DL for Donnie Veal
Donnie Veal was apparently placed on the 15-day disabled list today with a "groin pull" that occured when he pitched for fifth time of the season on Friday. By "groin pull" I mean "we need our roster spot back for a while", not that there are really any better options in AAA. Dejan speculates that V V and Steven Jackson are the likely candidates, although I think it could be Chris Bootcheck. His era is fairly poor, but they were pretty close to keeping him in spring training and his 32K/4BB in 23.1 innings is tremendous, which perhaps speaks to the idea that a couple of bad outings hurt his ERA (as can happen easily with relievers).
At any rate, it doesn't really matter who we bring up, they aren't going to be all that much better than Veal, but the difference will be that we won't be working with a six man (or five man as the case has been since Capps was beaned) pen. It's nice to try and find a live lefty arm through the Rule 5, but when he simply can NEVER pitch it hurts, and I question how much value Veal himself is getting from nothing but bullpen sessions.

Chris Bootcheck
is not on the 40-man roster, so I imagine his chances of coming up are somewhere between slim and none.
My guess is Steven Jackson will be recalled, with Virgil Vazquez waiting in the wings as a rotation replacement.
Gorzo will probably be sent down when Flood Gates Yates returns.
Once again, though, it is nice to have a little depth for the rotation at Indy in D. Cutch, VV, and Gorzo.
ah
40 man—did not recall that

Isn’t there some sort of rule about how long a rule 5 pick can stay on the DL?
I made most of my life decisions at a Foghat concert... I stand by them.

he can spend up to
thirty days on the DL and still be retained by acquiring team, as i understand.
i’d love to send a link, but i’ve tried to find clarification on the stipulations, but i had no success.
if more than thirty days, then he must start the process over again, to an extent.
That sounds right. I don’t think anyone completely understands how the rule 5 system works.

He can stay on the DL as long as he wants.
But if he misses more than X number of days, then he neeeds to spend the corresponding number of days on the ML roster at the start of the next season or be offered back to his original club.
This does come up from time to time – look at Adam Stern in Boston, for example.
Actually...looking on wikipedia...
I see a mention that the selected player must be active for 90 days during the season…or the remaining days have to be applied for the following season. Right now…Veal has been active for 53 days by my count. So if the Pirates want to keep him…and be able to send him to the minors next season…he’s still going to need at least 37 days somewhere.
we're playing the same game
in chicago with david patton. i guess i shoulda checked wikipedia instead of the mlb rulebook.
Dejan reports
that Bootcheck or Denny Bautista could be added to the 40-man roster and brought up if Craig Hansen is moved to the 60-day DL.
Bautista could be ugly.
17 BB in 22 AAA innings. Would make him a pretty accurate replacement for Hansen, though.
Bootcheck could be decent. His peripherals this year are much better than his ERA/WHIP would indicate. Of course, his long-term track record is more spotty, though.
yeah when I was looking at Bootcheck
I’m wondering why this thirty something reliever has so little ML experience.
