i m mostly in favor of a platoon where players are not really distinguishing themselves, but after the 2 bombs in the 9th, I really hoped Moss would get a chance to fail- just in case, he is getting hot. Maybe having GJ slug HRs and threatening a starting job might have a positive effect on Moss.
It’s not like Delwyn is killing lefties this year or all-time, either. It’s just another stupid lineup decision by JR.

…brought to you by the same people who gave Pearce only 12 at-bats in two weeks.
by Gorkys n' Beans on Jul 11, 2009 6:40 PM EDT up reply actions
well, moss has looked really really bad on some first pitch swings, but mostly he swings at balls too low in the zone and misses, and a lot of those are low fastballs, not breaking balls or changeups, so I dont want to crucify JR for platooning him. Moss did only have those 2 bombs in the 9th. Still, if there’s a chance he might get hot, that would be worth taking I guess!
In JRs defense
Pearce freaking sucks.

If I m not wrong, he hit 1 for the pirates all season!
Hinske and his replacement Jones are now tied with 3 HR after the trade.

Line up
I like the line up except I would have Andy hit 6th and Adam hit 7th. As for Moss, I would let him sit. Last time we tried to force him into a regular role, he started slumping vs RHP as well.
Holy $@#!

young didn't start with the bucs
Moss had many chances last year, and many more this year to stake a claim on RF. He’s been unsuccessful, at establishing his bat. JR is just looking to get more. DY has been a decent hitter, so let him have at it. In the long run it may help Moss, DY and the pirates.
by Pensburgh Pirates on Jul 11, 2009 7:23 PM EDT up reply actions
Moss played
less than half a season last year. 45 games. That’s “many chances?”
Let’s just disagree, okay?
That way, we can both get back to slagging Mario.

agreed
I guess I’d just like to see Moss live up to the hype, that’s all. He’s been a solid player this year, but maybe next year, or even the back end of this season he’ll be better. Until then though I don’t think it’s fair to bash JR if he’s trying to optimize his peices. I mean the Bucs need to look at all their players, hard, and figure out who’s a good fit where – in the future.
by Pensburgh Pirates on Jul 11, 2009 8:02 PM EDT up reply actions
Why in **** is JR hitting him 3rd.
I hate JR.
Statistically
the 3rd spot is the spot that has more at bats with no one on. JR must know that right?
Which is why...
LaRussa bats his pitchers 8th. Having the 9th batter a position player means a better chance of having more runners on (after the 1st inning) when Phat Albert comes up.
A little patronizing, don't you think?
Jones is a statistical outlier, but that doesn’t mean no one wants him to succeed. Granted, I’m just playing devil’s advocate.
DY
bringing out the wood
"Everybody panic! If you have a small child, use it as a shield! They love tender meat."
That’s funny. DY hits a bomb and the wind must be blowing out. Moss hits a bomb and he justifies himself as the starting RF.

I don't get how Adam can be put in front of Andy
"Everybody panic! If you have a small child, use it as a shield! They love tender meat."
Neal wants to trade him
I could definitely deal with Moss in LF, DY in RF, and Jones at 1st
"Everybody panic! If you have a small child, use it as a shield! They love tender meat."
Do you really think
LaRoche is better than Monix?
"Everybody panic! If you have a small child, use it as a shield! They love tender meat."
I can tell that but.........
his trade value get’s less and less the more he plays, just like his batting average.
Very, very pretty pitch for the K
"Everybody panic! If you have a small child, use it as a shield! They love tender meat."
means he's....
told old for some fans on this site who think he shouldn’t be getting at bats because his minor league stats don’t project enough.
Nate was more costly and brought us a guy who may turn out to be our best starter plus two other quality prospects.
not be fooled by facts.....
McLouth didn’t “project” either, but was a little younger when he got his opportunitiy. Jones had less than 80 career ML at bats as of July 1 this year.
You're joking, right?
McLouth posted a career minor league OPS of almost .800 (which is just about what his major league career OPS is) despite being young for his level every single season. He displayed great doubles power (which is a very significant indicator for future home run power) and very good patience. Nate projected as exactly what he is, an average major league bat. Our front office was just full of morons at the time.
800 OPS isn't exactly....
a great projection for a corner OF. And I think his power came as a bit of a surprise. Not saying he shouldn’t have been playing, just saying his numbers weren’t amazing. No one in our organization or any other thought he would be as good as he was last year.
Nate wasn't just a corner OF
He appears to have roughly split time between LF and CF. An 800 OPS is pretty good from the CF position (although of course offset a good bit by Nate’s lack of defensive ability there).
The power isn’t a surprise when, like I said, you look at his doubles. Minor league doubles hitters who show some HR pop, such as Nate, tend to turn those doubles into homers as they age.
Nate OPS+ed 126 in his age-26 season, likely his peak year. That’s good, especially from the CF position, but it’s not super awesome, either. It really wasn’t that hard to see Nate doing what he did. Which makes it all the more damning that Littlebrain didn’t.
For what little it adds.....
he is under our control for the next six years. The next three at about $500K/per.
He may be oldish
but he’s not bad enough to not be starting regularly on this team. I don’t currently see a player that deserves playing time over him.

