft.

by vanslyke on May 13, 2009 3:30 PM EDT reply actions

It goes back to...

if you are going to shop a player like Nate, or Ryan, or Paul…you can’t get a pedestrian return on them. The trade of one of those players needs to put you in a position to significantly improve the team and/or organization. Swapping one of them for equal value doesn’t accomplish that…you need more return than what you are sending. We’re quite a few years away from losing any of those three to free agency…so we need to either keep them…or find deals that make significant improvements.

by Thunder on May 13, 2009 4:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Adam LaRoche

If the right team is able to contend (or come close) then Adam has some value. I’m thinking about the Giants here, as Ishakawa is not doing well. And with Adam’s reputation of heating up, trading him as soon as he gets hot could get us a decent prospect (see last year as Cleveland got Carlos Santana + for Casey Blake).

by God Loves on May 13, 2009 4:17 PM EDT reply actions

Adam...on the other hand...

we could lose after this year. The return on him would not be expected to be as high as if we traded Nate, Ryan or Paul. A team isn’t going to send as much to us for a “2 month rental”.

by Thunder on May 13, 2009 4:22 PM EDT up reply actions

What about...

If he went to a team for a rental that might possibly sign him later for a few years. Maybe the Cubs if Derek Lee doesn’t turn it around?

by gorillakilla34 on May 14, 2009 3:07 AM EDT up reply actions

Since the Cubs

would be doing the signing and the Cubs would be ponying up the money, why would it make much difference? I kinda see what you’re saying, but I don’t see why the Cubs would think that was worth giving the Pirates much more than they would as a rental. It’s like, the Cubs could just wait until he became an FA and sign him then if they want him that much. Why would they give the Pirates anything for that?

by bucdaddy on May 14, 2009 10:54 AM EDT up reply actions

I'm just saying...

that if he is hot post June and they feel that he is the piece they need for a now over the hill Derek Lee they might find him as an attractive player because he could potentially sign there for a few seasons. I’m not saying that they will give up their top prospect or anything but they might be willing to part with a slightly better prospect because they know Mario’s second half reputation. Also I bet Lou is very desperate to get that 0 for 6 playoff record off his back in Chicago.

by gorillakilla34 on May 14, 2009 2:20 PM EDT up reply actions

I would not be against trading a Maholm/Doumit/McClouth

if we could get a signifcant organizational upgrade. Judging from what we have in the minor leagues, we may be forced to do that; however, it is a big risk. If you get the trades wrong, you set back the organization for years. Do I believe team Hunington/Coonley have the people in place to pull the trade off……..???? Hmmm……it would be balzy!

by vanslyke on May 13, 2009 5:31 PM EDT reply actions

Can't see getting much for Wilson...

I just can’t see anything decent coming from wilson…. i think also that if someone get’s him for the playoff run they definatly won’t sign him next year. Also let’s be honest Jack is a great player and i think he wants to stick around to see the team finally succeed but i could be wrong. And i agree i can’t stand seeing Bix on the opening day lineup next year. Gross!!!!!!
