Our natural rival is...
Nobody. And that is because we bring nothing to the table except the ability to allow our opponents to pad their statistics by playing us. You can't blame the Phillies, Mets, or Indians for not wanting to be tagged as our rival. It's like the short, fat, ugly girl wanting to be part of the "IN-CROWD". You simply have to have something to offer or nobody cares. One need only look at the NFL to see that the Detroit Lions only play on national television on Thanksgiving and even that wouldn't happen if they hadn't invented the idea. Just take note that the NFL continues to rotate the teams that are allowed to beat the Lions because nobody wants to be permanently associated with the Lions. Well, the same scenario is true for MLB and will continue to be true until such time as the Pirates bring something to the table. Let's face it. We are the Short, Fat, Ugly girl in MLB and nobody cares!

Does this mean
as Pirate fans, we’re “chubby chasers?”

The Mets and Phillies
used to be big rivals with us back in the day….the day we weren’t losing year after year.

I agree that although we may not have natural AL rivals (although Cleveland, Baltimore and New York seem logical) the best thing that could happen to Pittsburgh is to have the Pirates moved to the NL East. Mets, Phillies, Braves…sure beats the Astros, Cubs and Cardinals. The only Central team we really have a history with is the Reds.

“we bring nothing to the table except the ability to allow our opponents to pad their statistics by playing us”
Off the top of my head, I’d say our starters have done a pretty good job keeping runs off the board this season; better than just about any of us expected so far.
We’ve had some crappy relief performances most of the year, though.
“will continue to be true until such time as the Pirates bring something to the table”
Huntington and Coonelly have been working hard from late in the 2007 season to turn things around. I know that you and your elderly sidekick, the gunner, have little patience, so I guess you’ll just have to suffer til we put a good team on the field again.
I see signs things are getting better throughout the organization, but you two can’t see the forest for the trees.

Huh
I would have thought the fact we usually suck would make us an attractive pairing for a team looking to score 2-3 easy wins.

Like I alluded to in Charlie’s post, the Pirates need to get competitive before they can get rivals.
Look to the Steelers for an example (sorry), the Ravens despite being a new-ish team are the Steelers biggest rivals while an historical rival like the Browns is much less so due to crappiness.
The Pirates don’t need to play historical rivals like the Mets or Phillies in order to create modern rivals, they need to compete.
I made most of my life decisions at a Foghat concert... I stand by them.

Taking it all in.
This is my first post. Came across the Buc’s Dogout by accident. I have Nate McLouth in a fantasy league, so i started getting into the Pirates. I think the Buc’s have some good young talent, but it takes time to develop. Do they really have anyone to give up for an established player to build around, or tough it out. How good is this McCutchen? Stats don’t seem that great. Buc’s outfield is kinda crowded right now. Who is gonna go, or sit on the bench. White Sox are trying to get some young guys in their lineup, and it’s been tough to watch at times. Someone said the Buc’s should move to the East. There’s nothing wrong with the NL Central. When were the Red’s Pitt’s biggest rival? Musta missed that one. Just some things i threw out there. Good series coming up with the Cubbies starting tonight. Couple games might get rained out. Chance for the Buc’s to turn it around. Cub’s are in a huge SLUMP!!!!!!!!! Come on Nate, start hitting for me.

McCutchen
is widely regarded as one of the top 10-20 prospects in the game, although I agree, his stats, while pretty good, are nothing like say, Wieters who is also younger than him. What would probably happen, if he was brought up is Morgan would be traded/bench player and McLouth would move to a corner spot. Moss might lose his spot, but since hes hitting much better now and Morgan’s slumping slightly, and since he has at least a little power, probably not.

Our Biggest Rivals
Are definetly the Reds and Nationals. The Brewers can get tossed in there too. We definetly have some bad blood with them.

How
are the Nats our rivals? Theyve been there for 3-4 years, and weve never actually competed against them…

they are one of the only teams that haven't been 234 times better than us
and because i said so. but maybe i shouldve said that they will be our rivals soon enough.

"Playoffs!?! Who's talking about Playoffs!?"
In the immortal words of Jim Mora.
I think like the rivalries wer’re seeing develop for the Pens and Steelers, rivalries are born in the playoffs. Unfortunately since MLB is elitist and only includes the top 27% of its teams into the playoffs each year (compared to 37.5% NFL, 53.3% NHL/NBA) the chances of the Pirates soon forming any new rivalries this way are slim.
However, if we look at those teams that the Pirates have the most grumblings with, I’d say the Brewers are our cheif rivalry right now. If somehow this season ends better than is expected, say a run at a winning record, or even a wildcard (Please don’t hate me, I can dare to dream), then whomever we we’re playing those critical games against may be the new Rivalries we’re all apparently looking for.
In short I agree with the premise of this thread. The Bucs have done little to offerANY competition to any of their potential rivals, and until they begin sticking in the side of someone that’s not likely to change.

Id have to agree
there was some bad blood last series, and there hasnt been any recent animosity between us and the Cards/Cubs/Reds/Astros. (Well maybe a little with the Cubs) But rivalries are born out of three things: Playing each other a lot, closeness to each other, and competitiveness. The Pirates simply arent any good right now, and its kind of hard to have a rival when you arent competing for anything but last place.
