The Morning After.....

I live on the east coast and just got up.  That will tell you something about my evening yesterday.  A few thoughts I need to share so I don't institutionalize myself:

1.) I know this is a baseball blog, but don't you think the Penguins defense should pay slightly more attention to Ovechkin when he's on the ice?  The guy is unquesitonably fantastic and I've never seen anyone who can get a shot off quicker, but I'm thinking I might always wanna have a general idea of where he is on the ice rather than have him skating down the left side wide open five times a game.

And, as a interesting side note, both he and Crosby had hat tricks last night.  If you add up the distance from the goal of each guy's three goals, Crosby's probably totals less than five feet.  Ovechkin's is about sixty.

2.) Most people on this site agree that Dejan does a great job as a beat writer for the Pirates.  I do as well.  But, I find it hilarious when he says he doesn't advocate, as he said in his chat yesterday.  He advocates all the time.  Last spring he was bascially outraged that Sean Burnett didn't come north with the Pirates after throwing NINE (italics mine) scoreless innings in spring training.  Yesterday in his chat he advocated repeatedly for Craig Monroe but denied that was what he was doing.  Then this morning he links to Smizik's article on Monroe using bold italics (italics mine).  Of course he is advocating, he is screaming that the Pirates should play Monroe.

I don't mind that Dejan has a opinion, I just find it remarkably funny that he thinks he never expresses it, that he only "reports the facts."  He expresses his opinion all the time.

3.) Here is Craig Monroe's page at baseball-reference.com:

http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/monrocr01.shtml

Let's stop talking about his eight spring training home runs and also note that the guy is 32.  Bob Smizik, Dejan, lumberco and everyone else need to step back and seek a moment of clarity.  I'm sure he's a great guy.  We aren't going to win 90 games or learn anything of value by giving him 400 at bats.  Give it a rest.  Please.

4.)  How can anybody justify John Russell's handling of the pitching staff?  A week ago he brings Ian Snell out to pitch the seventh inning of a 0-0 game after he has thrown 107 pitches.  He lets Snell finish the inning after giving up a home run and a walk, throwing a total of 131 pitches.  He is quoted as saying he wanted to give Snell a chance to "win the game."

Yesterday he pulls Maholm after a walk in the eighth inning.  Maholm had thrown 98 pitches.  I haven't seen the quote but I'm sure Russell wanted Maholm to have a chance to win the game.  With one man on and up 3-1 that was the only thing that could happen.

Yates comes in and gets an out against the right handed batting Richie Weeks.  Russell then decides to go matchup and brings in Grabow to pitch to the left handed batting Prince Fielder.  Okay fine.  Single.  Right handed Mike Cameron up.  No more matching up, he leaves Grabow in.  I guess I can handle that.  Walk.  Bases loaded.  Ryan Braun, right handed batter, pinch hits.  One of the five best hitters in the NL.

If you are EVER going to use Matt Capps for more than one inning this is the time.  Listen, I don't love Capps.  He has a fastball that is probably a 65 on the scouts' scale, but it has very little movement.  He doesn't have anything else other than great command.  At best he is Papplebon light.  But he's your closer and now is the time.  Nothing.  Braun doubles.  Tie game.  Capps gets blown up in the ninth and the Pirates lose.

I've said this before.  Russell manages to his players statistics first, the action on the field second.  It is mindblowing to me that this is not the lead issue with the team thus far.  The Pirates may not have won either game referenced above.  But Russell certainly put them in a better position to lose both.  His decison making is unconsciounable.

I love it when I criticize Dejan for an opinion he expresses, and then people comment here that he doesn’t express opinions.

My theory is that the way closers are used

is a result of the blown save statistic and that managers tend to be willing to acquiesce to the desires of their top players. Closers don’t like to come in with men on base because one small mistake then results in a blown save and makes their statistics look bad.

At least on the surface, it is ridiculous that a team’s top reliever isn’t usually used in the most critical situations as has been argued on numerous occassions. Does anyone have another idea on why closers are used the way that they are today?

And another note on JR's bad decision

Coming into that atbat, Fielder had a career batting average against Grabow of .500 (7 of 14). Wouldn’t it have made more sense to use Burnett in his 1 useful situation? He wasn’t even managing on his player’s statistics in that instance.

Yes....

and when I said he managed to players stats, I meant trying to get a pitcher a win or Capps a save. I did not mean using statistical information to make an informed decision.

I have referenced this in the past, but last year the Pirates were playing the Mets in April and were up something like 7-1 in the fourth inning. Gorzo had, as usual, thrown a ton of pitches and then had to call the trainer out because he appeared to injure his back. There is NO possible reason to keep him in the game at that point, but Russell wanted him to go five so he could get the win. He did. He also got hurt and was terrible the rest of the year. Maybe not direct cause and effect, but another completely indefensible decision.

Eh, yes and no.

I don’t know that I would’ve done that, if for no other reason than that Burnett is terrible.

Burnett

matches up very well vs lefties though. He is terrible vs righties.

He had some BABIP luck against lefties last year.

I think he’s due for a regression, given how bad he was against both lefties and righties in ‘06/’07.

He might be better than I think. I just don’t trust him at all, though.

I guess...

JR only looks at stats to back up his gut feelings. Instead of when they actually make a difference.

After 36 pitches last night…doubt we see Capps before Thursday.

Just a bad night...

Look, last night was one that fans and players alike would just assume forget. Once JR pulled Maholm in the eighth (why..I have no idea) and brought in Yates, you could just feel the anxiety and uncertainty of what was going to transpire over the next inning and a half. Yates actually did good, striking out the only hitter he faced, but Grabow came in a gave up that bloop double to Braun (you couldn’t have placed that ball any better between Moss, Sanchez and LaRoche, but Moss was playin’ deeper than usual) and everything went down hill from there. And then Capps…where do I begin? They just need to forget about it and try to win tonight. Don’t dwell on it.

Last I checked,

DK was a beat writer, not a baseball expert
someone should tell him that

I won’t comment on 1, because I just don’t know hockey.

but

2,3) I agree. Enough with Craig Monroe. Play Moss to find out what you have and give him a chance to develop…don’t play Monroe just to prove what he is…it’s not good.

4) You wanna pull Maholm there? Fine. I won’t complain about that.

but when Grabow misses his mark by a foot on the first pitch to Fielder (supposed to be a fastball off the outside edge that caught the inside corner) and then missed by nearly that much with the second (supposed to be off the plate by 3 or 4 inches – it was at least 3-4 inches in off the outside corner), it was easy to see he wasn’t very sharp. Then he had trouble throwing strikes to Cameron…

and it’s true, if there is a situation that you need a closer, there it is – when Braun is announced as pinch-hitter, Capps should be on his way to the mound.

I’d have a less sour taste if you lose the lead with Capps in the 8th than just letting Grabow flap around with less than his best.

I don’t mind managing to the stats, I just wish managers would manage to the useful stats. That means ignoring saves, pitcher’s wins, etc… I’d include holds, but I don’t think anyone has ever thought holds were meaningful.

What Pitchers??

Oh…you mean the ones the manager burned out over the last week?? They’re arranging a group flight to Birmingham to see Dr. Andrews.
