Pedro Alvarez highlight reel

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ERqN7WSr5rc

Just because it's been a while for anyone who doesn't live in Lynchburg.  I know it's old but come on, who doesn't want to watch Pedro Alvarez be really good at baseball for 5 minutes?!

My favorite parts:

The first swing/ absolute bomb

1:20  the sound the bat makes is like a gunshot

1:30  Hits an absolute bomb then plays rock paper scissors with David Price

2:40  Bomb

3:25 Another bomb

Also nice to see him play some nifty D.  I know everyone talks about  him moving to 1B, but ideally in my mind, he sticks at 3B, Andy moves to second, Calvin Anderson develops at 1B and Friday, D'Arneaud or Mercer pans out at SS for our 2012 IF

Interview with "Vandy Lance" at 1:05, 1:40  Awesome.

Good stuff

but he’d better keep hitting bombs, ’coz he runs like a Molina.

Free your ass and your mind will follow.

Wow, I wouldn’t go that far with it. He’s not the fastest guy in the world, but he’s not a slug, either. All he needs to worry about is continuing to hit bombs and driving in runs. Unless he was passed tonight, he leads the Single-A league in RBI. He needs to be brought up to Double-A Altoona.

No, no, no.

If you want to promote him at midseason (and I wouldn’t, yet), then don’t jump him over A+.

Oops, NM.

Thought we were talking about Anderson, for some reason.

That said, RBI tell you nothing about a player’s prospect status.

how about 2:10

the location of the pitch is possibly low and on the outside part of the plate and he just obliterates it to left-center. Beautiful.

He finally gets in a throw that doesn’t pound the dirt in front of the first baseman at the end of the video.

mspirate-
if only RBI were the only thing that mattered. He needs to hit better than .235 before they can consider moving him up a league or he is going to get smoked. The annoying part of it is if he wouldn’t have pulled his childish holdout stunt, he could have gotten his feet wet at Hickory last year and maybe would have realized that he would need to show up in shape this year and perhaps he would already be in Altoona.

Ya noticed that too. A lot of guys can hit meat of the fence (see: Pena, Willy Mo) but that’s a great piece of hitting.

You’re right about his holdout situation. That didn’t help at all, but I think a promotion to Double-A would be good for him. I think he would hit better because he would get better pitches to hit. Having said that, he doesn’t need to show more patience and not swing at balls way out of the zone. I think he’s gotten better, but plate discipline is huge for him. If he can develop that plate discipline and get to the point where he isn’t chasing any pitches out of zone, watch out! He could be really scary! By the way, he’s hitting .243…haha.

oops..obviously I meant to say does need to show more plate discipline.

by mspirate on May 31, 2009 1:16 PM EDT up reply actions

lol

you are certainly right about plate discipline. It can be the difference between say Adam Dunn and Brad Eldridge.

Calvin Anderson is a good prospect...

…but I think the start of 2012 is a little aggressive for his timeline. He was a little raw coming out of college, as the SWAC isn’t particularly high-level competition, and I think he gets a year apiece at A+, AA, and AAA to learn about high-level breaking stuff before they hand him a job (assuming that he keeps hitting, of course).

If he doesn’t have any setbacks (knock on wood), I could buy him getting his feet wet after roster expansion in 2012, with a look as a regular in 2013.

CALVIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIN

Nice. Does anyone else feel like if Pedro continues to be a high K, high BB guy his ceiling might be Adam Dunn and his floor might be Mark Reynolds? Not the worst thing in the world, but I would hope he gets the K’s down and starts hitting for higher average, considering how big a part he is in the bucs future.

Adam Dunn isn't a likely outcome.

Pedro isn’t nearly that athletic, and he doesn’t have Dunn’s batting eye.

In terms of overall value, though...

…you might be right, if he isn’t able to correct his issues with contact.

by Vlad on Jun 1, 2009 9:44 AM EDT up reply actions

Is that Sarcasm about athleticism? if not I’m now terrified.

Dunn and athleticism:

He was a top quarterback prospect out of high school, and played QB at Texas in college. When the Reds drafted him, he was a CF, and he stayed there for his first couple of seasons in the minors.

He’s too big to look graceful, and he’s kind of a botch as a fielder, but there’s a lot of natural athleticism there. As big a moose as he is, he’s still got eight career triples, and a 59/20 career SB/CS.

Also worth keeping in mind at 1B:

After a very slow start, Matt Hague hit .323/.381./469 in May. Good to see him turning it around.