Ok...
assume for a minute that the way Jones is producing is for real. What does it say about our organization’s talent evaluation that he spent the last 3 months at Indianapolis??
We signed him as a minor league
free agent in the offseason, and to be fair, his numbers career-wise weren’t off the charts. He had a good three months and we brought him up. Nothing wrong with the process.
do the pirates always
have to have a starting pitcher throw at least 20 in the 1st inning …cheese n rice!!!!
That doesn't bother me so much
2 outs…just focus on the batter. Ohlie a job well done
"Everybody panic! If you have a small child, use it as a shield! They love tender meat."
Ohlendorf needs to keep throwing that inside fastball to lefties that tails back over the inside corner of the plate. He’s spotting it perfectly and the ump’s giving him that strike.

tried for the longest time only ten years ago and before that. Then they realized that it’s easier to just keep your best prospects and make them stars instead of trading them for stars
Also.....

Ohlie really possesses some nasty stuff
"Everybody panic! If you have a small child, use it as a shield! They love tender meat."
As a fourth starter
With Morton, Lincoln and someone else ahead of him two years from now, there is real potential. Of course that is assuming EVERYTHING goes perfectly and the other two guys exceed all expectations. But, in terms of stuff, those guys have the dreaded potential.
I like where those 3 could take us. I’d like to see Owens get promoted too. Lets see if he can get to AAA in 2 years and then move up to the big club
"Everybody panic! If you have a small child, use it as a shield! They love tender meat."
Unfortunately...
the powers that be don’t seem to be interested in moving him up to Lynchburg.
Really confusing
I didn’t think PA deserved a promotion. If he did then surely Calvin Anderson could move up as well. They waited to promote Lincoln and now Owens. Maybe its to test their makeup when hearing they may be promoted
"Everybody panic! If you have a small child, use it as a shield! They love tender meat."
It's been written....
a bit, that they are slow to promote pitchers who haven’t developed a changeup because it’s much harder to work on that with confidence and develop it at the higher levels. Conceptually that seems like a very solid, logical plan. I also saw a blog entry looking at some to this and it appears that vs. last year there are some signs it has worked.
The main point being, their is a reason and some logic behind the reasoning.
I understand that
But if that is the case then once you see he is actually turning into a prospect, then why not push him into using the change up then? He is mowing down everyone he faces.
"Everybody panic! If you have a small child, use it as a shield! They love tender meat."
He has
been working on his off speed. he hasn’t been allowed to use his two seamer for the past few starts
I saw that
and he’s still dominating…I think that may be a sign that he needs to advance
"Everybody panic! If you have a small child, use it as a shield! They love tender meat."
And from what I've read...
he’s only allowed to throw one of his 2 fast balls. The one that DOESN’T sink.
That's the point.....
the are (supposedly) working on that now and working on his command. I don’t hae a view on this, just telling you what DK was writing. Maybe they just want him to throw it more. I don’t think a few starts one place or the other is going to make too big a difference. If it goes for another month like this, yes, it would seem to be unusual.
Realize he doesn’t sit mid-90s so I’m sure they want him to work on a lot of stuff so that he doesn’t just move up and get crushed by better players with better plate discipline, etc.
You’re right. Ohlie has the “dreaded” potential. I don’t have many complaints about him, but one thing I don’t like about him is that he falls behind way too many hitters. He seems to get to 2-0, 2-1, 3-1 on every hitter. He has gotten better as the game has progressed tonight, but I’d like to see him throw that first-pitch strike on a more consistent basis.
Adam LaRoche checklist:
1. Strikeout? Check.
2. Popout to LF? Check.
3. Groundout to 1B? Check.
4. Groundout to 2B?
5. GIDP?
He’s getting closer to hitting for the “Adam LaRoche” cycle!

