ESPN and the Pirates
I suggest everyone quickly take a look at the front page of espn.com right now. The FOURTH story from the top on the front page says "Pirates players question timing of recent trades" - right here. Once again ESPN wants the rest of the country to think the Pirates have no idea what they are doing. I cannot wait to see Neal turn this ship around by continuing to make trades for high upside players, yet at the same time continue to have the media question his moves. For most of us we can see a faint light at the end of the tunnel and think its coming soon. To the rest of the world, they will continue to think the Pirates will always be bad and will be shocked when they are hopefully contenders down the road.

Its Mike and Mike in the Morning. M&M sides with the Yinzers. Keith Law explains to them that what the Pirates did yesterday was a good move.

We would have shocked the baseball world this year
if we hadnt gone 11-22 in the division this year. If we were just .500 in our division, we would be 1 game out of first and the wild card. Then I could see the players bitching being legitimate.

When you can’t beat the teams that you see multiple times every year, you can’t compete.

What's even worse
is the comments below the story. Such as we could of had Bay nady Mclouth with Nyjer as defensive replacement and laroche freddy and wilson in the field. Or I’m no longer a Pirates fan. Funny, sad, and stupid are good words to describe the comments

It doesn’t help when the local media takes idiotic stances, too. Look at this terrible article that Gene Collier wrote.
I would highlight specific parts that are especially idiotic, but then I’d just be pasting the entire article.

wow gene collier is an ass clown… seriously all these so called “pirates fans” they will be back in a year or 2 when the buccos will be competitive and actually have a shot at winning the division… not like this team of jack freddy and adam

Wait until the PG editorial board calls the trades salary dumps…

Nady and Bay
Yes, we could have had them for three more months. Again, we’d have missed the playoffs because the rotation would have been a disaster. Then we’d have lost them both to free agency because we wouldn’t have offered salary arbitration.
Sorry, that doesn’t seem like it would have been a good strategy, Green_Wave.
If the Red Sox can’t re-sign Bay, do you seriously think the Piartes could have?

I'm not saying that
I was reiterating the comments on the ESPN page that was linked too.

Does anybody really give a rat’s about anything said on ESPN?
Free your ass and your mind will follow.

I personally like hearing Berman say back...back..back..back...gone after every home run in the derby!

Amen Brother...Amen!
Thanks for pointing out the truth. If it doesn’t deal with the Yankees or Red Sox…..or anything outside the New York/Boston markets for that matter……ESPN thinks everything else is small potatoes. To hell with that entire network and the blinders they constantly wear.
I’m just thankful that I live in Reno, Nevada……and in a not too distant Spring, I know that I can walk into any casino sportsbook, place my futures bet on the huge underdog Pirates, and then laugh at ESPN & all the so-called experts on my way to the bank. What a sweet day that will be. And that day is coming friends….much sooner than you think. I believe! Go Bucs!

PTI just did a segment on the Pirates. Bob Ryan asked Wilbon if the Pirates vets have a legitimate gripe, and Wilbon said they did. His reasoning? “Players have to know that management has their back and is trying to win.” (Paraphrased). I guess management has a duty to always win in the present, and damn the future.
Wilbon then said the Pirates have “always” had great, young talent, but management has “always” given it away for free, unlike the Marlins who stockpile young talent. I guess it didn’t occur to them we’re trying to be like the Marlins in that regard.
No discussion about whether Morgan is a “great, young talent.” The way they were talking, you’d think we just threw away Aramis Ramirez again. No mention of how Littlefield or Bonifay aren’t running the team anymore.

Its because they have no idea
When the vast majority of people at ESPN talk about the Pirates, its negative and they dont know what they are talking about.
I saw that piece on PTI too and just laughed at how clueless they were. The only topics they can talk about on PTI with some knowledge are big market NFL, NBA, and MLB teams or good teams (sometimes) and golf.

What bothers me is Neyer
He is someone I really respect and read religiously, and he seems to rag the Pirates, that is when he even bothers writing about them. For example, he criticized the Pirates for the McLouth extension, stating Nate was awful with the glove and was basically 2 good months from being an average hitter. HOWEVER, when we traded Nate, he said it was a bad move because he was signed to a reasonable contract. I posed a question in the next chat about his faulty logic and was ignored.

Rob Neyer Does Not Make Mistakes
Therefore, what you read was not a mistake.

Here's an idea...
Maybe ESPN criticizes the Pirates because they’ve HAD 16 STRAIGHT LOSING SEASONS. MAYBE HAVING A FRONT OFFICE AS BAD AS THE PIRATES HAVE, IS BAD FOR BASEBALL. Maybe ESPN criticizes the Pirates because they write their articles based on facts, not based on the warm fuzzy feeling we get when Neal pulls the wool over our eyes.
Maybe ESPN criticizes the Pirates, because we’re actually so bad…that were bad for baseball

So why does ESPN virtually ignore the Steelers and Penguins?
Didn’t they already hand the 2009/2010 SB trophy over to the Patriots? ESPN is a JOKE!! Pittsburgh isn’t sexy enough for them I guess. Big Ben virtually wills his team to victory and they list him below Drew Brees (who has won exactly what?), behind the almighty “savior” Tom Brady and Peyton Manning. Its all a joke folks, you just have to come to the conclusion that you aren’t going to get positive information about the Pirates, Steelers, nor the Pens on ESPN. Simple as that.

ESPN has a grudge
against the NHL. The Pens, nor any other NHL team will get love there because they don’t have rights to broadcast the NHL, so why promote the league(in their eyes)? Sportscenter was good when it was young and new, now it is very corprate.
On a side note, why is it that so many fans care/complain about what announcers or sportscenter hosts say about players/teams? They’re not player evaluators, they’re just comm majors reading off what somebody else is telling them to say, probably from some article that we all have access to.

Probably because...
ESPN has like 37 channels and they don’t have much competition. If you live out of state like me, thats the only place I can get news about Pittsburgh teams. I would like to see another network offer a quality competition to ESPN, someone who would provide unbiased reporting, maybe? What a concept.

Great comment Piratefan13
You would still think the Steelers have a smashmouth running game if you listen to them talk.

That'll be the day
Personally, I think ESPN is going to be a little surprised when we are finally good enough to appear “Sunday Night Baseball”. If the Brewers can do it now, I think we can in another two or three years.
