Pittsburgh Tea Party for Real Fans
For intelligent Pirate fans only. We know that Bob Nutting has spent money since McClatchey stepped down. And that Neal Huntington has, quite frankly, done a hell of a job with what he was given. Most of the trades since the new guard took over have been good, and the Pirates are actually trying to win. So in direct contradiction to the other post, I suggest a display of support for the organization.
1. Support the team - go to games.
2. Symbolic acts - create a petition or craft a letter showing our support to Huntington and Nutting.
3. Well an ad campaign would just be waste, Nutting isn't letting the team go, even if the yinzers think Mark Tiexera will singlehandedly win us the World Series.
4. I can't respond to this one, the other guy says to hire a new GM to try to make the team good, but they already did.
5. Do nothing, just ignore the idiots.
There's no need to take the team back from anything. They're doing well, building a minor league system so they could compete for years. I, for one, would much prefer constant contending for the playoffs and/or World Series rather than one .500 season and more awfulness.
This post is only to contradict the other one. I've stopped trying to change the minds of those people, but I know there are plenty of fans, particularly on these boards, that know the Pirates are doing well and have the patience to wait rather than trying to buy free agents in a haphazard attempt at one not awful season (Kinda like we did when PNC park opened).
So please, intelligent, maybe not articulate, but certainly real baseball fans, join my in my support of the current Pirates organization, and help us undo the evil that was Dave Littlefield.

Just don’t get why, if you stayed on board through the Littlefield era, you would quit the team when they are finally doing an honest rebuilding.

all my family and friends hate the trades/management
I thought I was the only one to see the light at the end
It’s so nice to not have DL anymore at the helm

Haha
I’m with you steelcity22. I’ve spent the last year and a half defending the trades to my peers, to no avail.

Rebuilding?
I don’t know how you can call trading our everyday left fielder and best relief pitcher for two huge question marks coming out of the only organization who may be in worse shape than our Buccos. Besides, it’s just the front office pulling the wool over our eyes with words. When Neal Huntington says “rebuilding”, he’s talking about rebuilding the Nutting bankroll, and fattening his own paycheck. I mean, did anyone see the lineup we used last night, June 30th? I mean, come on. Garrett Jones batted 3rd.
GARRETT JONES BATTED 3RD. IN A MAJOR LEAGUE GAME!

So
you are angry because we traded a defensive replacement on most teams and a reliever who is having his first good season and it’s only average anyway for most teams…I think you have some talent evaluation problems sir. garrett Jones batting third is precisely the reason why we needed to trade some people so we could get more talent in the minors in his place.

Baseball in Pittsburgh is going to be great
PNC Park will sparkle on the main stage called the playoffs, fans will flock to the park and it will be tough to get tickets. This club will embark on a lengthy period of production and excitement that will restore glory to the historic franchise. Boycotting and complaining now is like leaving the “Outback” after the dinner salad know that a juicy steak is coming… mmm and maybe some apple pie. I don’t waste my time defending the trades anymore because all I need to do is point to the plethera of talent that is populating the minor league system. I will continue to wait patiently with my “foam #1 finger,” and retro batting helmet for the glory days to return. GO BUCS!!

Symbolic acts
I’m all for this. 100% I don’t live in Pittsburgh so displaying my support for the vison of Huntington is somewhat difficult. Does anyone know how to contact the front office? I would really love to write Neal (and the players for that matter) a letter of support. ANy suggestions?

Minor League's rebuilding first
You do know most of the minor league teams associated with the Pirates have a losing record don’t you? 1/2 of them are in last place in their division. Their AAA team is below
.500 and 2nd to the Reds AAA team. If not for the Pirates, the Reds might be the worst run team and we are 2nd to them.

That's why you draft talent
and acquire talent for the minors.
As they move up, numbers will improve, and potentially the records with it (though win-loss isn’t as important down there as seeing the guys develop).
If there is no talent in the minors though, yes. They will suck.

All the Trades
I was a bit PO’d with the trades last year and this year, but after reviewing them they aren’t too bad. First the Pirates are at about the same Won-Loss record as this time last year – a PLUS. With McClouth gone the team didn’t get any worse – another PLUS. I can accept Nyjer Morgan for Lastings Milledge on the basis of getting younger, but Milledge is bringing some baggage and could disrupt the clubhouse. Let’s hope not. I don’t mind Hinske going to the Yankees, but why did a not so rich club have to give $400K to THE richest club? Overall what bugs me though is that it APPEARS to be more of the same as the last regime. I try not to think that, but the Pirates just can’t seem to get an identity cause the players keep moving, especially what appear to be fan favorites. There is no reason that the trade with the Nats can’t work out. Look at what the Pirates got six years ago when Giles went to the lowly padres for a guy named Bay! Here’s hoping it all works out, but for now, it all appears to be done to save/make money.

Save money?
Isn’t Milledge/Hanrahan a more expensive duo than NyjMo/Burnett? (Or am I wrong about that?)
And if you’re paying money to make a team take Hinske (which might make sense given his numbers as a Pirate), you’re not really saving money there either.

They would have
paid MORE money to keep Hinske than it will take to keep Garrett Jones around for three months. Do the math: If a guy (especially an utterly useless guy) is due let’s say $800,000 and you pay someone $400,000 (which they were going to have to pay Hinske anyway) to take him and the rest of his contract off your hands, then you replace him with someone every bit as good (or mediocre, or lousy) who will make $200,000 the rest of the year, haven’t you saved $200,000? I don’t understand what’s so hard about this.

So you're saying
it was done to save money and not to help the team/minor leagues/whatever?

I’m pretty sure that this actually costs them more. Hinske signed for 800k. He played half a season with the Pirates (400k). And the Pirates paid the Yankees 400k to take him off their hands. So they pay all of Hinske’s contract, pay Garrett Jones, and get 2 chumps to throw in the minors. I think the trade was made to clear up a roster spot and get rid of another one of their useless outfielders.
But even if I’m wrong here, I doubt Nutting was sitting in his office one day and thinking “How can I save a couple hundred thousand dollars?” Then he calls in NH and says “Get rid of Hinske. I know he’s a great player and all, but we need to dump some salary.” NH replies “We tried that 2 weeks ago, nobody wanted an awful pinch-hitting, utility man who should be in AAA.” Nutting sighs and says, “Fine, we’ll pay a little bit of what’s left on his contract. Now hurry up! I need 200 grand!”
