Walk one of the best commentators in baseball?

"The Whirly Bird" gets better each year

Star-divide

Bob Walk remembers when the Pirates were good. He should--he was there. Walk's terrific performance in the 1992 NLCS, a game five 3-hitter to keep the Bucs in that legendary series, was one of the great playoff games ever by a Pittsburgh pitcher.

As a commentator in the broadcast booth, he's just as terrific.

Walk's 15 years in the booth are a testimony to his abilities. HIs sly jokes and self-degradation have always provided a nice counterpoint to milquetoast Greg Brown's clueless optimism. Working for a team with the recent history of losing, Walk's humor and insight are necessary and welcome.

Beyond his style, Walk is the rare player who has a balance of knowledge and timely anecdotal references.

Having listened to plenty of commentators around the league, I believe Walk is as good as any in the game today. That he has stayed loyal to the Pirates shows his character, since with his experience he could have surely jumped ship (sorry) for ESPN by now.

Is Bob Walk not one of the best commentators in baseball, national announcers included?

I could not agree more

Brown reminds me of the guy who played Uncle Joey on Full House except more annoying. I’m always bracing myself for when he breaks out his Bullwinkle impression.

So you think 25 percent of the country is retarded!? Yea, totally. Atleast 25 percent. Well lets do a sample. There are 4 of us and you're retarded. Thats 25 percent. -South Park; Mystery of the Urinal Deuce.

I didn't care much for Bob Walk

his first couple of years in the booth. He just didn’t make much sense, even in his “WhirlyBird” kinda way. Now I think he may have been suffering from PTLCSD: Post-Traumatic League Championship Series Disorder.

But I really warmed up to him after a while and enjoy listening to him.

Bob was real generous with his time during the Pirates Caravan stop here I reported a few months ago. A real down-to-earth guy who really cares about the Pittsburgh Pirates, the fans, and the city of Pittsburgh.

I’ve never liked Greg Brown. He piss*s me off in that dorky Jeopardy host Alex Trebek kinda way. Sometimes I just want to crawl through the TV and smack him.

I think Bob will stay around for many more years with the Pirates because he loves the job and he is waiting for the team to banish the ghost of ’92 by getting to a World Series.

Don’t forget about “the magic noise”. Walk used to use the noise to give the Pirates luck in some games. I loved it because it would drive Greg Brown crazy.

Walk

Bob Walk is a good announcer. He has some personality in the booth which is nice because the worst thing is listening to a baseball game where the announcers sound half asleep. I thought Lanny Fratere was even more entertaining, but unfortunately we lost Lanny after last season.
