Pirates Sign Second-Round Pick Brooks Pounders
The Pirates have signed Brooks Pounders, who was their second-round pick and their third pick in the draft (an earlier second-round pick, Victor Black, was a compensation pick for the Bucs not signing Tanner Scheppers last year). Pounders is a high school pitcher from the San Diego area. He was a USC recruit. He'll start off at Bradenton. I'm not yet sure how big his bonus was.
My guess--and it's only a guess--is that we'll see a few other top picks (perhaps Black and third-rounder Evan Chambers) sign fairly quickly before the bigger dominoes (Trent Stevenson, Colton Cain, and hopefully Zach Von Rosenberg) start falling.

From the link:
“Pounders, 18, was 9-2 with a 1.96 ERA for Temecula High School in California. He is 6 feet[…] 5, 235 pounds.”
Jesus Christ! That’s nearly as much as an Escalade!
(Just kidding, of course.)
I wish him nothing but the best, and God knows I could stand to lose a few myself.
Yeah, I mean, I kind of feel like we should give him a chance to sink or swim first before we’re too hard on him with all that, like with the “Quarter Pounders” and everything. There have been many successful MLB players who’ve been far bigger than Pounders.

I was mostly amused...
…by the placement of the line break.
If he pitches like Rick Reuschel or CC Sabathia, he can weigh 400 pounds for all I care.
I think a little of the rough stuff about "Quarter Pounders"
came about in the aftermath of the first day of the draft when so many of us thought DL and Ed Creech had hijacked the thing for the Bucs.
One way or the other, let’s pull for the team to get as many of the talented young pitchers signed as possible.
YES!
That’s my (not so far from) hometown boy! We will see BIG things from Mr. Pounders, i know it! I can only dream that he will fit in as nicley as Hank Blalock and Cole Hamels our products from just down the highway from Brooks!
