Draft grade - just my opinion
If yesterday was a C+/B- kinda day, today is certainly an A/A- so far. However, it wouldn’t have been possible without the move they made on day one. So, overall – I’m thinking this draft is a B+ right now. Now if we can sign all the key guys.
A big ol atta boy for Neil, Frank, Greg and all the other members of the draft team.

Feeling great about the draft so far. Now we need to spend the money wisely and then do exactly what is needed July 2nd.

I think yesterday was more of a D/F without context, but today makes it all better.

A big factor I think a lot of people keep missing is that Sanchez was already using a wooden bat as a college player and still posted very good numbers.
by Brakeman8 on Jun 10, 2009 4:07 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
He’s a legitimate first round talent for sure, but according to every bit of information I’ve read, there were better guys available at the same price. (I guess we couldn’t get deals done ahead of time with all of them though.)

If you really think yesterday was a D or F, I can’t imagine that today fixes everything. Draft grades now are meaningless, but grading against what I wish they’d done, I’d say the draft is a C+ or B- overall. Assuming they’re going to sign the first four guys at slot, I still think they could have gotten more talent for the same amount of money. I do think we will spend more on the draft this year than all but a few other franchises, but it’s still critical for us to make the most out of every draft dollar, and as best I can tell we didn’t do that yesterday.
by shayborg on Jun 10, 2009 4:09 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, they may have been able to get more talent more similar dollars, but that doesn’t ruin the draft for me. If the first 4 rounds get a D and the other 46 rounds get an A, only the first 4 rounds suck talent-wise, I’d still say that’s more like a B-B+ draft

From his HS coach...
Aaron brings a lot of tools to the table. His versatility is going to be a great asset for us the next two years. He can pitch, play first, play outfield, runs pretty well, and has great instincts. Once he is able to add some bulk to his frame he is going to be an exciting player.

“The Hawkeyes also are keeping an eye on two of their signed recruits — Downers Grove (Ill.) North High School catcher Dan Sheppard and Norwalk lefty Matt Dermody.
“They’re getting a lot of play from pro scouts,” Dahm said. “They’re both asking for a lot of money, so they could go anywhere from maybe the fifth round to not going at all because of the amount of money it’s going to take to sign them.”"

Also goes by Wes?
He is best known for being a smart, accurate quarterback at Newman High School. He may make his mark in another sports.
NewOrleans.com Sports has learned that Wes Luquette has committed to play baseball for Paul Maineiri. Luquette is an outstanding hitter and catcher for the Greenies. He is also a superb quarterback.
Some Division One schools have shied away from him because of his height (just over 6’0) but Luquette figures to get a chance to play football at LSU as well. Luquette met with LSU football coach Les Miles about a week ago to discuss that possibility and Miles is a fan of Luquette.

by Brakeman8 on Jun 10, 2009 4:45 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
How many of these guys are they actually going to sign?
I mean geez, how many minor league pitchers can a team absorb? I thought NH wanted to sign 75% of these draftees? If he signs that many I see trouble.
Is Bradenton’s roster going to consist of 17 pitchers and 8 position players (with most of them either catchers or CFs)? Will every pitcher get to pitch three innings every 5 days?
Someone posted on another thread recently that NH never trades for middle IF’s. I know the team drafted and signed a couple SS last year, but they don’t seem to be drafting any IF (except one?) either so far this year.
Does NH think HS and college IF’s all suck? Or is it just this year?
by WstCstBucco on Jun 10, 2009 4:48 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
You need to draft to the strength of the player pool.
That’s the reason this is being done. They felt it was deep in pitching, draft a lot of pitchers, sign as many as possible and financially feasible, then let them play/develop and there are bound to be some useful players in there.
by hisjazziness on Jun 10, 2009 4:51 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
But play/develop where?
NH has drafted 3 teams worth of pitchers already today. That’s a complete staff for Bradenton, State College and the Power of WV. Even if only 75% of draftees are signed, NH will have 3-4 teams worth of pitchers by the end of the day.
Who are they going to play with — will other teams loan PBC infielders and outfielders to fill up a team? And does this mean everyone who pitched last year at Bradenton or State College will be released?
I think this means that NH actually intends on signing only a few of these pitchers — 10 to 20, max.

