Pedro Alvarez
Im liking what Im seeingTwo more homeruns and 6 RBI last night for the Hillcats, a few more nights like this would really be welcomed by all of us im sure http://www.piratesreport.com/page/content.detail/id/500887/Hillcats-split-with-Myrtle-Beach.html?nav=5027
On a side note, does any one really think that Adam Laroche i worth anything on the trading block? I just think he is a complete bum and will be happy to get anything for him at the deadline.

Adam LaRoche
Amen! I’ve always thought paying anything above league minimum to a .225 hitting cornerman is a complete waste of resources. ( I know, his ave. is all the way up to .255 right now) Who does he know that he continues to get so much PT? Is it really the hope of the occasional power that keeps his butt planted on the first base bag? At least he doesn’t seem to be chasing the out of the zone, down and away breaking pitch with that lame swing as often this season. It’s been a wasted roster spot for far too long!

What is it with you gys and LaRouche?
If you want to critcize him by all means do so but you shouldn’t just make things up. He’s never hit less than .257 in the bigs – or was your comment about “a .225 hitting cornerman” simply a totally off topic observation?
Currently he is at .256/.355/.466, which is not great for a first baseman but it is pretty good for a Pirate.

Amen.
I love the way that when people can’t find actual things to complain about with him, they just make shit up out of whole cloth.
Right now, among 1B on pace to collect enough AB to qualify for the batting title, LaRoche ranks 14th in OPS, right in between Nick Johnson and Kendry Morales. He’s a perfectly adequate ML 1B, who would be starting for any number of teams tomorrow if we cut him today.

Enlighten Me
Are the Pirates getting a bargin in LaRoche? Can you provide any cost information? Any idea what Johnson and Morales are getting paid?

For all your contract detail needs.
Johnson is making 5.5M this year. That’s below-market for a hitter of his ability, because he’s extremely fragile.
Morales is pre-arb, so he only makes $600k.
LaRoche is basically an average deal for the money he’s getting.

Who do you propose that we play at 1b? Adam is the best we have right now and there is no hope of getting anything for him in a trade if we bench him and don’t see if he can get hot and increase his value.

Pedro still worries me.
The HR are nice, but he’s only batting .196 this month, and he’s got 14 K in 51 AB.
Keeping my fingers crossed, but this isn’t good.

not sure what to make of it
but, prior to his 2-for-5 night tonight, Alvarez was .237/.833 overall…which (according to minorleaguesplits) changes to .271 and .903 neutralized for park and luck – no doubt in part because of a .269 BABIP
to me, Pedro looks like a guy who is trying too hard (7.4% LD) and isnt getting any luck on his BIP that arent in the air…so perhaps he’s at least a LITTLE better than we’re giving him credit for?

Out of all our prospects, Pedro Alvarez is the one you’re worried about? Wow. I’m worried about Shelby Ford, Brian Friday, Neil Walker, Daniel Moskos—players like that. I’m worried about the guys that were drafted with high hopes and have been in the system for a few years now and have done nothing. Pedro is playing in his first year of professional baseball and has 14 HR and 55 RBI in 63 games. Is the average there? Of course not. Is he striking out too much? Yes, and he does have to show better plate discipline and cut down on those strikeouts. But the average and the cutdown on strikeouts will come with more games and experience. Now, if he was hitting .240 and and only had 2 HR and 20 RBI, yeah, then there would be a cause for concern, especially since he’s coming back from surgery to repair a broken bone in his wrist. But the power and production are definitely there, and the average will come. Pedro will be in the Major Leagues within a year and he will be an All-Star player for many years to come (barring any major injury). I think the last person you need to be worried about is Pedro Alvarez. Just my opinion.

Hmmm.....
“Shelby Ford, Brian Friday, Neil Walker, Daniel Moskos”
I’m not worried about Ford and Friday because they were both overdrafts made by the Littlefield admin. I’m getting a little worried about Walker because he just got beat to the majors by the guy drafted a year after him. And he wasn’t some overdraft, he was a first round talent when drafted. As for Moskos, is he just a lasting testament to the fact that Dave Littlefield and Ed Creech really didn’t know what they were doing?

I'm not worried about...
…Ford because he screwed up his wrist at the start of the year, explaining why his bat sucks in 2009.
…Friday because he’s playing just fine.
…Walker because I’ve mostly given up on him as a future regular already.
…Moskos because I expected him to suck right from the moment he was drafted – if anything, he’s exceeding my expectations.
Alvarez is more worrying than all of these guys because:
*The front office apparently believed that he could play 3B, and from what I can tell he’s been pretty wretched there so far this year. If he moves to 1B (as I think he will), his value takes a hit.
*He had serious issues with contact in college, and those have continued into the pros. Guys who strike out at his current rate in A+ generally are near 200K for a full season in the bigs, which severely limits their BA/OBP upside. Batter Ks increase exponentially with promotion up the ladder, which is why it’s such a big deal that he’s doing this at A+.
It’s possible that he’s hitting into some bad luck, per the BABIP number, but it’s also possible that he’s just a lower-than-average BABIP hitter. He doesn’t have enough of a track record at this point to be sure one way or the other.
Promoting Pedro to the bigs within a year would be an incredibly stupid move. He’s not ready. He’s not even close to ready.