One for every five games
pro-rated to 160 games would be 32 in a season. about average for someone with his speed i would think, but he is a rookie.
If he really has the speed he supposed to have
he could easily get 50 SB. I think since he’s only been up here for ~30 games he’s still a little hesitant. Next year he should get many more.

for an interesting read look at my mlb math. the odds the pirates not having a winning season in 17years is 1 in 129,792 its not bad luck its not bad players its not bad management its the league. Go to college games, go t o little league games just do not take mlb seriously

not of winning it all
not of making the playoffs
just going over 500
you can blame the organization
but I really think you need to think about how unrealistic it is to win it all with the current pay structure, organization of the league

put down the bong
whatever keep blaming the players, the coaches, the management, the owner same old story on the message board. Bad things happen for a reason and I just don’t think it is as simple as cheap owners bad gm’s , players luck etc. In 17 years a team should at least go over 500 once or something is wrong with the league. Plain and simple. Too nice a ballpark, a city to have to put up with this
by changepirateskarma on Jul 11, 2009 10:26 PM EDT up reply actions
No, our losing has absolutely nothing to do with bad ownership, bad GMs, managers, players etc. Nope, not at all. We have had the best of all those things the last 16 years and just somehow could not win 82 games. Go figure.
Whatever
go figure
Of course bad ownership, gm’s, managers have had an effect. However even with all of that we should have been over 500 at least once. I’m not talking about making the playoffs or winning it all. The pirates are exposing the league for what it is.

That was f***ing ridiculous.
No kidding
Stairs hit an absolute rocket, Rollins walks when Capps couldn’t find the plate to save his life, Victorino with a rocket to CF. At the latest Capps needed pulled after the out he actually got. But gee, he’s The Closer, can’t pull him!!!!
Well, am I glad MLB.com went out
…the Pirates TV truck crew must have gone on a frenzy and smashed all the equipment. That’s certainly what I feel like doing. And to top it all off, LaSwoosh, the Mad Capper, and Freddy the Rake have all hurt their trade value tonight.
This is the death spiral folks. Time to pick an over/under for wins and I wouldn’t count on going over 50-something.
Capps had no value before this game
He’s pretty much in the “would have to pay somebody to take him” territory right now. He has completely lost It.

Phillies had
about a 3% chance of winning? I was figuring 2%, so thanks for that, I feel so much better now.
hahahah CAPPS!
man if they trade capps i wont watch another game!!!!hahahhahahahahahhaha NOT!!!!!! what a bum… HE HAS ABSOLUTELY NO TRADE VALUE NOW! i also blame John Russell for this one too just because hes your closer doesnt mean you have to leave him in the game to get his brains beat in…. you could tell he didnt have it after the 2nd batter just groovin shit down the middle… haha greg brown was like the pirates needed to add on hahaha yea 7 to 3 in the 9th wasnt enough huh greg??? what a joke
That is the deal.....
No one ever wants to pull their closer no matter what the situation. Not saying the should or shouldn’t have here, but that is the conventional wisdom and NO ONE does it differently. So for Russell it is covering his ass by NOT pulling Capps. If he does and someone else blows it he gets murdered by press, fans, etc….
Bingo
That’s all “The Book” is for managers. A way to cover their asses. “Well, gee, I did what the book said to do. Must be the players’ faults, not mine!”
Can we trade JR
for Manny Sanguillen and a plate of Manny’s barbecue? How about just the plate of barbecue?
exactly…. JOHN RUSSELL: uhhh the book says put your closer in and leave him in the 9th so thats what i did tonight uhh i thought uh capps threw pretty well he just uh left some balls over the middle of the plate uhh were going to come back tomorrow and play hard uhh i might move my neck tonight i dont know yet. uhhhhhhhh i really dont know what im doing uhhhh.

