Pirates Sign Second-Rounder Victor Black, Court Zack Von Rosenberg

The Bucs have come to terms with their hard throwing compensation pick Victor Black. This gets the Pirates' first three draft picks signed relatively early and will get all of them playing ball his season.  Black will be assigned to State College, which is becoming a more interesting team to watch by the minute.

In other news, the Pirates have invited sixth-rounder Zack Von Rosenberg to visit the 'Burgh.  Hopefully the Bucs knew what it would take to get this kid, because signing him will be extremely important in determining whether this was a decent draft or a good draft.  It's going to take some "bucs" so let's hope the Pirates are ready to open their checkbook.

Speaking Of Trips To Pittsburgh

I heard a rumor that Rinku was in town last week. Somebody thought they saw him at a cupcake shop.. Is there anything to back that up?

With all the signings taking place

I’m really getting pumped to see where the negotiations go with the high school arms. This could turn out to be the summer this whole ship corrects its course. Sign von Rosenburg and a few others, and then bring us a Dominican present for July 4th.

That would be...

awesome! Sano would definitely put a positive spin on an otherwise typical crappy baseball season. Now, all we have to do is lose another 60 + games so we can draft Bryce Harper.. I’m kidding…no I’m not…yes I am…

No You're Not

I see what you did there… :P

Von Rosenburg

Nothing says “offer you can’t refuse” quite like Pirates-Royals.

Question...is Harper the definite number one overall prospect next year?

If so, we won’t get a stab at him no matter how bad we do. I believe it’s the AL’s turn to draft first next year.

Or do we still do that? I think it’s the most retarded policy in all of professional sports, to be honest.

by ryebr3ad on Jun 23, 2009 1:39 AM EDT reply actions

nope

That rule is no long in effect…. So its the worst record in baseball gets Harper… and as of right now, i believe we are 10 games out of that spot… With the Nats getting some good starting pitching (which has been MUCH better) and we trade away some more pieces and we very well could have Harper!

Here is to blowing every game the rest of the season!

by Schnoah on Jun 23, 2009 3:35 AM EDT reply actions

I’ve read some people speculate that maybe the Nats would pass on Harper if they had the No. 1 again because of the money they’re going to have to invest in Strasburg. So, maybe we just need to be the second worst team in the majors, and I think these guys have it in them!

by Scranton on Jun 23, 2009 8:04 AM EDT up reply actions

Isn't Harper a catcher?

Didn’t we just draft a catcher with our 1st round pick this year?

(Ha, ha. Sorry,…i had to.)

by phil79 on Jun 23, 2009 3:54 AM EDT reply actions

With Harper's bat...

…it probably doesn’t matter what position he plays.

That said, I think it’s well within Sanchez’s grasp to be a perfectly adequate backup for Harper in a year or two.

Surely, someone else read that as “Count Zack Von Rosenberg” as well, right?

Anyway, that is my nickname for him now: “The Count”. Hope he signs.

OT - But Interesting

According to links found on Yahoo Japan, Hiroshima is making some moves with its foreign roster. Righthanded reliever Scott Dohmann has been released. Dohmann had posted a 17.28 in 16 games with the Carp.

Word from the Kyodo grapevine is that the Carp are also looking to import Andy Phillips, who spent time in the White Sox system this season but is currently a free agent.

Wonder what possessed the White Sox to trade Dubee for Andy Phillips? Well, we definitely won this trade…

Von Rosenberg is the key to this draft for us.

If they can get him to sign, that’s probably enough to put it into positive territory for me. If they can’t, then…

by Vlad on Jun 23, 2009 1:30 PM EDT reply actions

Would be a great signing......

but I think the key to the draft will be if three years from now a couple of these guys are on their way to being productive major leaguers. Let’s not stamp the grade on the draft on August 1 please.

Buccos could sign Nicaraguan for $750k

http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=9107

Chesler Cuthbert, 3B. The article doesn’t say much about the guy but it does say the Pirates brass went to Nicaragua to finish the negotations. $750k is a fairly large bonus. Glad to see the PBC spending money in Latin America.

by Chad Bahamas on Jun 23, 2009 3:49 PM EDT reply actions

BP ranked him #11 in this year latin free agent crop

He sounds like a potentially good defensive 3B with raw power but a bat the needs some real refinement. Built like a “linebacker”.

by Chad Bahamas on Jun 23, 2009 4:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Chesler Cuthbert, 3B, Nicaragua
Height/Weight: 6′1″/190
Bats/Throws: R/R
Cuthbert has a chiseled frame that had one international scouting director saying that it reminded him of a linebacker’s. He also has some length and stiffness to his swing, which has some thinking he may struggle to hit at higher levels. Cuthbert has solid to average speed, and good hands and range along with an average arm, which projects him to be a solid defensive third baseman. He can generate some legitimate power in BP displays with impressive bat speed and leverage. The only real concern is his general rawness, including what one scout called, "a little scariness to the bat." A number of teams are interested, with the Royals, Braves, and Pirates mentioned most often, but the Phillies, Rangers, Mariners, Red Sox, Cubs, and Cardinals are also showing interest. The projected bonus has risen with growing interest from clubs and is projected to be in the $600-800,000 range.

Jacob Beltre also mentioned

Would be nice to sign all 3 of these guys, get our draft picks signed and inject a ton of talent in both arms (the draft) and bats (international)