I thought we were talking just his offense. You only mentioned offensive statistics in your original post. Yeah, his defense is suspect at 3B, and that’s why I think he will move to 1B in the near future. As far as the prospects go, you’re right about Walker and Moskos. I don’t expect a lot out of them, but I’m still worried about them a little bit because they were first round picks. The Moskos pick was a joke, but Neil Walker came to the Pirates four years ago with just as much hype as Pedro Alvarez. Friday has been playing pretty good. I just hope he can continue to play well and show management that he is ready to be in Pittsburgh in a couple of years as our everyday SS (unless management plans on getting a SS in a trade). Ford worries me the most. Yes, I understand he had an wrist injury, but still, a .165 average? It’s understandable why the power and RBI aren’t there because the power stroke has probably been zapped for the year with that injury, but that .165 average is very worrisome. Hopefully, it is just the wrist and he can bounce back the last half of this year and the next. Remember, this was the guy that was thought to be Major League ready and would come up and take over the 2B job if Freddy was traded. As far as Pedro “not even close to ready” for the big leagues, I think that’s a stupid comment. Really? So if the guy hits 35 HR and drives in 90+ runs in his first year of professional baseball, even after coming back from a broken bone in his hand, he’s not “even close” to being ready? I understand your concern about the average and the strikeouts, but the average will only get better with, as I said earlier, more experience and more at-bats. Yes, he does have to cut down on the strikeouts and get some better plate discipline, but Pedro, being a power hitter, is going to strike out a lot anyway. He doesn’t need to be striking out this much, but he’s probably going to be one of those guys that strikes out a good number of times. Alvarez was thought to be one of those guys that would be on a fast track to the big leagues, and while I don’t think it will be quite as fast as everybody thought, it will be close. He’s showing the enormous power and ability to drive in runs that made him arguably the best player in the draft last year. Pedro will be fine. I just don’t think you need to be worrying about him. This IS his first year of professional ball for cryin’ out loud.

Walker was not nearly as hyped as Pedro
Walker was regarded as somewhere in the 10-20 range of his draft, which is about where we took him.
RBI mean nothing, and while HR are nice, if you promote a guy with Alvarez’s current contact issues to the majors you get Brad Eldred’s rookie year.
Strikeout rate is a huge negative indicator for a prospect in A-ball, regardless of the prospect in question’s draft pedigree.

Alright man, let’s just agree to disagree.
by mspirate on Jun 18, 2009 3:14 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Worried?
Walker…won’t make it. Ford….Will never be a star. Friday?…let’s be real….never a starter on a contender. Moskos???…would have been cut long ago, if he wasn’t a #1.
by GeneClines on Jun 18, 2009 9:34 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Wow, I don’t know if I would be that extreme about it. I think Ford and Friday have good potential and they are relatively close as Friday is in Double-A and Ford is in Triple-A. They need to step it up though, especially Ford. Now, you have a point there with Moskos and Walker. Moskos clearly wasn’t first round talent and Walker is fading fast. Personally, I think Walker is done, and although I give him more of a shot than Walker, Moskos probably won’t ever make the big club either.

Laroche will be gone.
Adam Laroche’s days are numbered. An average 1st baseman who will bring nothing more than a few middle of the road prospects. They can plug Hinske in at 1st to finish out the year. Unless they unload him too.

You know, I really never thought I would say this, but here it goes: I’m ready for Steve Pearce to come up and finish out the year at 1B. Wow, did I just say that?
by mspirate on Jun 18, 2009 12:59 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
You know I'm not sure what Laroche is worth, but
It seems to me he’s at least worth something.
He’s an average 1B, but he’ll be available at a time when he has consistently proven he’s at his best. Sure he sucks in the spring, but after July 1 every year he seems to enjoy an out of body experience through the end of the season.
I think if I had a shot at directing what to get in return for him, I’d look no higher than AA/A+ prospects. I think he’s worth a couple low-level players, somewhere in the Top 15-30 prospect list of whichever team he goes to. They should be able to get 2-3 Low A-AA players, with a cap of one AA player/one top 15 for him. I think that would make the trade worth it.
I don’t think he’ll draw any top prospects, but if the Bucs aim low like they did this draft they may get some interesting players for him.

Depending on how much you worry about Nick Jackson's health...
…LaRoche is probably the best 1B/DH available at the deadline. Someone (probably the Giants) will give up value for that.

Indeed. It’s so great to be on the OTHER end of having idiotic GMs that sell everything for nothing for once.

i was just being playful when i said we would take him for whatever is in the guys pocket. I wrote it this morning with the thought of him grounding into a double play with the bases loaded. Once in a while its okay but the guy seems to just do that on a regular basis. I hope he starts tearing it up so that when we trade him he will garner some better prospects than if we were to trade him today

Adam LaRoche hits like Mario Mendoza during the first half and Willie Stargell after, and it’s not like this is some secret that only the Pirates and their fans know. Take a desparate team that wants to make the playoffs, and they’ll give us something at least decent for a one-year rental of one of the best second half hitters in baseball.
