Pirates sign Mike Koplove

I know this isn't Earth shattering news but, the Pirates have signed Mike Koplove

Per the Tribune: The Pirates signed minor league free-agent right-hander Mike Koplove and assigned him to Triple-A Indianapolis. Lefty Corey Hamman was sent down to Double-A Altoona. Koplove, 32, went 1-3 with a 1.16 ERA in 21 relief outings this season with Lehigh Valley, Philadelphia's Triple-A affiliate. He has not pitched in the majors since 2007, when he had a 6.00 ERA in five relief outings for Cleveland.

This, I'm assuming is insurance for when Grabow is traded.

I totally called this in a comment a couple of days ago.

Koplove is a good pickup. We chased him bit over the offseason, but he went with Philly because it’s his hometown, and he opted out of his deal at the start of June after they didn’t call him up. Like most sidearmers, he’s hard to drive, but sometimes has a few control issues (not Hansen bad, just like 3.5 BB/9 instead of the 2.5-3 you’d like to see. Machine projections at the start of the year had him with an ERA in the low 4s, and his excellent work at AAA this year certainly won’t hurt that.

Nice low-cost snag. Could see him later in the year, if we need an arm.

i remember

you did call it.

i’m surprised it’s a minor league deal though since he just opted out of his philly deal because he wanted to be called up. that said if there’s a team likely to call up a reliever soon it’s us…

They didn't release him.

He had a clause in his contract stating that he could opt out if he wasn’t called up to the majors by the start of June. He wasn’t, so he did.

NICE!

I love when I can add another stolen reliever to the post-grabow (and probably capps) bullpen.

Meek-Chavez-Jackson-Burnett-Koplove- Hansen/veal

Anyone think Snell or Karstens could go to the pen when Morton comes up since they want Gorzo starting?

In other news the Pirates also demoted Corey Feldmannman
