Regarding Miguel Sano
Does anybody know how long the Pirates have been courting this kid?
I'm obviously suspicious of the idea that Littlefield could identify a talent that is likened to Pujols and Ramirez, much less pursue him. So if my suspicions are correct, does anyone really think that a year and a half relationship could be the deciding factor in where he signs?
I hope that I'm wrong in this regard, but as the days go by I'm becoming more and more concerned....

The relationship
is with Rene Gayo, the Pirates Latin American scouting director, who is supposedly well respected throughout baseball. He turned 2 million dollars into a bunch of major leaguers including Johnny Peralta and Fausto Carmona.
Thats what I was thinking but
It seems like from what I have read it was worded as “a relationship with the Pirates”.
That’s generally what it’s reported as, but more detailed reports say the relationship is with the Latin American scouting staff, not the organizational higher ups. Thankfully Littlefield was never involved.

All the trades are nice and are good for the future, but if this new management is really serious about producing a winner, it HAS to sign Sano. All we’ve been hearing about is how the the Pirates’ Latin American directors have developed a great relationship with him and how the Pirates have been the favorites to sign him for a while now. NH and the front office need to show us, once and for all, that they are serious about winning and that it’s not about money and fork up the money to sign this kid. If he’s truly as good as everybody says he is and is one of those can’t-miss Dominican talents (ala Miguel Cabrera and Hanley Ramirez), sign him. Do whatever it takes. But if we walk away from this and Sano signs with another team, all of that effort to build relationships and to be the team to beat for him is all for not, and it’s another black eye for this much-maligned franchise.
If they don’t sign him, are you giving up on the Pirates?
Pretty please?

I don't think it will absolutely kill the franchise if they don't get Sano.
I’d also like them to be competitive in signing him, but I’d also find it OK if they don’t get him and allocate those dollars to many other quality Latin American players.
