I’ll agree with you that Mario needs to ride the pine for at least a couple games too. We’re paying Hinske, might as well let him play a couple games and let Adam get his mind right.

by Brakeman8 on Jun 10, 2009 7:30 PM EDT up reply actions

He’s not starting outfield material! I know NH nor JR want to bench him because it would look terrible for the Pirates to already give up on a piece of one of last year’s big trades, but Moss is terrible. He is a fourth outfielder.

He almost didn’t come out of the dugout at the start of the game. Had a talk with Kerrigan and the trainer and then did come out. After the first inning they talked again and sent him back to the clubhouse.

Morton

The entire time before the game and after the first inning when Kerrigan, Russell and the trainer were talking with Morton, they were not examining him in any way. No checking elbows or knees or his back…just talking. So I doubt he is hurt…just sick.

Radio reports that

Morton has a strained hamstring.

Sounds not too terribly bad?

why Morton was even allowed to start?? You change your delivery because of hamstring pain…and all of a sudden that’s not the only thing hurting.

by Thunder on Jun 10, 2009 8:08 PM EDT reply actions

Why was Tabata allowed to take 2 AB’s the other day before sitting down again with his hammy strain?

by WstCstBucco on Jun 10, 2009 8:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Evidently...

Tabata was telling the (Curve) Pirates he was fine. Morton told the team before the game started…as the announcers mentioned even before the first pitch.

So JJ

did get a golden sombrero (well, not literally) for that performance?

Actually, Wikipedia suggests 5Ks would be a Platinum Sombrero…

What's 'bigger'

that titanium?

Or we need a bigger hat than a sombrero

The term derives from hockey’s hat trick and since four is bigger than three; the rationale was that a four-strikeout performance should be referred to by a bigger hat, such as a sombrero

by Brakeman8 on Jun 10, 2009 9:38 PM EDT reply actions

that was from Wikipedia

by Brakeman8 on Jun 10, 2009 9:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Even funnier from Wiki

The “Olympic Rings” or platinum sombrero applies to a player striking out five times in a game,1 while a horn (after Sam Horn of the Baltimore Orioles, who accomplished the feat in an extra-inning game in 1991) or titanium sombrero is bestowed upon a player who strikes out six times in a single game.

Power

In the past 3 days, the Giants have hit 2 HRs.
The Pirates have hit 0.
The Mets have hit 3.

That puts the Giants at 30, the Buccos at 33, and the Mets at 37 (on the season).
And that’s including the 9 from McLouth… which skew our numbers.

26-16

When we score more than 1 run. Hmm, I think we need more pitching!

by Brakeman8 on Jun 10, 2009 9:47 PM EDT up reply actions

But...

19-1 when we score more than 5 runs. We need more offense :)

by Thunder on Jun 10, 2009 9:49 PM EDT up reply actions

I was being sarcastic about the needing more pitching. I’m with you. Ifd we would scored more than a run or two every other night, we’d have a decent team.

by Brakeman8 on Jun 10, 2009 9:50 PM EDT up reply actions

LaRoches both on base at the same time? Isn’t that, well, kind of rare?

by wg1of5 on Jun 10, 2009 9:43 PM EDT reply actions

There was the game a couple days back

they batted in the same inning every at bat.

If Mario got a hit, Luigi got a hit.
If Mario walked, Luigi walked.
And if Mario got out, Luigi got out.

And it was like that for the entire game.

more surprising is the 0-10 with 1 run.

Don’t let best PH ever pinch hit. In Bizarro World, best PH plays in OF and 2B. He sucks in the field, which am bad in Bizzaro World, so it’s good.

It’s the casual fans that only know guys who have ever played in the majors. Most just don’t get the whole minor league thing and that the PBC is an entire baseball organization.

by Brakeman8 on Jun 10, 2009 9:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Snelling was highly rated

when he came through the Mariners system…but every time he would get hot in the minors…or get called up to the majors…he’d get a significant injury.