Everyone who is worried about all the pitchers needs to remeber a couple things:
All of them are not going to sign, so if you want say 12 or 15, you want to draft 20 or so.
Also, there are loads of college seniors who can be drafted in the late rounds to fill out th position player spots. Those guys have very little option but to sign.

What do you guys think our draft budget is? Around $10M like last year?
If we assume $3.5M to the top 4 guys (which is around slot IIRC), that leaves $6.5M for all the rest of the draftees. Guys like Rosenberg, Cain, and Heller will all take about $1M apiece, and we took a few more guys who’ll want only a little less than that. I do like the strategy, but I want to wait and see how many of these players we’ll end up signing.

Yea...
Sanchez would be and Zach Von Rosenberg has a decent chance to be also. Them and maybe Cain or Heller are the only ones with a shot at making the top ten/ Remember though, our top ten is much improved over the past few years so it is going to be tougher to crack it.
by joegonzo on Jun 10, 2009 8:53 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Well...
let’s see how serious the Pirates are about putting out money…
To cut to the chase…out of 31 players the Pirates have drafted the first two days…21 are looking for bonuses of MORE than 6 figures. That means $1M or more, folks. And that’s from NH himself.
Reportedly, the Pirates spent about 12 million on amateur and international signings last year. If you figure 2 or 2.5 for Sanchez….that leaves maybe 10 mil for everyone else. To me…doesn’t look like many of those high risk signings are going to occur.
by Thunder on Jun 11, 2009 12:01 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
If even half of them pan out, then the plan works. You starting getting guys who would project as top 3 round guys in the next year or two of the draft now at a discount rate. You not only save money this year, but in years to come. More money ball thinking. You can also bet that some of these 7 figure guys will think long an hard about $500,000 when it is right there in front of them to take. These guys aren’t dumb, if they say they want 1 million to sign, that’s a starting figure to negotiate with. If you really want 1 million you ask for 1.5 or 2. Plus, don’t forget, by the time August 17th gets here it is highly likley that Adam, Jack, Grabow and possibly Freddy will all be off the books. It’s possible we might spend a touch more if that is the case.
by Brakeman8 on Jun 11, 2009 12:10 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
We'll
see how many they actually sign before I start giving the FO attaboys.
by Thunder on Jun 11, 2009 12:12 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Agreed
But this is why I kept telling everyone not to get over excited about how many pitchers we were drafting. We are not going to sign all of them, let’;s just hope we are able to land a number of the best ones. I’ll be happy with a smaller number of picks being signed if it means we get higher quality guys.
by Brakeman8 on Jun 11, 2009 12:19 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
clarifying
just to clarify, Huntington stated that 21 of the draftees have asked for 6 figure bonuses, not more than 6 figure bonuses.

That...of course...
depends on which article you read…the one on MLB.com…or the ones in the Pittsburgh area papers. The one I cited was the MLB.com one. I did not have access to any audio other than the Pirates radio broadcast…and the parts I heard did not have NH on, so I can’t vouch for what was said. I didn’t misstate what was in the article I provided the link for.

Interesting
Perotto says "Pirates general manager Neal Huntington said 21 of the 31 players selected have signing bonus demands in excess of $100,000. Conversely, the Pirates drafted only three college seniors, who have no negotiating leverage and almost always sign for bonuses of $5,000 or less."
21 at 100,000 or more is a big difference from 21 at 1 million or more.

PG is reporting same as Perotto...
so shall we assume that MLB.com is wrong?? Yet, they are ALL supposedly citing NH. Wonder who??

I’d guess $100k or more. It sounds like a fairly confusing sentence that has propagated through multiple sources and that was originally supposed to mean more money than $100k, not an order of magnitude more. I’m sure some want 7 figures, but unless I hear someone specifically say “21 draftees want 7 figures” from a news source, I’ll assume it just a game of telephone.
