Indy v Rochester 2

Just got back from the 11 a.m. "businessman's special" and I would mirror all of azibuck's comments, including the fact that I am someone who's played a lot of baseball and watches a lot of baseball, but I'm not someone to take seriously.

The speed gun here in Roch is a MPH or two slow.  Far too many readings of 49 and 54 to be relied upon.

Pearce cannot hit an offspeed pitch.  He did manage a single though.

Andrew McCutchon went 3-3 and got on base on a error.  Not much pop in his bat.  He came off as Nyjer-like.  I'm going to thursday and friday's games, so we'll see.

Neil Walker DH'd and Luis Cruz played 3rd.  Doesn't bode well for Neil long-term, in my opinion.  He had a single.

Daniel McCutchen pitched pretty well.  6 innings, 3 runs, 7 hits.  He throws strikes, but his velocity isn't great, and I would call his breaking stuff average.  Average today anyway.  He would get lit up in the majors right now.

Rochester has a reliever named Juan Morillo who even with Rochester's iffy gun hit 97.  He made the Indian batters look foolish.

On a side note I sat near a woman who was at least 80.  In the first inning she almost got nailed by a pop-up foul.  For 7 innings I was somewhat concerned for her safely, as we were in a foul ball heavy area.  Then in the 7th she snared a balled up t-shirt out of the air like she was Brooks Robinson.  Remind me to never doubt my mother.

re: Walker/Cruz

I don’t think there’s anything to read into.
I think it’s just Cruz getting time in at a different position – since he’s seen as more of a utility guy nowadays.

Nyjer-like?

He hit the same number of doubles Nyjer has hit all year in today’s game and has 3 times as many extra base hits on the year. He must have some sort of pop, even if he’s no Griffey just yet.

I think this bears repeating for those who didn’t see it the first two times: Not much pop.

"even if he’s no Griffey just yet"

Let’s see if we can get R.J. Reynolds-like contributions first.

Our 2010 Opening Day roster OFs will probably include Nate McLouth, Nyjer Morgan, Brandon Moss and Andrew McCutchen. This group has some speed and defense, but definitely lacks “pop.” We’ve got to find more, but I don’t think it will come from internal options like Steve Pearce or Jose Tabata.

I’m hopeful McCutchen will give us another productive player, but he’s got a ways to just yet.

Respectfully disagree on ACutch's pop; other notes

Dude, he drilled a double about 380 feet to center on the 4th pitch of the game. The triple he hit yesterday wasn’t some cheapie he popped over a shallow OF. In the 5 games I’ve seen him live, he’s never dead-pulled the ball, not even foul. When he starts turning on some of these, he’ll hit the homers. The comp with Nyjer is way, way off.

He did have a Mr. Excitement moment though, again with his defense. On a deep fly he got turned completely around before hauling the ball in. In a way it was spectacular, and he actually looked smooth doing it, as if taking his eyes off a drive and changing direction at full speed and still making the catch is like walking down the street. Still, in my eyes these defensive adventures have become a trend.

Agreed on the gun. Morillo was hitting mid/high-90s, but he didn’t seem that much faster than DCutch, and velocity is something I pay close attention to. That said, not many swings and misses — 4 by my count. Also, he was not throwing as hard as last year, not at all. Like Gorz, that Fanpost from last year is pretty true for this year, mostly “good stuff but nothing that really wows you.” He was less impressive. Also like Gorz, I think he’s little more than fringe depth right now. He might be a better reliever than some of the guys in Pgh though.

Neil Walker again looked… comfortable, with walk and line single. I think it will be interesting to see where he stands in another month. He has not looked overmatched at all.

Bixler on the other hand… I think this guy has just been lucky with his hitting. He doubled on a fly to RCF that probably would have been caught easily in the bigs, and he walked. But he also K’d twice, looking overmatched, and had a GIDP.

like i said, it was only one game. he’s a small guy who makes the best of his skills. he’s never going to hit 20 homers, bigs or minors. he got on base 100% of the time today. no complaints.

Of course McCutchen doesn't have much power yet.

He’s only 22. If he’d been a college draftee, he’d just be starting his first year of full-season ball.

If he’s going to develop more power (and he might or might not), he probably won’t start showing much of it for at least two or three more years.

That's true, but others have hit for more power

Like Jay Bruce — who is of completely different stature — but it’s an easy conclusion to draw, that’s all. I’m not worried about his power, it’s already there just not in the form of HR yet.

McCutchen is slugging .488. There were five centerfielders in the majors who slugged that high last year. Puh – lease.

by WTM on May 14, 2009 10:47 AM EDT reply actions

Wow, hadn't noticed that.

That’s a whole bunch of triples this year, and a .212 ISO to go with it. Maybe we won’t have to wait so long for the power to develop after all…
