Vote (of Confidence) for Pedro?
Nice to have these fanposts to toss ideas out there to the masses for consumption - and i promise, it has nothing to do with craig monroe.
I had discussed with pat recently (whygavs pat, that is) the fact that alvarez's numbers arent too fabulous right now. a rash of strikeouts and his numbers look shoddy.
then i started reading through things more, and i can't help but wonder if some of pedro's struggles are beyond his control. The Lynchburg roster is basically Pedro, Matt Hague, Jordy Mercer, and 11 other guys who are either very old for the level or slightly old and repeating. And Mercer and Hague aren't doing much.
Perhaps some of Pedro's struggles are attributable to opposing pitchers getting to face people like kent sakamoto for the other 8 at-bats instead of hitters to truly be concerned about? (i know, watts and presley are hitting, but i dont think opposing pitchers are exactly trembling at the sight of an org filler catcher)
My gut tells me that perhaps come months end, if they're still cruising at West Virginia, we promote Calvin Anderson and/or Chase D'Arnaud and see a boost in Pedro's numbers since he'd no longer be the only threat in the lineup?
Pat mentioned some rumblings about his sitting on fastballs and missing all else, but that strikes me as very odd, because he didn't do that at Vandy, and I don't think Class A+ ball is that far advanced from college.
This is all just speculative, but perhaps i'm at least marginally educated in my guessing?

Well, what did he do at Vandy to whiff so often?
Not that he was a windmill, but for a college slugger he struck out a lot.
It’s early, and I don’t know what he’s swinging at, but as a top pick out of college I would have expected more maturity if he is swinging at non-strikes. You want to get to Altoona? Either rake, or have an ungodly BB/K ratio, or, y’know, both.
I don’t mean to harp on Smoak, I just loved him coming out of college, but he started at AA Frisco for the Rangers, and is at .352/.468/.557 with a 19/12 BB/K ratio. Alvarez, a level lower, is at .212/.327/412 with a 16/27 BB/K ratio. I have a hunch Pedro is swinging and missing at some strikes too. Again, I used Smoak only as an example of a line I’d like to see. I’d be happier with Pedro under other circumstances too, like if he wasn’t walking much, but hitting .350+ with power. Or if his BB/K was the other way around.
Right now, I think the truth is that Pedro isn’t playing very well, and the reason is in his mirror.

This mention of Smoak at Yahoo! fantasy was scary. Anyone else on that high school team we don't want?
Justin Smoak (1B, TEX)
Would you believe that Smoak and Matt Wieters(notes) (C, BAL) were on the same high school team? Can you imagine the 15-year-old freshman with braces throwing 60 mph slop to these monsters? Please, there has to be some YouTube videos out there. This switch-hitting first baseman is going to be a fantasy superstar. He is already tearing up Double-A with a .359 BA, 4 HRs, .577 SLG, and 17:10 BB/K ratio in 78 ABs. Smoak could probably hold his own against major league hitting with his nice combination of power and patience. But, he won’t get anything more than a big league cup of coffee in September. Smoak will be entrenched in the Rangers’ lineup by mid-season next year. He is moving into the top-5 on my fantasy prospect list.

One thing I would like to note
is that AA pitchers are much more able to throw strikes than A+ pitchers, some of those guys are kinda just chucking the ball in with fingers crossed. Now, I’m not saying that Pedro shouldn’t be striking out less, he definitely needs to learn to lay off balls (or start getting better contact if he’s swinging through strikes), but my point is that perhaps Smoak would be in precisely the same boat if he was in high A. Difficult to tell.

I doubt it
AA hitters are much more able, period. I can probably spend 5 minutes at bbref and find 10 guys in the last 5 years that had no trouble at all in A+. Without looking, Matt Wieters last year. And Gordon Beckham is more than holding his own this year.

agreed
i’d love to spin this positively, but alvarez hasn’t started out so hot with the bat or on the field, no matter how you look at it.

I’m of the opinion that it’s too early to worry about Pedro. He hasn’t been playing minor league ball for that long and it’s only May.

I think it's OK to worry...
…as long as the worrying doesn’t prompt you to prematurely do anything rash.

So,
I shouldn’t worry about my rash?

Naw, that's all good.

How
do you think she got that rash on her other hand?
Hence my premature worrying.