20 More Years
We are what in 3rd year of the 3rd 5 year plan?
It will be another 5 years before the AA talent is proven to be bums, then the Pirates can trade then for more bums.. See a cycle people.
It may not be the one he has in plans, but...
Looks at the guys at AA and looks at their stats, there is nobody in the organization that is going to be a difference maker.
Like Cook said, how good of a talent evaluator is Huntingdon?
Dave Littlefield
had minor leaguers that had great stats. See how far that got us. There is more to minor leaguers than stats because most of the time they are working specific things from throwing a specific pitch to working on going the other way more and retooling their swing. I don’t put much stock in stats until the player is at AAA
Yeah...
Stats mean nothing,,, I hop Alvarez is more working on his throwing from 3rd then his batting cause he has looked bad and I have gone to a handful of Curve games, same with Tabata, in fact I went to a game against Bowie in late june and he was getting booed.
It sucks that some Pirate fans can’t still come to the conclusion thst this will never get turned around cause the ownership doesn’t wanna spend money.
The team seriosuly will never have a winner..
spend money on who??? who should we spend money on???
tell me how big a difference would jason bay and his 250 avg make on this team he and NADY AND MCLOUTH couldnt help this team win what makes you think them staying would turn anything around… you need to get over this MCCLATCHY/DAVE LITTLEFIELD era its over…NEAL HUNTINGTON KNOWS WHAT HES DOING hes already made the minor league system 100x more talented in 2 year here then its been in the last 10yrs.
Bay .250 average?
LOL!!!
Like I said, the Huntinton apologist are going to get a huge shock when this enters the 4th- 5 year plane ina few years..
lol sorry 260 avg
and will see about that… hey man if you think littlefield did a better job then neal in 2 years your fucking crazy!
Where did I say
Littefield was better, I am saying Huntington is already had this team on the up you are going to get a real surprise… There is nobody in the Minors.. I will hold out hope for Alvarez, but thats it..
Miledge and Tabata will be trouble here.
Bay was horrible here huh? Glad he has moved on and is winning and putting up huge numbers. This crappy team didn’t deserve him.
Littelfield was bad...
But Huntington may be just as bad, lets not forget who Neil learned under…
Like I said, I can’t wait until 2014 and guys like Tabata, Alvarez, Lincolin, Hernandez, Locke can’t get out of AAA and fans here are crying about Neil..
Until this front office pays, nothing will ever change.
If Pirates were serious, Capps would have been lifted about the walk to Utley tonight.
Yep. What is JR doing? He’s a terrible manager. So Capps gives up a 3-run shot to tie the game up, but by all means JR, keep him in the game! Just terrible. I can’t wait to hear Capps’ excuse. How long until he goes on the DL with “shoulder tightness” or “elbow pain”.
Exactly...
Didn’t Monroe get released for not running out a grounder? If that was the case, how can Russell still have a job after this?
i agree JR is pathetic
the guy dont even move his neck!!!! he looks like a fucking statue in the dugout!
maby if JR was serious
haha and i dont think your going to have to wait until 2014 to see these players in the bigs… and who did neal learn under??? he came from Cleveland were they actually won some shit.
I went out to eat and just got back. You’ve got to be kidding me? We had a four-run lead in the ninth and Capps gave up five runs to lose it?? Please tell me you’re joking!!
unfortunately not ms. it kinda went ilke this. home run. then a few hits and somewhere in there cutch made a great play. then the bases got loaded and capps gave up the winning run
Steelers - Immaculate Reception. Penguins - Immaculate Rejection. Pirates......Immaculate Resurrection???
John Russell
Should not get any blame in this either..
Let's throw it out there....
Matt Capps is not a closer (as evidenced by tonight’s awful performance). The only reason he was good two seasons ago was because he was just coming into the league and teams were unfamiliar with him. The teams didn’t know what he had. All Capps does is throw his flat 92-94 mph fastball over the middle every pitch. And I mean every pitch. GET A SECOND PITCH, CAPPS! If all you have is a fastball, it better be 98-100 mph. Capps also had control two seasons ago, never walking anybody and being able to spot his fastball wherever he wanted to. Now, he makes it a necessity to walk at least one batter because he doesn’t know where his fastball is going. Now that he’s been in the league two (going on three) seasons, teams just sit on the fastball now. They don’t have to look for any other pitch and they don’t have respect his “slider” because he can’t come close to throwing it for a strike. You throw on top of all that the fact that we have an incompetent manager who doesn’t know when to pull a guy getting shelled and it adds insult to injury. The worst thing out of all this? We thought we had a young, reliable closer and now we’re stuck with nobody that is fit to handle the ninth inning. I guess I should wait and see if JR (not likely) has the balls to pull Capps out of his role and let other guys get their shot and see if they can get the job done before saying we have nobody, but I don’t see anybody in our bullpen being able to be a closer. It’s time to put an end to the Matts Capps experiment. A guy that has one pitch, a flat 92 mph fastball, is not a closer. What used to be sure wins when we were up by 3+ runs in the ninth inning will now become nailbiters and adventures, to say the least, until we get a real closer.
HI boys and girls
I am thinking of trading everyone on the team except Andy LaRoach, and bringing the entire Indy team up paying them the league minimum. Does anyone care? Well I wont listen to you if you do!
